and?

I finished my little cashmere something something prezzie and finally started the Anne pooling scarf pattern. Did anyone get it to work?

I think my colors are too subtle to see much striping, although at least it's not too obvious when the colors get off a bit. Perhaps after a few inches the color differences will become more apparent. I do like it though. Onward, swim!

Can anyone else in the pool recommend a good online source for the Schaefer Anne yarn? Some of the knitalongers are having a hard time finding it. Thanks!

I'm not in the pool, but if you visit the Schaefer Web site, they have a list of stockists: http://www.schaeferyarn.com/stockists.htm.

Have fun!

I was just going to give you the same link that Deborah just did. I can't wait to see how your scarf will turn out.

http://knittingzone.com/
The above website has a good selection of Anne yarn, and they have fantastic customer service. Formerly it was called needletrax.com/ I have ordered from here and have always been very pleased.

I went to The Lion and the Lamb Friday and they had 2 skeins of Anne left. There was one skein of very pretty rich, dark, jewel toned red and green. I almost bought it, but I liked the rainbow at Downtown Yarns better. L&L doesn't have a website, but I bet you could call them and order. (212) 876 4303

I hope I can jump into my Pool soon. I love the reds of your scarf, Alison!

http://www.redbirdknits.com (in Canada) has carried it before and still has it up on her web store (although it says that the order is arriving soon) This is where I got mine (last year?) and I really LOVE dealing with Robyn (the owner) She is most awesome and helpful. And runs a small "shoplet" in Toronto where you can go and feel everything.

I am *still* waiting for my Ebay delivery of Anne. I emailed the seller yesterday asking where it is and got no reply, which doesn't bode well. I am hoping it shows up this week, or I might have to find it somewhere else and get my money back.

What is that in the middle of the ball of yarn? Did you make a stand to hold the yarn? This looks very interesting...

I second Knitting Zone (http://knittingzone.com). I just ordered my Anne from there and Mary is a wonderful person to do business with!

Alison your scarf is looking cool so far. Thanks for the help with the yarn suggestions. I hope to get the yarn and started on this scarf soon!

I just bought a two skeins of schaefer anne-one at Knitting Pointers in Milford,Mass-the other at my LYS-Necessities for Needlework in Westboro.I know-but I'm home-bound!!! Reading the "Zen of Knitting"- it is making me feel justified!
PS saw that the knitting garden is going to carry schaefer yarn very soon-GREAT on-line source.

Hi Alison. I've been reading your blog and admiring your work for a while. Really fascinating! The pooled scarf seems like a great idea. I am wondering, though, if other yarn would work. Specifically, would Lorna's Laces Shepherd's Sock work? I realize that for the colors to pool you need to have longer color segments and contrasting colorways. For example:

What do you think? Any comments at all will be appreciated!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone!

Janet, that's just the needles in the middle of the yarn. I keep them stuck in the ball when I'm not working on the project.

May, take a look at the pattern in Interweave Knits (if you don't want to buy it, check it out quickly at a Barnes & Noble or something). There's a picture in there which shows how the yarn needs to have been painted for it to work with the pattern. The designer does warn that it doesn't work with every space-dyed yarn out there. So do take a peek at the pic. The Lornas Laces you linked to sure is beautiful! It looks like it could work. My only concern would be the yardage. If you plan on using more than one skein, it might be hard to keep the colors lined up. Let us know what you decide!

I've had to rip the pooling scarf twice already. the colors weren't lining up correctly.

Posted by: peggy at August 4, 2004 6:47 PM

Oh yes, Peggy, that is a project hazard here. I ripped and cast on about 4 times to get the scarf to the way it is in the picture. I've since ripped that out and started again. Whee, are we having fun yet? ;0)

Alison, thanks for the clarification on the needles stuck in the middle of the yarn. Great idea to do that! Your knitting is incredible; thanks for the blog and the photos!

Thanks Alison for the advice. I took a closer look at my IK, and am leaning towards using Lorna's Laces now, even though the two yarn cost about the same. My LYS carries LL but not Anne, and I'd like to see the colorway in person. Thanks again!

hi alison,

long time lurker (i love your blog!), but this is the first time i've commented.

i'm working on the pooling scarf too and i've got about a foot and a half done. it totally works! i bought my yarn directly from cheryl schaefer. she works in interlaken which is a 30 minute drive from ithaca where i go to school. she was really nice and i bought three skeins of anne. cheryl said she wasn't sure the pooling scarf would work on all skeins of anne yarn. she said that the dye pot she uses is a little short for the anne yarn and sometimes she scrunches up the yarn a bit and that might make the colors off. i think this pattern would work best with colors that are very distinct from each other. the skein i'm working with now is really pretty -- light blue, dark blue, rust, brown. if you want, i can email you a picture of my progress so far.

good luck with your scarf and other work!
