mittens, she needs mittens!

It occurred to me as wee one and I were walking the boys to school one morning and the chill was turning her little hands pink that I could knit her some mittens. I should knit her some mittens. It's a little bit embarrassing that she doesn't have any mittens.

I quickly pulled out some leftover Kitpicks Swish and Zoe Mellor's Adorable Knits for Tots and whipped up these stripey little hand warmers. The green will go well with all her wee pink jackets and sweaters. I really like this pattern because the mittens are knit flat (I'm all lazy like that) and the smallest size is knit without a thumb because you can't get babies' thumbs into those thumb holes anyway. Plus, they knit up super fast - I cast on last night after all the kiddos were in bed and all I've got left to do today is seam up the sides and weave in the ends!

So naturally it's going to be 80 degrees today.

I don't know about you, but this whole "Summer in October" thing is both unsettling AND annoying -- I want to work on fall and winter projects, not more string bags!

Elizabeth Zimmerman in Almanac suggests knitting mittens in May because they are lightweight and quick and then you are ready whenever cold weather decides to hit. Great idea, but personally, I am so done with winter things by May!

80s here too. Am I the only one who's sick of hot weatherr? I want cool crisp days. It's October for crissakes! Adorable mittens.

Where is my autumn, I ask? Even in Chicago, it's hovering around 80 midday. I do not like extended summers, nope. Heck, I don't like summer period. Maybe I should move to Toronto, where, according to the Harlot, there are only 56 days of summer a year. I could totally get behind that.

:) i'm afraid my peanut would never keep mittens on!

Come on over to Seattle! It is 40 degrees and raining. We may get a hurricane-type windstorm in the next few days. Nice knitting weather, though. I love the hand-socks. I must make some for next-door neighbor's baby.

More green for the week of green! Yay!
Cute and fast, who could ask for more?
I keep thinking it's going to be the last warm day, and the weather keeps messing with me. I'm ready for fall, but not ready for winter....

Awww, wee mittens for wee one. cute+quick=satisfying

don't forget to make a string to hold them together through her jacket/sweater sleeves - if they fall off, at least they won't get lost. I can't tell you how many gloves/mittens I lost when I lived in Minnesota - and man is it a pain to NOT have them when you're out in the cold!!!

those mittens are awfully darn cute!!!! :D does she have a matching hat?? hehehehe (I'm just enabling more quick and cute baby knitting) ;)

i like the mittens! of course the weather won't cooperate. but if anyone's in the mood for cold, you could always stop by alaska. we breezed through fall already and are working on winter!

Very cute, and I love that there is no thumb. The few times I had to put mittens on baby hands, I ended up hot, sweaty, cranky, and incredibly glad I live in San Diego!

I guess I'm the only one who is glad that you knit mittens and caused us to have this LOVELY 80 degree weather :-) I love it!

The mittens are adorable!

Ah those are so pretty! I'm curious, though. Do babies really keep the mittens on?

Posted by: erica at October 4, 2007 4:30 PM

Adorable!

aw, those are going to be super cute!

Hey, I found this amazing sewn book over on craftzine.com not sure if you've seen it, but it looks like it may be right up your alley (since you've been into the sewing lately) and just had to share: http://community.livejournal.com/craftgrrl/10767794.html

Cute mittens. I remember the days of knitting little mittens for my sons. The main reason to post is to say your email does not work for me, and now, six weeks later, I still have no socks.
Thanks

TK

Haha, that's so funny that they don't bother with the thumb! Guess the little one wouldn't notice anyway.

Hee! Teeny mittens! So CUTE!

Well, I'm happy to have some warm weather - here in London we barely had a summer so I'll take what I can get!

I'm the opposite of you. My knitting laziness leads to a prefernce for circular/multiple double-pointed needles so that i can completely avoid the whole seaming up at the end thing.

Thanks for the inspiration! I was wondering what I was going to do with the leftovers from the baby hat I just finished! This project will be perfect for the freezing weather of Germany!

Now, do you put thumbs on mittens for a 3 yr old or knit them the same as an infant pair? I'll be making up the pattern as I go, so thanks for suggestions :)

I was going to ask, is it that cold? but I should know better by now. I love and I mean LOVE the stripes and choice of color. Yummy.

Posted by: Orli at October 7, 2007 4:47 AM

cute handwarmer! hey, its also warmer for her with the thumb together with her hand!!! greetings from an old german mother ;-)))

Posted by: caroline at October 8, 2007 1:36 AM

too darling. Now I have to cast on for some mittens for my daughter...it's starting to get really chilly here.

By the way you've been tagged. Check out my blog to see the rules. Hope that you don't mind.
