blame it on the hormones

Instead of knitting, I've been looking at Sexiest Man Alive photos all weekend (not of George, mostly Johnny and Jake) and reading celebrity gossip headlines online.

And speaking of The Office's John Krasinski being chosen as one of the sexiest men alive, what was up with Pam in the last episode saying that her mother knit this sweater for her?!

Um, does her mother work in a factory for Anthropologie?

Thank you! I thought maybe I was the only one who scratched my head about that Anthropologie sweater.

Well maybe she had her mother knit her a replica - I doubt she can afford a $268 sweater on a receptionist's salary.

i'm going blind squinting at the computer screen - that doesn't look like the same sweater to me. veryveryvery similar but not exactly the same. machine knit, i'm sure, though. although i'd love the pattern if it existed.

BUT there are differences.. the Original has no button closure, as far as I can see and the braids on hers are being 2smaller" at the top....

Posted by: Bente at November 20, 2006 10:05 AM

Aww, you guys just spoiled it for me. When I heard Pam say her mother knitted that sweater, I smiled and thought, Knitters are taking over the world. My teenage son even caught it and said, Hey.

I suppose next you will be telling me there is no Easter Bunny and that it was really my parents who put the quarter under my pillow. Dang realists.

I was just excited that knitting was mentioned on one of my favorite shows. At least they had her mother knitting her something cool. It could have been an ugly sweater and that would've been no fun.

Posted by: Courtney at November 20, 2006 10:15 AM

Sorry Kmkat, blame it on the hormones, but it kinda irked me that that's being passed out as a handknit garment. Of course, I don't appreciate it when handknits are being portrayed to be ridiculous, ugly items, but come on, this here is just unrealistic. Look at those seams... either a machine knit that or whoever knit it is a machine! ;0)

Posted by: alison at November 20, 2006 10:16 AM

i had the same thoughts as kmkat, but something just seemed a bit off too. the sweater was too... (insert perfect descriptive word here) something not handknit.
i'm thinking her mother knit the cover for the button, sewed it on, and foisted it off as her own handiwork... maybe? :OD

Posted by: staci at November 20, 2006 11:13 AM

Maybe mom did knock it off - I don't think there's an Anthropologie in Scranton, and I seriously doubt Pam could afford it anyway. Maybe it was a wedding gift :-)

Posted by: Melanie at November 20, 2006 11:21 AM

I KNOW! I thought the exact same thing.

Posted by: LeAnne at November 20, 2006 11:31 AM

I was irked too, and kudos for tracking down the doppelganger sweater, but no one has mentioned the even cooler part of the exchange--the new girl says "oh, cool, I've always wanted to learn to knit!" I'll take it!

Posted by: Cirilia at November 20, 2006 12:00 PM

Ahhhhh, Johhny. He's just lovely, isn't he? Have fun looking!

Posted by: Kathy at November 20, 2006 12:17 PM

Well, Pam's mom is pretty cool, IIRC, so maybe she did knock it off (in theory). In reality, the wardrobe folks picked it up and thought they could pass it off.

Posted by: Melissa at November 20, 2006 12:31 PM

Ha! The exchange in my house went like this:
Me: Hey, that's an Anthropolgie sweater
Pam: My mom knit it for me.
Me: Uh, no she didn't, it's in this catalogue right here.
Hub: well, maybe her mom's a great knitter, at least they mentioned knitting on TV and it's not grannies....

Posted by: tara at November 20, 2006 12:42 PM

I'm disappointed that it was so easily identified as an Anthropologie sweater! I had hoped I could cross over knitting and my current TV obsession into a sweater knitalong! It WAS great to hear Karen say she'd always wanted to learn how to knit, though.

Posted by: natalie at November 20, 2006 12:52 PM

Funny, I missed that part about Karen responding about wanting to learn to knit. I must have been talking too loudly about that not being a handknit sweater to hear it! ;0) That is cool. And it's certainly cool that they think highly enough of handknitting to try to pass off a machine-knitted sweater as handknit. Or to put it another way, it's cool that the trend in machine-knitted fashion sweaters is that they look more and more like sweaters handknitters could make.

I almost spit on the computer screen you made me laugh so hard with that Anthropolgie factory remark. Thanks for the bit of cheer on a busy day!

Posted by: Brynne at November 20, 2006 1:55 PM

Well, at least it wasn't dissed like Phyllis' knit gift at the Christmas party last year...

Posted by: Dava at November 20, 2006 2:25 PM

Maybe her Mother is a pathological liar.

Posted by: LoriO at November 20, 2006 2:57 PM

Right Dava, I'd forgotten about the handmade potholder! :D

Posted by: alison at November 20, 2006 3:44 PM

I was wondering about the sweater too!!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught it!

Posted by: Michelle at November 20, 2006 5:14 PM

An NBC chat with Jenna Fischer says

Tara - Did your mother really knit the sweater you were wearing tonight?

Ha! No, not my real mother. In fact, I think they bought it at Anthropologie. They added the big button to make it look homemade.

So Alison's right about which sweater it is!

Posted by: Knitopia at November 20, 2006 5:23 PM

Maybe Pam's mom has been watching that cooking show called Semi Homemade (?), where they add a few elements to store-bought goodies and call it a home cooked meal.

So Pam's mom bought the pricey sweater at Antropologie, personalized it with the button, and voila, it's Semi Handknit. :) At least it wasn't Semi Hideous Ill-Fitting Acrylic!

I stayed up until 3 am reading the Sexiest Man issue. Love me some George. I just know he and I would make a perfect couple. I did notice Pam's sweater on the last Office. And I did think to myself that it looked machine-made. Good catch, Alison!

Posted by: Mary at November 20, 2006 7:10 PM

Well, I just spent way too long drooling over those hot man pics and videos. Thanks! lol I'm just glad my husband wasn't hear to watch me.

Posted by: Angela at November 20, 2006 8:09 PM

I don't think it's the same sweater either. The cables are different, for starters.

Posted by: Katie at November 20, 2006 9:53 PM

Hee hee, well apparently she does. Ack, it doesn't even have that hand-knit sass to it. Sheesh, her mother ought to wash her mouth out with soap.

Posted by: Tracey at November 21, 2006 12:05 AM

omg, did you see the price tag? nice cardi though.

Posted by: Jen at November 21, 2006 4:26 PM

Hey, its fiction dontcha know. The wardrobe budget must be generous!

Posted by: Patricia at November 21, 2006 4:47 PM

It's not the same sweater, but I also doubt it was hand made.

Posted by: Nope at November 21, 2006 7:10 PM

Know that any comments with name calling (or worse) will definitely be deleted.

Uh, I'm not quite sure why some of you have gotten so upset about this. The sweater is extremely similar (same color, same style, same edging, same cable patterns - and a smaller size certainly could account for the smaller cable on the front panels) and the actress said that she heard the costume people got the sweater at some place like Anthropologie, so what is the big deal? I love the office, I love the sweater, I love Pam, Jenna, Anthropologie, all of it, okay?

So here's what I really want to know - what was the point of the 'Pam has a handknit sweater' reference? Was it to contrast her as handknit sweater-small town girl with Karen big(er) city girl? Or was it to give the two women a minute to bond over something feminine like fashion and knitting to set up a later conflict over Jim? What does the handknitting reference really mean? Why put it in there?

Posted by: alison at November 22, 2006 9:13 AM

Ahh, but was the Anthropologie sweater's price reduced because of the miscrossed cable?
