everybody loves a beret

I don't know what I'm doing finishing this instead of the two pairs of socks still on my Christmas list, but here it is, my Malabrigo beret.

Blame it on my hands, which got to touch the Malabrigo again during hat class last night and then wouldn't be satisfied with any other yarn for my evening knitting. I do believe they are getting spoiled. Seriously, after the Malabrigo, the Koigu seemed scratchy. The Koigu! Of course, that may have something to do with how wicked dry my hands are. Only the malabrigo keeps me from feeling like some sort of reptile. All I want for Christmas is gloves in a bottle!

And maybe a little more Malabrigo. (Hint, hint.)

Just wanted to say I enjoy reading your blog. Your knitting (quantity and quality) is inspiring!

What a great hat. It was a worthy diversion, and hey ... you still have four days until Christmas.

Posted by: Ruth at December 21, 2005 9:53 AM

cute!

I'm with you on the malibrigo. I made some mittens for my Mom a few weeks ago and am now knitting her a matching scarf (hope I finish before Saturday).
Love your blog!

I feel your Christmas knitting pain. I'm 15 cm up a cabled vest for my uncle with a 44 inch chest. But somehow, instead of working with the totally lucious Rowan Plaid, I'm completely sucked into some strange wool my roommate's mother gave me. I'm knitting (wait for it) a garter stitch scarf. Oh the shame. Happy Holidays! Your beret looks lovely, by the by...

Posted by: Elspeth at December 21, 2005 10:52 AM

Must. resist. siren song. of. Malabrigo.

Your beret is lovely!

Posted by: Jess at December 21, 2005 11:01 AM

Gorgeous! And our soon-to-open very LYS owner has been showing off the Malabrigo color cards. I'll be trying to save all of my yarn money until May!

we must be on the same wavelength ... i just started a beret last night, after finishing two pairs of socks :) i'm using ann budd's pattern from her handy pattern book. the yarn you used is very pretty. subtle. i think i need some.
the beret i'm working on is a gift, but i think i *need* one too!

Posted by: gray la gran at December 21, 2005 11:48 AM

Oh my goodness, the Malabrigo beret looks like a cloud on your head, in the best possible way. I want to go get some right now! So pretty.

Posted by: Karma at December 21, 2005 12:13 PM

Very cool beret!!! Can I ask what pattern you used, and what size needles? Thanks!

Posted by: caitlyn at December 21, 2005 1:01 PM

You are very bad. :-) You should know better than to show that beautiful hat and describe Malabrigo as softer than KOIGU! Of COURSE I had to run right over to Windsor and get some for ME! They only had about 10 skeins left -so I think you influenced ALOT of peole today. I have been wanting to do this hat: http://www.interweave.com/knit/interweave_knits/web_projects/win_05/Short-Row-Hat.pdf
I think it will look good in the Malabrigo.

Thank heavens I have no holiday gifts to finish or I would have to stop reading your blog altogether- such a bad influence you are!!!

seriously- your hat looks fantastic! thanks for the idea.

is it the malibrigo - or is it procrastination??

i found myself doing the very same thing yesterday.... i know mine is definitely procrastination :P

You Christmas knitting rebel, you.

;-)

Very cute! I have some Malabrigo I'm dying to use, but the colors don't suit me. I'm waiting to realize it will look lovely on one of my family or friends so I can knit it up!

Posted by: Monica at December 21, 2005 2:01 PM

That hat is very nice, makes me want to knit a beret... I've never had one before.

Gloves in a bottle... I don't know about that stuff. Hours after I put it on I got this strange feeling on my hands, kind of like they were wrapped tightly in saran wrap, I'm sure it's just a mental thing. My lys owner and I tried out a free sample they sent her. She's afraid to buy any because it might be habit-forming, hehe.

So pretty!! Looking great while keeping out the cold!

