finishing sophie

You didn't think she was all done, did you?

Yes, those are scissors. Yes, I am cutting sophie. No worries, I simply cut some slits evenly around the edge, so I could slide some pretty yarn through to bring a little color to my plain black sophie. (I got this idea from a pretty little bag we have at the store: the Felted Jelly Bag from Designs by Shelley.)

For the trim, I used the fun, retro-colored i-cord yarn I got at Habu last year. I never quite knew what to do with this neat stuff. Glad I got some though, because it brightens up sophie just perfectly.

Final pictures, for the felting spectators:

Thanks to Julie for her wonderful pattern. It's definitely my go-to bag pattern.

Looks great! Love your modifications to make it uniquely yours.

Oh! I love it. Such a great way to use that yarn or scarf that you're just not sure about.

ooo that's sooo cute! great idea with the cord - makes me think of all the cute scarves I"ve seen around...and my grommeter!

Alison,

The i-cord totally makes the bag yours! I love the way it looks. You may have single handedly motivated me to knit a bag!

what a great idea to add the I-cord.
very cute !

Wow. Wowza! What a great accent. The i-cord at the top makes it POP! You've inspired me. I've never been brave enough to cut anything I've felted...but I think I'm going to have to try it now. :)

Alison: I think I will make a bag, since if it turns out half as beautiful as yours, I will be happy. But please! the scissors scare me! Please give me a hint: what else did you have to do to make cutting slits in your bag not become a disaster? Do you have to sew/finish the cut edges or does the felting keep any ravelling from happening. Please let us know, since I will be worrying about your lovely bag falling apart!

Super cute Sophie! And I love the added embellishment! Thanks for the linkage :)

That is a great idea Alison! I always liked the bag, now I love it even more so.

Sophie with a little flair! Je te suis, je te sois, ooh la la! I love it!

Posted by: Tiffany at July 20, 2005 2:10 PM

It's beautiful! Did you also alter the size? It looks a little larger than the picture with the pattern. You did a great job!!! I have to have one.

Posted by: Katherine at July 20, 2005 2:28 PM

The Habu really sets off the rest of the bag. Nice!

Posted by: Kathy at July 20, 2005 2:35 PM

Cute and clever! Definitely adds some spice to the bag.

That is a great idea!

Love what you did to Sophie...another item to add to the knitted wish list.
Thanks for the vote of confidence on my frogged sock. LYS #1 didn't have #2 Brittanys so I have to wait till Saturday to start again. In the meantime, I am really digging the ankle socks! Thanks for the great pattern!

Beautiful bag Alison!! You certainly know how to adapt patterns to be uniquely you and uniquely lovely!

Love the trim!

Barbara, I didn't do anything else to the bag before cutting it. Just regular old felting is enough to keep it from unravelling. Just think of felt like you buy in the craft store and snip away!

Katherine, I used one ball of Cascade 220, just like the pattern calls for. I made the handles a little longer, cause I like longer handles. Felting's not an exact science. I could have let it felt down a little more, I guess, but I liked this size when I checked it after the first time through the wash. It's still plenty felted, you can tell that the stitch defnition is mostly gone. The only other change might have been gauge as I was knitting. I used the same needles as called for in the pattern, but didn't check my gauge, since the whole thing was going to be felted down to the size I wanted anyway. Oh, and I'm not a very thorough blocker. I didn't cut out pieces of cardboard to make it a perfect triangle-y shape. I just stuffed some plastic bags in it, so it looks more rounded.

What a great idea! The bag is super cute!
