redhead

before I became a knitter, I used to read books

I finished my calmer lace cap! This is such a great pattern. I've made three of these so far and with some calmer still in my stash, I don't think it'll be my last. This one matches my red fall coat perfectly. Now I'm all set for fall, except for some gloves, which I will have to buy. I'm not up for making matching gloves right now. Too many fingers.

That's what I love about hats - no fingers.

PS - I did finally get the lace to work out correctly in the round. I know it's probably just me being a bit daft not getting it at first, but in case it will help any others out there who might be thinking of converting this pattern, here's what I did. I cast on two fewer stitches (those that would have been seamed together), and started the hat off with garter stitch in the round. Then when the lace begins, just do the parts in the **'s. But do the whole thing in **'s, don't forget the yo at the beginning or the yo at the end, otherwise you'll mess up your stitch count and start to lose the lovely lace pattern above the join.

PPS - For anyone else thinking about making this cap, I should mention that I think the size as written is rather large, especially since calmer, being cotton, will stretch. I used US7's and 86 stitches and it fits my head nice and snug.

Wow - cute! So it worked out doing it in the round w/out the seam in the back... I like it - and the color too.

I hear you about the fingers, miss. :) Love the cap! Love it on you too!

very pretty!

what about some fingerless mittens? they go quick and aren't so fiddly

Your hat is great...would you share any adjustments you make while knitting in the round, or were you able to follow the pattern exactly.

I've made a flat version, but would like to do one in the round...

Hmmm... fingerless mittens. I like the idea, but it's my fingers that tend to get cold. Do you find that it warms your hands enough? I do like the little pattern in Weekend Knitting. ;0)

Sure, Syliva, I'll try to post tomorrow with my aura cap suggestions. :)

I like it! I have one ball of red calmer leftover from another project. I wonder what I'll do with it. Hmmmmm.......

p.s. Did you use just one ball?

Posted by: Lynette at October 11, 2004 11:53 AM

That's beautiful. I'm sort of new to knitting, so it looks like it was crocheted to my newbie eyes. Interesting knitting stitch which I have no idea how you obtained.

Lynette, even less than one ball! I have delusions of making another cap with the leftovers. I'm not yet convinced that it'll be enough though.

The stitch pattern is alternating rows of *K2, yo* and *yo, SSK*. It's a pretty standard way of achieving a sort of zigzag lace look.

it's adorable! thanks for posting your notes for knitting it in the round. i may have to get the book just for this pattern, it is so cute.

"that's what I like about hats -- no fingers"!!!! I laughed and laughed! Cuter than a button, that cap.

I've never made a flat one -- I just have a two stitch mock seam at the back from following the patttern stitch. I tried to eliminate the extra stitch, but I couldn't get that to work. In any case your hat looks so incredible I'm almost thinking I need more Calmer to make more of these caps!
