turning over a new leaf

I've got sock pal socks on the needles - woo hoo!

This is "embossed leaves" from Interweave Knits Winter 2005 (also in Favorite Socks). I am so excited to be making these socks finally. I've always wanted to make them because every finished pair I've ever seen was simply stunning. In fact I picked out this green yarn (Lang Fantomas) about a year ago just to make these socks. But it turns out I don't really wear much green and I don't wear lace socks. But my pal does! And after knitting this pattern myself, I may have to change my mind about lace socks.

Besides the lace itself being mesmerizingly lovely, I find the pattern to be surprisingly lovely as well. I don't know how you "memorize" lace patterns, but I've found myself focusing on the mathematical sequence at work here: the one left/two right, down one/up two sort of back and forth movement that builds as the leaves develop. Honestly, it appeals to me as much as the leaves do!

I'm hooked! I'm putting Lace Style on my wish list and going out today to search for the perfect yarn for my own pair of embossed leaves.

Isn't that pattern great? I love doing lace socks, you concentrate on going on row at a time and then before you know it, you're done!

I *think* I am making those for my pal too, (I've done both legs and both heel flaps, still have both feet to do) unless I find something I can't refuse at Mass Sheep & Wool!

Simply gorgeous! Lace knitting can be very hypnotic in its way. You knit, you knit, and all of a sudden there is something absolutely BEAUTIFUL on the needles! I don't wear lace socks either but I'm beginning to change my mind :)

Oh, I love that sockpattern and find your choice of yarn really great!

Oooh, those are pretty! I've had this pattern on my "list" for a while now, and I think you've inspired me to move them up a few notches!

goegeous! And I don't even like green all that much!!
I started mine too, thanks again for all your hard work putting us all together

Alison, it was just a matter of time until you would be hooked. Math and lace, it's just like magic ;-)
Your pal will be delighted, these socks are so pretty!

Oh I love that green!

I'm heading off on a little trip, and just pulled this pattern out last night to bring with me! (Couldn't decide between lace or socks... so I've got both.)

I've just discovered a love for lace socks, too. I tackled Monkey from Knitty for another swap and was amazed by how fun and easy it was. Normally, I don't do well with lace; lace socks seem to be easier.

I just bought the lace style book..it is stunning! I am not much of a shawl girl but there are so many other fantastic projects

Just finished these a few months ago. My favorite socks yet. Just wait until you get to the toe. It's amazing. Really rocks the sock world. ;)

Oh, those are lovely. I've been thinking about making those for a while - I may just have to do that one of these days. Lace Style is lovely - I just got a copy for my birthday - you won't be disappointed!

Great pattern and the color fits well. I like it!

Simply beautiful!

I love that pattern, it's so lovely watching it grow. I hope it may have converted you to lace socks, one day we may see a pair of your own Embossed Leaves.

i'm seriously into these socks. i can't wait to make a pair for myself!

Posted by: jenn at May 15, 2007 1:44 PM

I knitted those for my last sockapalooza pal :-)
I'm spinning the yarn for my new pals socks at the moment - I'll decide on a pattern once I see what the finished yarn looks like.

That's such a great pattern - I knit a pair for my mom last year, and still need a pair for myself. They're not really as hole-y as other lace patterns, so they'd be a good "entry level" lace-sock-wearing experience ;)
Bet the pattern could be used to make some super-adorable booties... if you need more.

Lovely socks! Big news: Amazon.de sent me a mail that "Charmed Knits" has been shipped today!

Posted by: meike at May 15, 2007 2:40 PM

I've had those on my queue since that issue came out. (A year and a half ago already? Really?) I bet yours push me over the edge to cast on!

Posted by: Marlena at May 15, 2007 2:46 PM

hmmmm.... another pair of lace socks to think about!

Posted by: peggy at May 15, 2007 3:06 PM

Yes, I really enjoyed making these socks too. I do not memorize patterns easily at all but this was one of the few.

I was also able to customize the size too (hiding decreases in the pattern) which is a big deal for me. I'm very pattern-centric.

I have one of these done . . . and it has been done for several months now. Sadly, it is missing its mate. That will have to wait until my sock pal is taken care of.

Posted by: Ava at May 15, 2007 3:39 PM

Lovely socks! :)

Posted by: Samantha at May 15, 2007 4:42 PM

I'm in love with that pattern too! I've heard that the ribbing at the top is a bit tight though. I was thinking of using that pattern for my pal as well but then a different lace pattern caught my eye. If I knit every pair I wanted because I fell in love with the pattern my pal would get ten pair of socks! hehe

Posted by: Laura at May 15, 2007 5:12 PM

Your pal is going to be very happy with these!

Embossed Leaves is one of my favorite patterns. I knit two pair while on a twelve day tour of Benelux/Germany last year. Now the pattern also reminds me of that wonderful trip. The pattern was easy enough to remember for travel on planes, trains, AND automobiles!

Posted by: Bobbi at May 15, 2007 8:57 PM

Wonderful... absolutely and without a doubt. That is one lucky pal!

This is a very cool design for the cap- I love the way the baby looks. Little bunny head!
