oma christinechen
The other day, the boys brought flowers over to their Urgroßtante (great great aunt), who lives next door, for her 75th birthday.

Later the local church choir came to sing for her. (They sing a special song during church service for people over 70 every year on their birthday, and once you're 75, they come to your house to serenade you.)

She's the sweetest, spunkiest, and tiniest woman I've ever met. (She used to ride a little moped around the village and since her feet couldn't reach the ground, she had to jump on to get started and jump off to stop!) Look, the boys'll be bigger than her in another year!

She's bought her way into the boys' hearts by always giving them candy.

They don't even know what it's called; for them it will always be Oma Christinechen candy.

Hi Alison! Been reading your blog for a while now. Was inspired and awed by your beautiful knitting projects... And now you're in Germany (just like me) and your kids get the same Fritt's candy that my grandma gave to us when we were kids... I hope you're having a fine time in this hot, hot, HOT country (although today, there's a breeze and some rain... FINALLY!) Take care, Charis :-) PS: Should you be in the Kassel area, drop by! ;-))
You were shopping boy's clothes at h&m - my son (same age as yours) has the very same brown-orange-yellow-white striped shirt and loves his "Weltmeister-t-shirt" so much.
And the candys one of my favorites as long as I can remember. I think they are very special German.
Wow, ist FRITT ein Kau :-))
I love that they came and sang to her. She sounds wonderful! And pretty flowers for her too.
I hope I am half as cute and tiny when I am in my 70s!
It's so awesome that your boys get to have these experiences and see their family in Germany!! One day they'll realize how lucky they are. :)
Wow how cute is that picture of the boys and their spunky great aunt!
Hey that is lovely. I might suggest that to my church. Lovely boys too. Aah... it is all so romantic!
This is just the sweetest post, Alison.
I love the musical tradition.
Lovely!
Awwww....how sweet that your boys brought flowers and how kind of your church to serenade your teeny little aunt!
That's so sweet. Love the part about the moped. Thanks for sharing your travels-enjoyable reading and love the pics.
I love the fact that there are still places in the world where being old is celebrated. There aren't enough of them. She sounds like a real character!
MMMM, Fritt!! Schmeckt gut! The photos are wonderful, they remind me of Elizabeth Zimmermann's Digressions. Danke sehr!
Awww...that picture is adoreable.
