sophie again

My first sophie bag was really for my secret pal, Marie. Hi, Marie! But I couldn't tell you that until we did our big reveal at the end of May. My secret pal, by the way, was Sarah. Thanks for everything, Sarah!

Anyway, I just had to make another Sophie bag for myself. This time I used some Cascade 220 I got from Colleen at our Knitsmiths' swap. I really love this pattern. And the lighter shades of Cascade are so pretty when felted. All sorts of little little color flecks show up that you wouldn't really notice otherwise. I think I want another one in the light green shown in the pattern pic. You can't ever have too many bags, can you?

While I was at the fabric store this week, I picked up some closures for the bags. The new beige sophie got a sweet frog closure and the pink kureyon sophie a matching zipper. Now where does one find those magnetic purse snaps?

Magnetic snaps can be found at JoAnn's and Hobby
Lobby. I found them in two different sizes and in
silver and gold toned.

Susan, you found magnetic snaps at JoAnns?! I've been to three places already, including a JoAnns and haven't found them. Ugh! I'm happy with what I ended up with for these bags, but for my next I really want to use the magnetic snaps. I guess I'll just keep trying other JoAnns stores.

Have you used the magnetic snaps? How hard are they to "install"? Would they hold alright in the felted fabric, do you think?

Thanks!

Your bags look good - I've been reading your site for a while now and really like it. I wanted to ask where you got the Sophie bag pattern? I love it in Pink Kureyon - very cool.

Do you have Beverly's fabric stores near you? I just bought a magnetic snap there last weekend. Very easy to install and *so* neat-o!

The sophie pattern is from the online knitting magazine, Magknits. It's a great pattern!

The Joann's salesperson said that the snaps "fly off the shelves as soon as we get them in". I got mine at Hobby Lobby.

There is a great tutorial with photos at Hello
Knitty. They recommend reinforcing with perforated
plastic canvas. There are no instructions with the
magnetic snaps, BTW.
I made two bags out of Ironstone Island cotton. I will be lining them and putting in snaps this weekend and will report back.

I found purse snaps at Michael's in the sewing notions section. I used one on a crocheted purse and there were no directions for how to use it. I just stuck it in the flap and crocheted a flower to put over the top snap part where the metal showed. :)

I bet Fabric Place would have them. A London friend told me about a velvet jacket she bought that had magnetic snaps enclosed in the front facing. Cool idea!

I found the magnetic snaps at Wal-Mart, for about 3 bucks. I haven't used them yet, but I couldn't resist picking up something new.

I just bought the magnetic snaps at Jo-Ann's online store. I think you have to look under "puse accessories," and all they seemed to have is 1/2" black. I haven't been able to find them in either Michael's or Jo-Ann's stores, either.

I've also seen the snaps at Hancock Fabrics along with a pretty good selection of bamboo and acrylic purse handles.

I am going to have to make this bag. Your bags turned out great.

The snaps are at The Knitting Zone under gadgets.
That's Mary Moran's site.

Lacis in Berkeley, CA have the magnetic snaps, and great purse handles too. They have a website and do mail order. Have fun.

Don“t use the magnetic closures, they are not good for credit cards and other cards with a magnetic stripe on it

Posted by: Barbro at June 6, 2004 5:04 PM

Thanks Barbro, I hadn't thought of that. That makes me feel better that I haven't been able to find the magnetic snaps. Anyone out there who's used the snaps had problems with this?

Posted by: alison at June 7, 2004 8:54 AM

Yes!!! DON'T USE THEM! I managed to wipe out almost every bank card and credit card (one by one as I pulled each out individually and swiped them past the magnetic). So frustrating because it took me forever to figure out what the problem was, and even longer to have each card replaced. I had "blonde moment" after "blonde moment" (Don't be offended by blonde jokes, I am one!) Be wary of purse magnets...they are the devil in disguise! LOL!

Glad you found the link, Brandy. I did make a few changes to the pattern when making the pink Kureyon bag. I posted the details in the comments to this post. I used a little less than two skeins of Kureyon for the bag. Have fun making them! They'll make great gifts. :)

Posted by: alison at June 10, 2004 11:31 AM

ow wow COOL i went to buy yarn today after being influenced by your post and I got Kureyon also! I didnt know thats what u used. Oh better! I got color #102 (see my blog for a pic).

I don't see the details on how your made it smaller. I am a newb knitter if you can point me where in the postings or let me know I would love you forever! Also how do you attach the zipper? Yours looks so nice I want mine to be atleast half as nice!
