I'm trying to make Monday evening my sewing night, since there's nothing on tv to knit by. Yesterday I was working on the huge stack of curtains I have to hem before we can hang them, but you know I had to start Smooch. I made it through the pretty little edging. Again thanks to Johanna for working that part of the directions out. Looking ahead at the pattern, I have a feeling that we'll be running across a couple more confusing parts. If we do I'll make a little page with tips/solutions that those of you starting later can refer to. And remember, this is NOT a race. The official date for Smooch is "whenever" and I mean it. No feeling pressured to start right away or finish fast. Just let me know when you start so I can send everyone your way for progress details.
Becky wannabe's: are you swatching? I am positively dreading giving up my 5mm needles to work on Becky's stripey sweater. I'm substituting Rowan cotton glace (from my stash - I'm being so good) for the Falaise. And you know what kind of needle that means - 3.5mm. If I'm lucky! I have been completely spoiled by the all seasons cotton. Pretty much everything else I have planned until deepest darkest winter is in a considerably smaller gauge. Perhaps I'll have to cast on for something big like this, so I can still have something on the needles to go back to for a little reprieve. They say it's good for your hands if you have different projects going at different gauges. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

If you look for something on tv to knit by, try a socks game...
:-)
Oh, it's not only good for your hands, it is mandatory! Keeps them young and supple. :) I'm not racing through Smooch but it's so irresistible I can't help but pick it up. Yes, there are some sketchy instructions ahead. I'll deal with it when I get there. I'm not going for the plunging neckline either. Won't hold the Charmin at such daring depths. :)
You Tank Girls are making me tired. That's just Jealousy talking...the finished products are looking fab.
I haven't run into any other major problems in the Smooch pattern. The armholes are almost done on my back and I LOVE THEM!! The finished arm holes are beautiful and so much fun. In the pattern it says to work straight after the decreases are done, what they really mean is to work straight while still picking up the loop at the end of each row for the finished look. That seems pretty evident though.
I'm almost done with the back and I'm wondering if Smooch is a candidate for a three needle bind off. I've never done it before, but I'm not thrilled with the way that the shoulder seams look on my sweater and want Smooch to be as beautiful as it can be. Any thoughts?
Great idea, Uli! I forget that baseball has started. I'll have to make sure we've got the Sox channel programmed into our remote so I can find it. But when am I going to sew now?!
Thanks for the encouragement Kerstin. And Johanna, I'm glad to hear that the directions look worse than they really are. I think you should definitely try a three needle bind off. Maybe I'll try it too. I've never used it for shaped shoulders before. Check out this info page for some tips. Give it a try and let me know what you think, ok?
Are you using one of the blended colorways, Alison? I haven't seen any of those in person in the pair of LYS I've shopped. And you aren't knitting it circular, just on a circ needle, from what I see. Is anyone converting this one to circs?
*i will not swatch, i will not swatch, i will not swatch*
My mantra until I get Pagan finished! I am envious of all of you starting smooch! BUT, I mush get other projects finished first or else ...
Anyways...I love the purple tank!!
my swatch is done but i can't start the real knittin until i seam up the purple panda this week. i'm trying to recall from when becky made it, i think it has ribbing at the bottom, no? maybe i'll try out some fancy tubular cast-on? or then again, maybe not!
p.s. i'm at work with no pattern in front of me, that's why i'm trying to remember instead of just looking it up! :)
Maggi, I'm using asc in a sort of steel blue. There's a picture of it in my post from Saturday. Morgan & Carolyn, you're being very good to wait until other projects are done!
So Carolyn, do you really want to try the tubular cast on? Are we going to make this a REAL Becky sweater and do it right? Or should we stay wannabe's and just do it our way?
I'm going tubular cast on for the Becky wannabee sweater--it's worth the frustration in the beginning. It's very cool
I don't know about MOnday tv, but I just heard the Amazing Race is going to be on Thursdays--woo hoo! (though it's hard to knit by since I wanna watch it)
Johanna! Wait for me! I wanna do three needle bind off, too. I didn't do it on Pagan and I'm still suffering through night sweats because of it. Or maybe you should go ahead and do it and teach me. :) It looks pretty easy. My problem with Pagan was not knowing exactly what stitches to put on a holder and work later. I've seen the real-life results of the three needle bind off and it is the way to go. No doubt about it.
Is anyone doing smooch in the round? I hate to seam - wondering if anyone else is feeling the same.
Bought the Cotton Ease in Bubblegum "flavor" today so I should be starting any minute!
Gina
Hey Gina! Glad you're joining us. I forgot that Maggi had asked if I was working in the round. I decided not to with this top. I actually like the look of seams and unless I've got a ton of ends to weave in from stripes or something, I don't mind seaming up sides too much (now attaching sleeves is something else entirely!). I think Smooch would be fine done in the round. If you're not attached to the look of a seam, then go for it! I'd love to hear if you decide to do it this way and if you are pleased with the results. I certainly like my Pagan, which I knit in the round.
Are you suuuuuure that you don't want falaise? It's a lot different from Rowan Glace. Rowan Glace would still work, though.
(Do the tubular cast-on! I always, always do now. Once you start, you just can't go back :-) And for this sweater, there's no need to do a matching bind-off because the neckline is a simple v-neck.)
haven't started my swatch yet, but I'd better get on it (my hands are sort of achy today, so perhaps swatching this puppy instead of knitting with the stinky sparkly floss for my sis' top would be a good idea).