Posted by: Lynn at December 21, 2005 2:17 PM

That beret is so cute- I just wanted to pass on a little info, I wasn't sure if you were aware- Malabrigo is made by the same people who do the yarn on handpaintedyarn.com (and a bit cheaper, although you don't get to see the colors in person and it sometimes takes a while to ship). Knitter's Review did a whole thing about it, I was shocked to hear it myself. Sorry I don't have the link right here.

Also, I remembered your girl mini-Weasley dilemma- one of the LYSes has a couple balls of the purpley shade, I would love to send them on to you if you would like.

Posted by: Cathi at December 21, 2005 2:54 PM

Caitlyn, I used US8 needles and here's the link to the pattern again: Morehouse Merino's Le Beret. I can't wait for their pattern book to come out in the spring!

Glad to hear, Beth, that you found some Malabrigo! We've still got some at a good yarn. ;0)

Thanks for reminding everyone, Cathi. I included a link to handpainted yarns in the comments the last time I mentioned this beret, but it's worth repeating. Note, however, that now that the worsted merino is for sale in stores it is not available through that website anymore.

Just back from the LYS, with a skein of Malabrigo in violetas. Am holding you personally responsible (so I owe you a thanks!) It does feel as good as you said, and the colors are gorgeous. Mmmmmm.

But now, Christmas knitting for my Pop or hat for me? Hat's winning. Uh oh.

Posted by: Thea at December 21, 2005 3:20 PM

Very nice! I like the light pastel blue!

Posted by: Lolly at December 21, 2005 3:27 PM

Nice!

Posted by: Leisl at December 21, 2005 3:54 PM

I love the beret!

I ordered from handpainted yarn timing-wise so that the roving [!] and 6 ply bulky (which actually isn't that bulky) arrives just as I am finishing up my holiday knitting for other people. I cannot wait!

Posted by: jess at December 21, 2005 4:25 PM

You deserve a break from all that Christmas knitting and everything else before you had to do for a deadline. I haven't come across Malabrigo here in the UK which is just as well or I would have been tempted to get some too!
Enjoy your hat!

Posted by: Marie-france at December 21, 2005 5:10 PM

Sweet beret! I know what you mean by the Malabrigo. Have you tried a pair of socks? I have ~ simply delicious.

Posted by: Dawn at December 21, 2005 5:28 PM

Beautiful! So nicely done. I hear ya about sneakin' in some non-Christmas knitting. Somehow a scarf for me got finished among all the other stuff. How did that happen?? ;-)

Posted by: Mary at December 21, 2005 5:35 PM

So cute!

Posted by: Nadia Lewis at December 21, 2005 5:42 PM

I mentioned to my Grandma (avid knitter) that we should give her yarn for Christmas this year and Mom said that Grandma showed up for her Christmas visit with (almost) nothing to knit and announcing loudly she didn't need to bring more projects because there was yarn for her under the tree.

She can't remember what story she told me five minutes after she told it but she sure remembered that casual remark I made two months ago!

Good thing we did get that stash of merino, silk, cashmere blend from Elann for her!

Hi!

How does gloves in a bottle smell?

I love lotions!

Me too. What pattern and needles did you use? Merry Christmas

Posted by: kathy b. at December 21, 2005 10:28 PM

Thea, if you're looking for some enabling, you've come to the right place. Hat for you, all the way. At least for today!

Check the comments above, Kathy for my earlier comment. All the details are there! :)

That hat? Absolutely gorgeous! I also love the picture, hee.

And now I need a beret too.

Posted by: Rose at December 22, 2005 6:38 AM

Oh la la! I love that beret! I never actually though about wearing a beret, but you have shown me the light. I must buy some Malabrigo and I must have a beret!

Posted by: Marlena at December 22, 2005 11:13 AM

Excellent stealth knitting! I think it's good to stick in a little beret between socks - it will keep you happy!

Posted by: Julia at December 22, 2005 9:47 PM

I know how you feel... I have a felted bag to finish, which probably won't go under the tree until christmas morning.
