the next deadline

Now that I've made my Halloween deadline, it's time to get cracking on my next deadline project, the weasley sweater. November 18th is creeping closer and closer!

just over two weeks left to get from here to a finished sweater

As of today, I'm into the armhole shaping on the first piece, the back.

hey, that's not how Molly does it!

So I'm cheating a little and using Ann Budd's excellent Handy Book of Sweater Patterns to fudge up the numbers to convert Mrs. Weasley's simple drop-shoulder pattern into a set-in sleeve. I just know that it will look a lot better on me. I was tempted to add waist shaping, but didn't want to get too far away from the original look, so I decided against it. Plus, it's faster knitting without it.

Come on magic needles: knit, knit, knit!

I'm sure Molly would have used set-in sleeves on her *own* sweater, if she'd had time after knitting presents for the entire clan!

I am almost finished with J's Weasley sweater -- just one sleeve to go. The finishing is all done, since I picked up and knit the sleeves down from the armholes. I even did the neck already, because when I finish this sleeve, I want to be DONE! I wasn't very happy with the pattern I used, though, so I'll be using Ann Budd's book to make S's sweater. Hope to have pics of an FO very soon on my blog -- can't wait to see my name in red!

I think set-in sleeves would look better on me too, but I'm not disassembling my sweater now! ;)

How funny the date you've picked to finish your sweater is the day I get to start mine :) The yarn is my birthday present to myself. I can't wait to see how your modifications turn out, since I'll definitely bow to your technical expertise instead of my fudge it 'til it fits usual methods...

I'm feeling the movie deadline loom closer too, I'm about halfway through my scarf!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with Harry Potter projects still in need of finishing. I have to admit, I just started my scarf last night. But if I knit 6in a day, I should be done by the 18th, right?

I find it very hard to motivate myself on my PA scarf, but I am managing, it's just endless island of stockinette!! gets sooooooo boring.. but i am more then half done, I need to GET ON IT!

Hi Alison, I finished my PoA scarf just in time! And now I'm starting matching mittens -- then, maybe a hat? And of course, finish the Gryffindor socks before the movie premier! How many HP items must one finish to get a maroon name? Hmmmm...

At least you're not working in pairs this time! I have no doubt you'll finish, given how you flew through the "Things". Knit on, lady!

Hey Alison, so I'm confused about the sleeves. Are the sleeves your doing on your Weasley different than the pattern that you made available a while back? I'm making my Weasley in the round (am almost to the armholes) and was planning on splitting it at the armholes and using the pattern you put out from the armholes up... Are you doing something differently than the pattern you put out?

Yes, Jeanie, I'm making my weasley different from the original pattern. The weasley pattern I posted is meant to be a replica of the original Rowan pattern and the sweaters in the movies, which are drop shoulder sweaters with no armhole shaping whatsoever. The drop shoulder design is perfect for Molly Weasley's basic no-frills sweater and it's a great design for a beginner knitter like many of the weasley-alongers. But the drop shoulder isn't the most flattering shape to a smaller woman's figure. There's some extra bulk in the chest and body that I, frankly, just can't fill. So I'm using Ann Budd's sweater pattern book to change the sweater to have set-in sleeves with shaped armhole openings (like in the picture) which reduces bulk in that area. My sweater shouldn't have that oversized look, but will otherwise look like the original weasley.

If anyone wants to make a weasley with a differnt sleeve/armhole, I would definitely recommend Ann Budd's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns. It's got standard patterns for all styles of sweaters in all gauges and sizes. She's done ALL the work for you!

I was thinking of knitting a Fair Isle for The Princess, but I just asked her if she would like a Weasley, because I am dying to make one after reading about them and seeing pictures here. I just got Anne Budd's book and look forward to using it, although for a 10-year-old I will likely use your drop shoulder pattern.

Okay Alison, thanks for the info! I think I'll stick with your original pattern version and will send pics when finished. I too am a smaller woman, but prefer the oversized look of this sweater and am pretty much used to not filling out certain parts of sweaters by now ;-)

Can't wait to see yours!
