in search of silly socks

So this is what I'm planning on making the boys for Christmas....

I saw this book at Rhinebeck and bought it for a friend. Then for weeks afterwards, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I kept asking myself if I'd really ever make one of these silly creatures and then I thought it'd be great fun to make some for the boys. I ordered the book, showed it to the boys and they really seemed to think it was a cool idea. (They even keep the book in their room now!)

They each picked out a favorite creature in the book and wrote up a little list of the specific characteristics they want their sock monster to have. You probably can't read it all, so I'll tell you that buck teeth and a sticking out tongue are at the top of the list. And three eyes, they have to have three eyes. Of course B wants a yellow monster and S wants a red one, so I'll be on the lookout on my weekend shopping trip for funky red and yellow socks to transform into their monsters. Look for me in the sock aisles of NYC!

Ooooh, what a wonderful Christmas idea! Only... time, time, time! First get the book, which is either an mail order or a trip out of town, then locate the socks. (Not as easy as it sounds in a small Texas town) Then find the time to make them before Christmas? Arrrrggghhh!

Next year?

Those are pretty funny - I'll bet my girls would love them too.

Those sock characters make me laugh! Have fun in NYC--it's cold here today, but Sat and Sun should be good shopping weather.

I bought this book a few months ago and had a great time making some of those creatures, as well as giving them to friends!
I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

being the lucky friend that you gifted this fabulous book to, scout has also picked out the creature she wants. my dilemna is...where do we get the socks?

Those are adorable! And the lists of desirable traits are too cute :) Have fun.

Here I was thinking you were going to knit the socks. Sewing embellishments onto already-knit socks = priceless!

I have that book, but I haven't made any creatures yet . . . maybe I'll have to get on that soon! I can't wait to see what you come up with for the boys.

The title of that book cracks me up. I've looked through it at the store and briefly considered knitting socks instead of using store-bought ones and then put it back on the shelf and thought "maybe later." Can't wait to see your photos.

That is so funny! I currently have this book on hold at the library! I can't wait for it to come in and I can get a good look at it!

The blue one on the front cover is adorable. Love them, and maybe a little pink one will be in order for future use too.

Before my daughter went to college we spent one afternoon making stupid sock creatures. It was a wonderful afternoon and we laughed ourselves silly when she accidentally attached the tail to the front instead of the back. Can you picture it?
By the way - bought the socks at Walmart - they had a great selection - don't buy mens - they stretch when you stuff them and they will be really big!

Those are just too funny, I love them!

That is an amazing christmas idea. I have some twenty-something friends who would absoloutely love those.
I need to get my hands on this book!

I got that book for a friend for Christmas last year. I don't think he made anything with it though. Maybe I'll make something with some of my less well loved (unworn) socks.
