wake up, it's still 5 o'clock

This is cool. We left Iceland at about 5pm and arrived in Boston at the same time. It's a 5 hour flight to America and there's a 5 hour time difference between the two countries. Which all means that it was 5pm for the entire trip. The view out the window was eerily constant - the sunset frozen shortly before sundown, the sky turning dark only as we finally turned to fly south down the eastern coastline of the US. Local time 5 o'clock.

But let's go back to 5pm the night before....

For our last night in Germany, we lit the candles on the tree one last time (yes, the family still uses real candles!) and I finished weaving in the last ends on the in-laws' afghan. I didn't even have to stay up till 5am to get it all done!

Finally done, I could go to bed and get some sleep for the next day's trip. We got the airport in plenty of time, check-in was easy peasy (there's so much less stress when you're flying to Iceland - still in Europe - first!) and the kids had plenty of time to play in Kiddieland before we had to go through security.

The kids waited excitedly for the trip to start.

And once on the plane, wee one enjoyed my book (well, the cover at least) before settling in for a good nap.

But the boys were too entertained by Iceland Air's fun stuff for kids and "How it's Made" on the in-flight entertainment and forgot to sleep. They woke up at 3am this morning and here's how they were at dinner tonight (we had to go out to eat because we haven't had time to buy any food yet).

Wake up, boys, it's only 5 o'clock!

I feel like the boys - but maybe it's too much of my boys (the grands). Or too much holidays - or both. The boys wanted to see The Water Horse so SO & I offered to take them. My son in law is out of town for work this week so we went to their house yesterday & treated everyone to a big lunch at the Pancake Cafe, spent time playing with little sister M & admiring all the neat Christmas presents Santa & the Mississippi relatives got for them. Then we brought them back to our house where they had a snack & played with the toys we keep here for them before bed. Then organic oatmeal with blueberries for breakfast & more play - this time they also played with the Polar Express train set SO bought to keep here for them. Then lunch at the hot dog place & the movie (which was quite good - I love children's movies that treat children as if they have brains & don't talk down to them). Both boys fell asleep on the drive home (about an hour) so I think they were worn out (they may still be tire from their visit to Mississippi). Play with baby M & Chinese takeout followed by sugar cookies baked by Mommy while they were gone. I fell asleep in the car on the way home! I am amazed at the smoothness of you trips to Germany with the children - all those hours on a plane!

welcome back! See you Sunday (if you're awake...)

Hmmm. I guess we could change the name of the song to "It's Five O'Clock Everywhere." I've had days where it seemed to be 7:00 for hours and hours and hours--but that could be because bedtime around here is 8:00.

Wow - real candles. That's cool. The excitement of travel combined with the jetlag thing is hard enough on adults. I can only imagine how it affects young children. How did the baby do? Welcome home.

I predict wee one is going to be a serious scholar - just look at that concentration!

I'm impressed by knowing that you have actually seen time stand still! There are weeks when I wish I could do that, just so I could get everything done. It has been so many years since I've seen real candles on a Christmas tree. That picture brought back lovely memories. Glad you are all home safe!

Welcome home! the afghan is gorgeous, BTW, and oh gosh! candles on a tree...how pretty!

Wishing good sleep to you all...a whole jetlaggged family is no fun...

Gotta love sleeping boys! I'm glad your flight went well and that you made it back on time and safely.

Happy 2008!

Talk about a time warp!
We're all ready for the new year and the old schedule to be back here too.

My family in Germany also uses real candles on the Christmas tree, always has (and the tree never burned!). The candlelight looks so much nicer.

When my Dad lived in New York, he used to have real candles on this tree, too - even though he wasn't allowed to do so.

The picture of your wee one reading your book is just adorable. She looks as if she is really enjoying it.

Welcome back and good luck with the kid's knitting group.
