it's official

I'm sure you all know what this is.

for those of you who have been on Mars, it's a Clapotis

Yes, I've succumbed and have started a Clapotis. This is very surprising to me, as although I do love the design, I am totally not a shawl or scarf person. But I'm going to a wedding in the fall where I need to wear a fancy little dress and will actually need a lovely little something to keep my bare shoulders warm. And what a perfect excuse to try out that new Malabrigo merino! I'm one skein in and it's as soft as a pillow. And no pilling or felting to report so far - but I have been warned by several people that this yarn is so soft it does tend to felt and pill. Given this tendency, I thought that a shawl might be a better way to use this yarn than in something like an everyday sweater or mittens. So I picked up my favorite colorway, the incredible Sunset that caught my eye when I first saw this yarn. And look at how pretty it is with the very first dropped stitches.

So, it's official, I have joined the masses. In fact, I have become utterly banal. I realized this when my in-laws were visiting last month. We have a tiny little compact car, so when they visit we have to rent a minivan. And then we ended up eating at Applebee's (we'd never been in one before but the boys always insist that they want to eat at "the apple restaurant"). So there I was, sitting in an Applebee's with my minivan parked outside and it struck me that I could have been any mom, anywhere, in Boston, in Ohio, in Texas, and been in the same identical restaurant eating the same food, with the same car outside, wearing my same Gap clothes and Lands End shoes. Thank goodness we were at least all speaking German! And now I will have a Clapotis, like everyone else in blogland. (Anything else we all seem to have to have besides a blog and a Clapotis?)

I must say that the pattern is fabulous though.

And I really liked the minivan too. (Hee. Hee.)

Well, not all Clapotis(es?) are created equal, and yours is going to be mighty beautiful! Love that colorway. And orange and blue look so jazzy together.

Well pretty soon everyone will have a nothin but a t!

Posted by: patti at June 3, 2005 9:54 AM

Maybe I'm thinking of this the wrong way. Perhaps I'm now officially one of the "cool kids" who have made nifty Clapotis! Then again there's always the populist approach: "Clapotis and Applebee's and nothing but t's for everyone!" ;0)

Posted by: alison at June 3, 2005 10:10 AM

Go to Chilis next time - its better and there are fewer minivans in the parking lot.

Posted by: CursingMama at June 3, 2005 10:22 AM

Aw. Don't knock the Lands End shoes! (The minivan, yeah, that's mockable. I am so terribly impressed that you have twin toddlers and yet you still drive a compact. You get at least a thousand coolness points for that!)

Your Clapotis is going to be fabulous. I particularly like that the variegation is very gentle.

Posted by: Beth S. at June 3, 2005 10:24 AM

they say that cliches become cliches because they are true. if clapotis has become banal, it's because it's goooood... i'll keep telling myself that because i'm about to start my third!

Posted by: anna at June 3, 2005 10:34 AM

Oh, I would never knock the Lands End shoes. Until last weekend, they were all I ever wore. Looooove them! That's exactly my problem: I like the Gap clothes, and Lands End shoes, the Clapotis, and the minivan. I really like them. Just like everyone else. ;0)

Posted by: alison at June 3, 2005 10:37 AM

I haven't made a Clapotis yet, but it's not from a lack of wanting! I think I'm the only knitter on Earth who hasn't.

Posted by: Jenn at June 3, 2005 10:43 AM

Gosh, that must be some fancy wedding you're going to! ;)

Posted by: shannon at June 3, 2005 10:54 AM

Absolutely Anna, banal need not be bad. We wouldn't say it was bad to have a washing machine or straight teeth just because everyone seems to have them nowadays! It's just not very unique to have a washing machine. Or a Clapotis on the needles. It's still a good thing though!

Jenn, I believe you must be right, you are the only one left.

Posted by: alison at June 3, 2005 10:55 AM

It looks great, what a perfect fall clapotis in those beautiful colors. You've never been to Applebee's?!? That's just craziness.

Posted by: Vicki at June 3, 2005 10:58 AM

Oh Oh. I've just succumbed to the Clapotis virus myself. I have some Lorna's laces in an Iris colorway and after I started something else in this yarn I was disappointed in it and the Clapotis seems to be the solution. I was afraid to admit it, but since you have joined in, what can be wrong with it?
Nothing!

Posted by: ELizabeth at June 3, 2005 11:16 AM

Try ditching the stitchmarkers and purling the stitches between the twisted stitches. You will zip along much faster and they all unravel just the same.

Posted by: Judith at June 3, 2005 11:24 AM

Jenn, I'll join you as the only other blogger who hasn't made a Clapotis! They look lovely, but I have so many other things to work on. Now, nothin but a t, *that* I have to make up very soon :-)

Posted by: Kathy at June 3, 2005 11:27 AM

You'll love it!!

Posted by: margene at June 3, 2005 11:45 AM

add me to the no clapotis column either. I'm also not a scarf/shawl person. Nor have I had the time unfortunately :(
Minivans...well its all I've driven for the last 6 years or so. My husband was so resistant to ever buying one until he drove one. Good thing too because when we bought our first, we only had one child. Now we have 4 and a minivan is a necessity!
I'm not much for Gap clothes (because they do not fit so well on this body that has born four children in 6 years) but I love my Lands End all weather mocs!

Posted by: Carla at June 3, 2005 11:46 AM

Another blogger sans Clapotis here but I'm living vicariously thru you Alison...what a splendid version! Love the sunny yellow, it's so *you* :)

Posted by: Debi at June 3, 2005 11:53 AM

I haven't made Clapotis, but then I've only just learned to knit, and haven't finished my Weasley yet. (My "learn to knit" project.) I'm almost done the back, though, so I'm nearly one third of the way through.

