a zoo out of the blue

Apropos of nothing, the boys decided that I need to knit them stuffed animals. I have no idea how they came up with the idea, but suddenly they were giving me details of how the animals should look as if it were something we'd been planning forever.

S wants a tiger and B wants a bee. Interesting choices, no? I've hunted through my kiddy knitting books and found a bug pattern (from Jess Hutchison's out-of-print Unusual Toys booklet) that'll do for the bee. Now that we have pattern, B keeps saying "can we go to the yarn store?" And I rub my hands together like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons and say, "yeeeees, exxxxcellent."

The tiger pattern is proving harder to find. Anyone have any suggestions for something cute and fun, not too literal, not too complicated?

Don't worry that baby L will be left out of the zoo pals fun. For my birthday, Dani gifted me with some super soft alpaca to make wee one the bunny from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts. Love those little pink ears!

Meanwhile, I treated myself to a little funny animal pattern book for my birthday. I was looking for books for the boys for their birthday and just happened to find myself in the craft section - heh, heh. Once I saw this book I couldn't resist!

Even if it weren't full of crochet amigurumi, which I simply adore, the title alone would have sold me. I mean, Mr. Funky's Super Crochet Wonderful - how can you put that back on the shelf?!

And so I begin to build a zoo: a bee, a tiger, a bunny, and maybe even mr. funky the monkey someday. Next, I'll be making an ark!

Tiger? When I read that the first thought I had was of the stripey mohair cat in Lucinda Guy's Handknits for Kids... You could modify that with more tiger-like stripes? =D

Posted by: Sophy at July 6, 2007 11:13 AM

You could always knit a fairly generic animal shape using opal tiger sock yarn :-)

Posted by: janine at July 6, 2007 11:14 AM

You could use the bee pattern, leave out the middle set of legs, and other buggy goodness, change the yarn to yellow and black, and then do broken/staggered striping on the face.

Or, like the previous poster suggested use Opal tiger yarn.

heres a pattern for Noahs ark including tiger ;) http://www.mothersunion-cov.org.uk/Project%20Ideas%20Noahs%20Ark.htm or you could modify this pattern http://www.rnib.org.uk/xpedio/groups/public/documents/Visugate/public_acnapr92.hcsp?printPage=1#P157_17183 its for a koala but you can use the same body and head with stripes for the tiger and make some triangular ears :) -Mary

Tigers are striped. Bees are striped. Why not take the bee pattern and put ears on it?

Posted by: Chialea at July 6, 2007 11:23 AM

There's a great tiger pattern in Kath Dalmeny's World of Knitted Toys.

Posted by: brooke at July 6, 2007 11:38 AM

Tiger!

There's a cute tiger pattern in Classic Babies:
http://theknittinggarden.com/ro-magclassicbabies.htm
but since it's Rowan it's probably complicated.

Posted by: protagitron at July 6, 2007 11:41 AM

Here is one http://doggedknits.com/?p=65 but she does say it was a pain to knit.

Posted by: Liz at July 6, 2007 12:08 PM

A cat pattern, and tiger striped sock yarn? Wasn't it you who linked to a sock yarn dyer in Boston? Maybe it was Julia at MothHeaven......it seems to me her little boy wanted tiger socks. There's also WHITE tiger yarn - that would be so cool!

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at July 6, 2007 12:22 PM

I totally understand the Mr. Burns thing. The first time my daughter asked to go to the mall my husband just looked at me like "This is all your fault". Now I have two daughters so he should prepare now.

Posted by: Wanett at July 6, 2007 12:24 PM

Also, the free "Kate" patttern on Knitty could easily be adapted to be a bee with the additions of a stinger, wings, and antennae.

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at July 6, 2007 12:26 PM

The only way I'd have kids is if I were guaranteed that they would say things like "let's go to the yarn store." You are one lucky mama!

And HBB!

Posted by: Dava at July 6, 2007 12:31 PM

Kath Dalmeny's World of Knitted Toys has a tiger in it. And just about every other animal you can imagine.

Posted by: Jessica at July 6, 2007 12:50 PM

I'm so glad people have given you tiger leads! I bought a very complicated cat pattern when my daughter asked for a tiger, but I've never finished it. Now I can use one of these easier patterns your readers suggested and turn a UFO into an FO! Thanks!

There is this one from the Victoria and Albert Museum: http://www.vam.ac.uk/images/image/13090-popup.html

Also, are you making a bunny or an elephant for wee one?

Posted by: Ruth at July 6, 2007 2:12 PM

Inquiring minds want to know....what does the word bubble next to the bunny say?

My book doesn't have that :)

Posted by: Libby at July 6, 2007 2:23 PM

Here is a vintage tiger pattern if you want to check it out. www.vam.ac.uk/images/image/13090-popup.html

Posted by: Nicole at July 6, 2007 2:34 PM

I was going to recomend Kath Dalmeny's World of Knitted Toys, but I see someone beat me to it. It's a great book!

Posted by: Helene at July 6, 2007 2:54 PM

One of these three patterns might work. The first two aren't striped, but that could easily be added. The last one is striped already.

What about tweaking the Bobbi Bear pattern?

