no problem

In contrast to yesterday's post, let me share with you my progress on the Child's Placket Neck Pullover, also from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. This sweater has the exact same structure as the man's zip raglan, but without the ribbing (and with the new corrected pattern) it's a whole different story!

babies are soooo much smaller than daddys!

The only change I made to the pattern was to add one buttonhole on the placket (the pattern doesn't have you make any and calls for beads that can be pushed through the knitted fabric instead of buttons). I've still got the seaming at the underarm to do and a little girly embroidery (I'm embroidering the baby's initial "E"on the front, see?), but the knitting went super quick. And I love how it came out. I was worried that the style wouldn't be girly enough, but seeing Wendy's beautiful finished sweater helped me change my mind. And the color of this Classic Elite Spotlight is so amazing that it convinced me. It seems so perfect for a little baby girl sweater, that I'm not even having the slightest regrets about taking it out of my stash and using it. Really no regrets. The remaining five balls are already earmarked for another baby sweater. I'm so proud of myself!

Beautiful! Seeing yours makes me want to knit another!

Aw - too cute. I love it.

I'm going to have to make one of these -- everyone's looks fantastic! That color is gorgeous, Alison (definitely girly enough -- especially with an embroidered monogram!)!

Posted by: jess at January 26, 2006 9:34 AM

Absolutely darling! Perfect for a little girl. And thanks for futzing around with the pattern. Now we can all knit them.

It's adorable!

lovely baby sweater!! you've inspired me to try that design also! doesn't it get you though that they published Last Minute Knitted Gifts chock full of errors....grrrrrrrrr!!! bad publishers, bad publishers!

Posted by: ilikeredbean at January 26, 2006 9:44 AM

I LOVE that color.

I love that sweater. I wish my kids would wear them! I showed my girly a whole book of cool things and she said no to every one of them.

*sigh*

I'm dying to know the total number of people who signed up for Sockapaloooza!

I'm hesitating between that pattern and another for my knitting Olympics project. If you don't mind sharing, did you use a one-row buttonhole?

Posted by: ~Jo~ at January 26, 2006 10:05 AM

hi alison - i just finished my placket-neck pulli night before last (details on my blog). don't you just love the raglan shaping on babies! i wanted to tell you that instead of kitchener st on the underarms, i did a 3-needle-BO so it owuld be super secure for all that reaching and tugging they do. i like your idea about the buttonhole and will for sure do that when i make one for my girls - i opted for no buttons/beads on this version since it is for a little man. love the color you chose and the recipient will be too cute!

Posted by: jennifer at January 26, 2006 10:10 AM

Jo, I just did a regular yo, K2tog buttonhole. Now, I've got to find a nice button for it!

Excellent idea, Jennifer, to do the 3-needle bind off! Love your version of the sweater. Very nice colors. And you're right, for a boy, I don't think it needs any buttons at all.

Posted by: alison at January 26, 2006 10:21 AM

adorable and I know 2-3 babies that could use it :)
does it take a lot of yarn or finishing?? Cause I am so not good at the finishing part :)

Posted by: stinkerbell at January 26, 2006 10:36 AM

Such a cute sweater!
And thanks for the heads-up on the book, which has been on my coffee table for quite a while now. I'm sure I would have blamed myself for screwing up!

Posted by: Songbird at January 26, 2006 10:52 AM

That turned out very cute. I think I might use that pattern for my next baby knit. Those babies to be are always springing up!

I love that sweater! I frogged a poncho last year out of All-Seasons Cotton for your February Fix-It. I started a hooded beach sweater (some random rowan pattern) but Harry's grown, and I don't have enough yarn to finish.

I'll bet I have enough for a placket sweater!

I made this sweater before and really loved it. Only I wish that I had worked in a button hole, like you had done.

Posted by: Adelle at January 26, 2006 11:09 AM

I've made this sweater twice, both times using Classic Elite Star, which has a bit of lycra in it. It's a great pattern (once the cast-on stitches are corrected!) and my daughter loves hers.
(She's here - http://www.markandbeth.com/amy/images/2005/August/sweater_model.jpg - with the baby hat from LMKG)

I will make it again, but with longer sleeves.

This is just adorable -- as the mother of two girls, I can assure you that simple lines and strong, pretty color are sometimes difficult to find for baby girls, and yet they're the best way to showcase their adorable little selves.

Posted by: Erica at January 26, 2006 11:26 AM

Ahh so cute. I love knitting those little garments. So rewarding, to knit, give and receive :-)

Posted by: Yasmin at January 26, 2006 11:35 AM

Oh it's gorgeous. I'm inspired to try one myself -- and I never would have known about the errors in the book. Thanks for the heads up. I love your blog -- it inspires me. :)

*very* cute!

If you're searching for more Spotlight, I happen to know of some at a certain yarn store lying around in the 30% off clearance area...I can count colors and such for you tomorrow, if you like... :-)

The embroidery is going to add such a classy touch. It looks great!

Posted by: Pip at January 26, 2006 1:42 PM

So precious! I love the embroidery detail that you're adding. The color is gorgeous, too.

Posted by: Karma at January 26, 2006 2:21 PM

It looks great! I like the idea of the buttonhole rather than the original pattern idea with the beads. :)

Posted by: Samantha at January 26, 2006 4:47 PM

Wow, that REALLY is just lovely. I LOVE the color.

Posted by: knittingnurse at January 26, 2006 5:35 PM

It's lovely, personally I would put beads on a baby's sweater "hello"! choking hazzard :-) good modifications love the embrodiery.

Posted by: Orli at January 26, 2006 5:45 PM

A very beautiful sweater!

Posted by: Jenn at January 26, 2006 6:41 PM

Very cute. I love the colour.

Posted by: Kylie at January 26, 2006 10:48 PM

The sweater is very cute. I knit one for my son in yellow last November. I may need to make another one.

Posted by: Bear Knits at January 27, 2006 9:05 AM

that is just adorable--and makes me want to stop knitting everything I'm knitting, and only knit pink things from now on!