Posted by: Andrea at June 3, 2005 11:57 AM

Don't feel bad bloggers w/o a Clapper, I don't have a blog or Clapotis. :) I've been putting it off for the longest, but may start this weekend with some recycled Manos yarn. Can't wait to see your finished Clapotis.

Posted by: Liz at June 3, 2005 11:58 AM

Well all have fiber problems in common too...and I don't mean the #2 fiber problems... ; D

Posted by: Christie at June 3, 2005 12:00 PM

Well, I'm one of the -follow the pack gals- and have succumbed to the Clapotis and the NBaT. I am on the 6th repeat of section 3. whew. Re: the minivan... in this part of the land, suv's reign. It's insane, even one child families drive enormous hummers or suv's.

Posted by: Carolyn at June 3, 2005 12:05 PM

I haven't made a clapotis either - only because the clapotis stars haven't aligned yet for me. It's funny how I take pride in being different than "everybody" in some ways but also take pride in being "normal" like "everybody else" in others. Is there a sociology lesson here somewhere?

Posted by: LouVFS at June 3, 2005 12:28 PM

Hi Alison,
I think the mere fact that you had the insight to notice that you could have been AnyMom in Anytown, USA, as well as the fact that you were disturbed by this, immediately sets you apart from the pack!
Your clapotis is beautiful - love the color choice. I am even tempted to make it, despite the fact that I don't wear scarves.
BTW, I was in the sweater class that you covered for Johanna at A Good Yarn. My sweater is almost done, and I am so pleased with it! You can check it out at my blog - www.yarnspin.blogspot.com.
Hopefully I'll see you around!
Take care,
Carla

Well, Alison, knitting Clapotis is a requirement for being a Drafty Lady....

And I'm in love with that colorway. Gorgeous.

Posted by: Iris at June 3, 2005 1:27 PM

I, too, have not made Clapotis. But the temptation has tried to creep in, believe me!

Posted by: Madalyn at June 3, 2005 1:50 PM

I have no clapotis...or Flower Basket Shawl...but I do have a ROGUE and I'm one sock in on Retro Rib...does that count? :)

I love the sunset colorway...so cheery.

Posted by: heather at June 3, 2005 2:15 PM

Ah but the difference is that, while everyone on Blogland may have a Clapotis (I don't . . . yet), it will still set you apart from the Gap/Land's End crowd! Minivan or not, you will never be just like everyone else!

Posted by: Deb at June 3, 2005 2:20 PM

just started my clapper last weekend, and it's lovely, though i'm not really understanding how the unraveling will happen (i'm on the 3rd repeat in section 2). I am just going to put my faith in the pattern (as everyone else seems to have done!) and know that it will all turn out OK. I'll be coming back to knitsmiths soon enough for some moral support on this one ;)

Posted by: Jess at June 3, 2005 2:26 PM

Honey, you start the trends. Many blogs I've visited today all have a sockapal2za button.

Just WHAT do you say to that? 200 some people out there are making socks in a sock-along :) That YOU started. Don't worry. This is good.

It is nice being all high up in a minivan or SUV, but I sure wouldn't want to pay for the gas.

Posted by: freecia at June 3, 2005 2:30 PM

Now THAT's an interesting color for the Clap. I think I had a cat that color once. I have grown to love my minivan too. I got tired of cracking my head getting the child in and out of the carseat. Sometimes we have to sacrifice principle and individuality for practicality and convenience. Yep, I'm all out of "cool".

Posted by: Julia at June 3, 2005 2:50 PM

Gorgeous!!

Posted by: Michele at June 3, 2005 2:53 PM

and it's not blue? what happened there?,dont forget about the sophia bag now, even Harlot did them for Xmas last year.

Posted by: cara at June 3, 2005 2:54 PM

Is it so wrong to be just like everyone else? This coming from someone that longs to fit in so badly with others. We don't have a car but I do have a clapotis I never wore. I, on the other had, seem to always stand apart and I'd rather just be a mom wearing Gap (don't own any), with a minivan (can't drive). ;)

Posted by: ~Jo~ at June 3, 2005 3:48 PM

Anoterh non-clapotis here, and I don't ever intend to knit one. Why? Well because everybody else has. I'm not knocking it, it's a great pattern, is lovely looking, is so adaptable because everyone's using different yarns, but I'm such a conformist in other areas of my life, I want to be a rebel. (insert evil laugh here)

But love that colorway!

Posted by: Rebekah at June 3, 2005 4:12 PM

Count me as another who has yet to knit a Clapotis, although I do have yarn in the stash earmarked for 2 of them. Now all I need is a knitblog. Wait, I take that back; I have too little time for knitting as it is! :-)

Posted by: Tonia at June 3, 2005 8:13 PM

I haven't knit a Clapotis, either, but it would make me a rebel if I did. Although the pattern is common in BlogLand, gals around these parts don't wear shawls and knitters are a rarity. Knitting may be enjoying a renaissance, but I still attract a LOT of attention when I knit in public.

Posted by: Dani at June 4, 2005 10:55 AM

that is a gorgeous colorway. you know how to make that pattern your own. i have not seen anything like that. you're so funny!

Posted by: froggy at June 4, 2005 12:57 PM

Love these colors! I think I am one of the few who have not knit one of these. I have to find this yarn somewhere!!!! It just looks so beautiful and everyone talks about how soft it is. Can't wait to hear how it wears for you.

Posted by: Lee Anne at June 4, 2005 6:00 PM

So glad to see you have finally come to the darkside. ;) Have fun with it! :)

Posted by: Jessica at June 6, 2005 9:30 AM

That is a very pretty Clapotis.

And you will never be just like everyone else. You are way too special! Minivan or no. ;-)
