turning pee pee into chocolate: a dyeing miracle

Knitbud Lisa trusted me with three gorgeous hanks of Malabrigo laceweight, which she couldn't stand because they were, in her opinion, the color of pee pee.

the Handpainted Yarn folks call it "butter"

She had seen the chocolate brown skein of bulky weight that I dyed last week and asked if I could turn that pee pee into chocolate.

Overdyeing the yellow resulted in a dark chocolate brown - I'll call it special dark - with lighter red/brown sections where the original yellow was quite light. I bet this is going to knit up really nice in lace. Hope she likes it!

Oooh, Lisa will likey! Very nice, and so much more wearable. We'll have to watch out for you and the dye pots next year when the boys go to school... this could turn into something much bigger... cue evil laughing! Hope you and S are feeling better.

Ohh, I like how it turned out! Gorgeous!

Very pretty color! I know more than a few of us would gladly take it if your knitbud doesn't ;o)

ooh! It looks lovely! All your dyeing talk has me itching to dye something...you're such a temptress!

I've seen so many wonderful dyed skeins this morning. Makes me wish I was at home to do some dyeing of my own. Hope we'll see pictures of that one knitted up.

It's lovely! I have my own skein of merino/cashmere that was given to me that is sort of pee-pee color. I was planning to overdye it at some point after I get my dyeing studio set up in the basement.

Transmutation: pee pee to chocolate.
What will they think of next? ;o)

It's beautiful. let's hope it's not called poo poo.
But did you realize that you made it Friday? I too am anxious for the weekend, but i'm having a special treat tonight so let's not wish Thursday away! :)

You know, I really liked that cream/pale yellow color, until I read this post. Thanks a lot.

(The chocolate is very nice, though.)

Nice transformation!

Posted by: Monica at May 18, 2006 9:53 AM

Doh, got ahead of myself there, didn't I, Shireen? Thanks! Wouldn't want to miss Thursday and our big plans! ;0)

And yes, Shireen, I thought of the poop thing too, luckily this brown really doesn't remind me of that at all. Phew! Turning number 1 into number 2 wouldn't really be much of an improvement, now would it? It's all crap! (Sorry, couldn't help myself.)

Haha, More of my yarn! I thought it was cream colored when I bought it, and it was, in fact peepee! Lisa and I swapped that...umm..definitely not on the day of the swap! ;)

Posted by: Amber at May 18, 2006 9:56 AM

i am the luckiest girl in the world...i have a friend that can turn unloved swap yarn (courtesy of hamster) into the most beautiful shade of brown...thank you, thank you. can't wait to embark on my very first shawl...see you friday!!!

I, too, have some hideously colored yarn from Handpainted Yarns. I've concluded that none of their yarns look as good in person as they do on-line.

Thanks for the over-dying idea. Love the chocolate!

Oh, yeah, that is gorgeous...just like a choice piece of dark chocolate, broken apart. Just lovely, Alison!

Gorgeous!

Beautiful yarn! Although I most admit my first reaction was the same as Shireen's. Being the mother of 2 boys has conditioned me to think that way :-)

Posted by: nona at May 18, 2006 11:03 AM

Boy, if you could do that in real life, I don't know whether I'd celebrate or swear off chocolate forever.
Lovely laceweight, by the way. Don't you hate it when you dye something meant for someone else, and it comes out so beautiful you practically cry when you have to give it back?

Posted by: Carrie at May 18, 2006 11:35 AM

Gorgeous! Actually I liked both colors, but now I am hungry for chocolate. (I'm ignoring the comment on the color of the yellow yarn; that kind of puts you off chocolate for a bit).

That's a gorgeous dye job! Wow!

Great job!! I love the color(s). Beautiful!

I take it you've never heard the term Y.O.U. It's the natural dyer's acronym for You're Own Urine., not an uncommon thing (I was going to use the word ingredient, but thought better of it) to use in traditional dyeing techniques. Just to clarify, I'm not THAT hard-core of a natural dyer.
I've also heard the term "blah beige" used in the dyeing world for colors like that that could use an overdyeing. That one might have been a bit too yellow to be called beige though. The chocolate color is a huge improvement.

i've been dyeing off and on all week, lol. and you and your "chocolate!" good thing i'm eating some already.

it's very nice, though

Yum! Nuf said.

perfection!

Posted by: christine at May 19, 2006 11:15 AM

I was going to say something about being careful about comparisons to bodily fluids when going from yellow to BROWN, but now I think I'll just agree with the other commenters about how lovely this turned out -- a sort of tortoise-shell effect.

Posted by: Mary at May 20, 2006 12:29 AM

pee,pee...she sounds Isareli to me :-)

Posted by: Orli at May 20, 2006 5:12 PM

oh wait, it just dawned on me as I wrote it...it's an English word also...

Posted by: Orli at May 20, 2006 5:13 PM

I can't imagine that she wouldn't like it- it looks lovely! so rich and dark.
