crazy (for) socks

and the stripes even match!

My Idena Crazy socks are done. I love them. And can I just say that I really like the way DK weight socks knit up?! I like how fast they go and I really like the thickness of the sock. There need to be more socks on US4's in my life. So I took a little virtual stroll over to the Knitting Zone and ordered the Lorna's Laces in china blue that I've been lusting after for so long. In sport weight, bay-bee!

And more proof of just how crazy I am about socks now, I rushed out and bought this sock book recommended to me by Nicole, who is making the cutest little cable socks for her sock pal based on this pattern in the book. I loved that pattern and immediately went searching for the book. The day it arrived, I cast on for their basic sock with the fabulous supermerino yarn I purchased for my mom's friend. I simply can't say enough good things about this yarn. The colors, the hand, the gauge (on US6's!): all wonderful.

color #122 - "shades of seafoam"

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Is that Art Yarns Supermerino, my favorite yarn? It works for socks?!? Are they super thick? I just love that yarn - great color too.

Now there is an idea. Socks in a weekend!

I understand where you're coming from - when you posted your sockapalooza I didn't join because I'd never made socks, but it inspired me to give it a try. I finished my first sock last night and I love it. I walked around the house wearing one sock. I've already started the second - Can't wait to have a pair. You're look terrific. People say sock knitting is addictive - I'm starting to understand them.

Pretty socks! I love quick sport weight socks too. One year I had a bad case of bronchitis and managed to knit up 3 pairs of socks out of Wool-East Sport in various colors while I laid around on the couch. Thanks for the reminder that socks don't have to be fingering weight and can be much nicer yarns than Wool-Ease!

Same with me on the Sockapalooza...but now that I've made a pair I am totally hooked. I want to wear handmade socks every day!

Nice socks! I just made some using Sandnes Smart sportweight, and my husband loves them. They are very soft.

I also just finished my second Weasley sweater, with a Z for my daughter: http://thedilettante.blogspot.com

And I did a fix of a baby tart hat but I wasn't actually in the Fixathon (just inspired by it).

More socks are on my horizon, in Cascade Fixation...

I like knitting socks, but I hate how long it takes me to make a pair, I'm thinking maybe a larger guage sock isn't a bad idea. I have tons of sock yarn in fingering weight in my stash, but maybe I should try some in dk weight, like you said it might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Thanks for the thoughts.

Lovely shades of seafoam. Is it Artyarns merino?

Do I detect a "Sockapalooza 2" in the works? Perhaps on US4 needles or greater?

Posted by: nona at March 3, 2005 12:08 PM

whee! hooray for DK weight socks! I agree, they knit up so much faster. I'll have to get myself some LL!

Yes, the supermerino is from ArtYarns. It only comes in these cute little 100yd hanks, so I'm not sure about doing a whole sweater in it but I really do like it for these socks. The weight reminds me of the Little Lola worsted weight sock yarn from Schaefer.

So do you think 1 shepherd sport hank is enough to knit one pair of socks? Am nervous about ordering just one, but am liking the $9 price tag!

I'm grinning so hard, my face hurts. But in a good way. What a different tune from December ;-)

Can't believe that you matched the stripes. What wt. is the new blue sock? Socks on 6's sound nice :)

I know Valentina, I can't believe it myself! But I think the real cinchers were how cold my feet have been this winter and seeing what a fun little project DK/sport weight socks can be. It was the tiny gauge of fingering yarns that was not exciting me (and still isn't with my koigu sock pal socks). I don't mind using dpn's as long as it's not some long, tedious project, like a sleeve (and isn't a sock just a long sleeve with a 90 degree turn in it?!).

Liz, I don't know about the Shepherd Sport yet. I bought two just in case. I'll let you know when I make some progress on my socks how much I need. For the ArtYarns Supermerino I'd say that you definitely need three hanks unless you're doing short ankle socks or smaller than average foot length.

Vicki, the new striped socks are DK weight (knitted on US4's) and the Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport calls for about the same needle size.

I'm going to have to give them a go.sockapalooza socks are finished!

Posted by: cara at March 4, 2005 8:30 AM

US 6!!! For a sock! Really? Wow!

Posted by: Jenny at March 4, 2005 10:59 AM

I just want to say--YEA socks! I love the stripes. I just started the socks in the new IK in blue (Fortissima Socka). I seem to be stuck in that color right now.