Posted by: heather at July 6, 2007 2:57 PM

A knitted ark...hmmm, floating it might be a bit of a challenge....Perhaps wool that still has the lanolin in it?

Posted by: Carol at July 6, 2007 3:08 PM

How about this one from the V and A?

Those are boy perfect!

Posted by: Sil at July 6, 2007 3:14 PM

Doh, Ruth, what a dork I am! Of course it's the bunny and not the elephant. Thanks for catching my delusion there!

Posted by: ALISON at July 6, 2007 4:33 PM

Crafty Alien has a cute tabby cat that, with the appropriate colors, could look tiger-like at http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=6317233. There's also a really cute bee: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=6147938

I think I have a tiger pattern. From a Sirdar booklet. When I get home tonight I will hunt it down and give you the title.

Posted by: Laurie at July 6, 2007 5:02 PM

Can't do tiger, but I have a great lion pattern.

Posted by: Asaknitter at July 6, 2007 5:25 PM

Knitting at KNoon patterns offers a completely rad pattern set called Safari friends that has a bunch of cool animals. I know there's a lion for sure, and an elephant and a giraffe. I also know that there is a striped animal, but I can't quite remember whether it's a zebra or a tiger. Either way, it's recommended. I'm also a maniac for that Kath Dalmeny book.

Posted by: xtina at July 6, 2007 7:13 PM

I just thought of the tiger from Rowan Babies book too, and I am sure it wouldnt be too hard for you to knit. I love those baby shoes, just so adorable.

Posted by: Sue at July 6, 2007 7:20 PM

Alison, I knit the V & A knitted tiger--it's really cute, but I'd do it in a DK or even fingering weight--I knit in in worsted and it was GIANT--like a foot long. (The Rowan Babies pattern is very similar).

The Knitting at Knoon striped animal is a zebra--but I bet you could swap white for orange & shorten the face a little--instant tiger!

Hilltop Yarn, one of my favorite LYSs here in Seattle, had a "learn to do stripes without jogs" project that centered around the making of a lovely little tiger. I just called the shop to confirm, and it turns out that they have kits AND just patterns (for the making of fun and funky variations on the theme). You can get their contact information at www.hilltopyarn.com

Happy knitting!

My Nan knits tigers from a jean greenhowe pattern - however, you'd have to buy the book.

Posted by: ginger_nut at July 6, 2007 8:54 PM

I have a pdf for a lion and tiger pattern, but I don't remember where it came from and there is no attribution anywhere on it. I know I downloaded it from some online site, and judging from some of the pattern terms, it is older and maybe British. It might be a little complicated, but no too bad. You could always do Kate, from Knitty, in the right colors - an orange tiger wearing striped pants could be cute.

Posted by: Anne at July 6, 2007 9:23 PM

I have the World of knitted Toys so if you'd like a preview of the tiger club let me know and I'd be glad to send you a photo...P.S. I didn't see if anyone else mentioned this helpful tidbit, but all of the knits in this book are REALLY easy.

Posted by: craft chick at July 6, 2007 9:52 PM

I'm very fond of Alan Dart patterns. I don't know that there's a tiger, but there is a tabby cat!

Opal sock yarn has a tiger colorway. It really looks like tiger stripes! There's enough in a skein that you could probably make a tiger family!

Lucky kids!

Posted by: KnittingPainterWoman at July 7, 2007 3:50 PM

if you all love these animals and know any needlepointers, have them check out the darling zoo creature patterns at Sandy Grossman Designs - unbelievably adorable!

One of the best cat-type stuffed animals I've seen can be found on knitty. Kate: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter05/PATTkate.html
Just make her/him stripey instead of in pants!

Posted by: Jen at July 7, 2007 7:25 PM

I recently bought Charmed Knits - LOVE it, so many great patterns! And just in time for the release of Book 7. However, I have run into a problem with Errol :( I have two of him in progress and need some clarification on the base section. Could you please email me and let me know how/who to contact? Thanks so much!

Posted by: Jennifer at July 8, 2007 12:21 AM

I was going to tell you to check out Knitting at Knoon.
I think (can't quite remember) that is where I got some awesome cat patterns - and a cat could easily become a tiger couldn't it? In fact it already is. :-)

Your boys are so very clever - trip to the yarn store sounds like a cunning plan.

Posted by: Miss Scarlett at July 8, 2007 1:09 AM

hmmm. Tiger. tricky. I have a link I can send you..maybe she'll have something. or you could adapt it.

Posted by: Orli at July 8, 2007 7:49 AM

I just wanted to say I agree w/the folks who suggested Kath Dalmeny's World of Knitted Toys, it's a very cute book, and the animals are very easy to knit. The tiger is one of my favorites!

Posted by: Ang at July 9, 2007 10:16 AM

Haven't read all of your comments, so these may have already been listed, but in case they haven't, here are two tiger patterns:

You could use the bear pattern from Knitted gifts and stripe it up in tiger stripes.

Posted by: Shai at July 10, 2007 4:28 PM

Bernat has a booklet called "Animal Farm" with adorable patterns for a bunny, pig, and seated (!!!) dog and cat. I haven't tried it out yet, but I think the cat pattern might do nicely.
