This is exactly how B wanted the eyes on his sock monster. Almost. I talked him down from twenty eyes to these seven. Then we sat down and played around with how to arrange them and he chose to put them like this all in a circle.
I did a much better job on Jordan after having learned all the construction basics on the first sock monster I made for S. (By the way, S's monster was "Wronky" in the book, but he's decided to call him Gordi.) Once you've made one of these, you can really make any of them. The instructions in the book are so good and so clear and the creatures come out looking so great! The boys couldn't be more thrilled about them. S keeps Gordi with him all the time. Yesterday after school they were hanging out reading the Lego catalog and watching "Dirty Jobs" together.
And now, finally, after a nine month wait (they were supposed to be Christmas gifts, remember?!), I can introduce the sock brothers, Jordan and Gordi. Aren't they a riot?!
PS - Jordan has a little corrective surgery scheduled for later today. After one day (and a half hour of sewing on buttons), B says he thinks Jordan would look better without all those eyes. Uh, yeah. Of course.

stupid sock creatures
They look terrific! Love the argyle effect on the ears and multiple eyes. Nice job.
Well, at least it isn't a request for MORE eyes. A few minutes with a seam ripper and some elective surgery is done. They are pretty cute in a freaky sort of way a young boy could really love. Nice job!
I do believe I'm going to have to get that book. Where did you get those adorable argyles?
Awww but I LIKE all those eyes hehe :P
I saw that book at B&N just this weekend and thought it looked cool, but I don't have much in the way of sewing skills. I love yours, though! And I do like the 7 eyes.
I know, Patricia, I tried to talk him out of all those eyes, but now they've kinda grown on me! It'll be sad to see them go. He thinks that the ears look like eyes, so Jordan will have antennae eyes and will be totally buttonless. He should be getting a name tag though, so he won't feel soooo naked!
Carrie, you should totally make some - they are waaay fun! The argyles were old socks from my mom. Thanks ma! :)
And Emily, I have only very rudimentary sewing skills. I know how to do a straight stitch on my machine and know how to sew on a button. That's it, but it was enough! Really, they're much easier to make than you'd think. All those instructions are very helpful. Think about giving it a try!
I'm sitting here giggling over my coffee. Those are hilarious! I particularly like the way the tongues hanging out make them look like alien roadkill!
Nothing like plastic surgery on your kid's monster ;-)
It turned out too cute for words!
I love Jordan's tongue. It's perfect.
Were those the ears you were having trouble with? Wow from 20 eyes to none.
If Jordan gets surgery does Gordi, too?
That's such a precious picture of S with Gordi.
Nope, no surgery for Gordi.
And yes, those were the ears I was having trouble with! I had to really hold the piece in my hand and fold and turn it in every which way to get what the designer was telling me to do to make them. But once I focused more on his diagram and less on the words, I kinda saw what needed to happen. If anyone has problems with these ear instructions, just ask me! :)
To be honest, the way the argyle pattern works out on Jordans ears, it looks more like eyes on the end of antennae. The 7 buttons look like a nose to me. Very very cute!
Exactly, Beadknitter! That's why B has decided to take the buttons off. He wants the "ears" to be the eyes!
The monsters turned out great!
I am not sure I will show them to my boys though. I am afraid I would have to make them some, too. On the other hand, it might be fun.
Aw, Jordi & Gordi.
These are too cute!!! I'm adding this to the long, long LIST of things you've made that I now want to make.
Yes, buttons on Jordan's 'antennae' would be so cool. But right now, before eye surgery, Jordan kind of looks like the animated monster in "Monty Python's Holy Grail". (I'm guessing the boys haven't seen that -- though my daughters were exposed to it early, minus the naughty bit that comes shortly after the 'knitting exciting underwear' line.)
Hmm; my younger daughter would love a sock monster, being just a bit older than your boys, and liking slightly twisted things and crafty things. And I did get a sewing machine for Christmas last year (which I haven't used yet... oops). Might have to check it out, I love Jordan and Gordi!
So it's Gordi & Jordi? They are so cute - you've sold me on getting this book.
Oh B-man and the indecisions! I love all of the eyes. These guys are so cute, sigh, another book to add to the wish list!
Those are great sock monsters. I love all the thought that went into the eyes.
I actually think the eyes are really cool!
Very cute! They remind me a bit of the uglydolls. Have you seen them?
I love them!! they came out so great. too bad i don't have a sewing machine cause i'd love to make one of those for my little guy. (oh, and i love Dirty Jobs too).
Hey Cambria, the book sort of expects you to actually hand sew all the creatures. He mentions that you can do it on the machine if you prefer and I prefer!! But if you can do some hand-sewing stitches, you can totally make these without a machine. (He even gives you some explanations of the specific stitches!)
It's getting cold, which means your leaf socks will be making a debut very soon!
Also, I just showed Eric, my 24 year old boyfriend what your boys were up to after school and he looked sincerely jealous. I don't know whether it's cute or worrisome!
they are so very cute. the boys are so lucky to have such a wonderful mom like yourself. by the way didn't the boys birthday pass how come there were no pictures like every other year, even last year u mangered to send them from Germany.
I first saw this book somewhere like Crafters Choice and mentally put it on my wishlist. But now that I see your adorable sock creatures, I definitely want the book. What cute monsters you created!
You sock creatures got the seal of approval from my kids yesterday, along with many loud requests to make more at our house.
The monsters are wonderful!
I am making sock puppets for Josie and it is so much fun to try and match her describtions of what she wants. The first one looks a lot like animal from the Muppets!
They are so cute. The sock monsters and the boys. I think I have their triplet living with me. My son is also blond like them and his favorite things are legos, and dirty jobs. He also loves deadliest catch. I love to show him pictures of your boys and legos whenever you post them. At least I have that to share with them since he doesn't want to knit with me. Thanks for sharing. Becky
I agree with B. The moment I laid eyes on Jordon I saw the dark blue patches on the "ears" as eyes and the multiple buttons as a multitude of noses. Maybe if you point out Jordon's super-sleuth sniffing ability B would allow the buttons to stay --- as a funky group of noses?
My late brother's name was Gordon and my son's name is Jordon so Gordi and Jordi sound perfect to me.
What great sock monsters! They can never have too many eyes!!
