all buttoned up

I can finally move wee one's bonbon cardigan (from Rowan Classic Mother & Baby) to the finished pile! She waited over a month for the right buttons. After trying buttons in all different colors and with all different designs, in the end, I chose some simple, cheapy pearly buttons. Everything else just detracted from embellishments on the sweater.

All spread out, I find this sweater simply stunning. I love the sleeves, the triangles along the button bands, the embroidered flowers, everything. And the Calmer was a delight to work with again. This is the pure joy of knitting for a little girl!

The sweater is gorgeous! She looks beautiful in it. The button wait was worth it; they're perfect.

Please tell me this is an old cell phone. When my last cell broke down, the provider told me the damage was due to moisture and I needed to buy a new phone. I groused about it never having gotten wet and it was clearly shoddy workmanship. And then my husband reminded me that I'd let our teething 1-year-old drool all over it for months. :)

Oh yes, old cell phone with no service. She LOVES it!

Posted by: ALISON at July 28, 2008 10:05 AM

I wonder who she's trying to call? Daddy at work perhaps? ;-)

Posted by: Lauren at July 28, 2008 10:21 AM

Bearing in mind I strongly dislike pink, I must admit this cardi has come out simply beautiful!!! I love the little embroidered flowers and those decorative triangles :)

Oh, BTW I'm sure tons of people have already asked you, but... when is Sockapalooza 5 starting? Last year's edition was my first time and this year I can't wait to join the paloozers again!! :D

Cheers from Barcelona :)

I love the sweater!

I hope you don't mind, I have an unrelated question for you. I am looking for a very stretchy sock yarn, so I can make something like compression socks. Preferably in a cotton/elastic blend, so they would be comfortable and cool, but very stretchy (to control swelling). It should be a small gauge, maybe 7-9 sts per inch. Can you suggest a yarn like this?

I have been researching on-line, and found a yarn called Socks That Fit Cotton, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. Have you ever heard of it? Or used it?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you might have for a suitable yarn.

BTW, I finally finished my Weasley sweater (made from the Rowan pattern). I was knitting it when one of the HP books was released, then I was actually able to wear it when the next book was released. I think maybe I knit it at the Half-Blood Prince book release party, then wore it at the Deathly Hallows release party, but it might have been Order of the Phoenix & Half-Blood Prince. You were already pretty much finished with the Knit-A-Long when I found your blog, so I didn't really get to participate. But I was able to find a copy of the pattern through your blog, thank you!

I have your book too - love it!

I love, love, love the sweater! Its beautiful and looks even better on Wee one.

How funny that everyone mentions the phone! That was the first thing my son said, "Is she allowed to chew on that cell phone?" lol.

Oh my gosh, she looks so much like her brothers in that last picture! I never noticed it until I saw that angle! So cute! (oh, the sweater is nice too!)

Looks beautiful!

Beautiful sweater on a beautiful baby!!

Absolutely adorable! :)

So sweet!

Those buttons are perfect with the sweater! And Wee One looks great in it.

Posted by: Amy at July 28, 2008 1:15 PM

Not only is it a great sweater but it looks awesome on the Wee One.

Posted by: Gayle at July 28, 2008 1:26 PM

The cardigan is as sweet as the girl inside. I have to second that she absolutely looks like her brothers, I also notice this for the first time today. Did her face change a lot the last weeks or is it just the angle?

Best Wishes to all of you :)

Adorable!

I think that sweater is absolutely darling. Great buttons-and certainly looks like wee one approves! I can't believe how much she looks like your boys....I've been reading your blog a long time and am trying to comment more often. Thanks for being such a regular poster!

That sweater is adorable & looks really cute on Wee One. Baby M has been fascinated by cell phones for several months now also. But she isn't satisfied with a non-working one because it's the beeps that result from pushing the buttons that she likes.

Nancy - if you want something that is really like compression stockings, I doubt you'll find it. Most stretch yarns have 5% or less cotton & compression stockings are largely elastic (at least the ones my old fashioned MD had me wear after my C section were) & are too thick. Crystal Palace makes Panda Cotton which is a bamboo, cotton, elastic blend & pretty stretchy but not really much stretchier than many 100% wool yarns (like Baby Ull). I have used it & it's my favorite hot weather sock yarn. Fixation & its' ilk are pretty stretchy (again no where near compression socks) but thicker than regular sock yarn = sport/DK weight. My "cotton sock yarn" saved search on ebay contained this result: http://tinyurl.com/6d4fhj Kollage Yarn's Luscious yarn 63% cotton & 37% elastic. I've never heard of it before but it looks like the closest you're likely to find to what you're looking for.

Posted by: Donna at July 28, 2008 3:35 PM

Nancy - here is the link to the Kollage website Luscious page: http://www.kollageyarns.com/yarns.php?cid=25 It is 37% elasticized nylon not 37% elastic - I think that means that it is 37% something like wooly nylon. The elasticized nylon is what Panda Cotton contains & this yarn looks very similar but with more cotton & no bamboo. So it'll likely be nice & stretchy but not like compression socks. It has a similar composition * almost identical yardage to the Cotton Panda so I'm guessing it's at the heavy end of the sock/fingering yarn range

Baby & sweater are both sweet!

Posted by: Plain Jane at July 28, 2008 4:40 PM

What a beautiful sweater! I agree that she's looking more like her brothers these days. Must have something to do with the gene pool ;-)

Posted by: Lauren S at July 28, 2008 5:41 PM

So hey if I feel the extreeeeeme urge to knit for a little girl after this.. well I'll just have to send it off to your wee one cause my 'little girl' is now bigger than me.. I might just have to get me a smaller model! hmmm.... er.. maybe not.heh
Beautiful sweater!

Posted by: Denise at July 28, 2008 6:28 PM

Both are adorable--the sweater and the model. The buttons are excellent! =)

Posted by: Lacee at July 28, 2008 7:20 PM

Donna, thank you very much for the comments & suggestions. I was afraid that the cotton-elastic yarns might just be comparable to wool for stretchiness, and yes, I'm looking for something more stretchy. I looked at the Kollage Lucious, and I appreciate the info about it. From what I've read, Lucious is like Fixation only thinner, so it might not be stretchy enough for what I need.

Has anyone tried including an elastic thread when you knit? It sounds like it would be kind of awful, but I want to explore all possibilities.

Posted by: Nancy at July 28, 2008 8:36 PM

Oh my gosh! There it is, in these pictures, that glimpse of how MUCH she looks like her brothers! I knew it would happen because they looked like each other when they were young but she is starting to lose that baby look and her face is coming out. How fun!

Posted by: Laurie at July 28, 2008 9:01 PM

Awwww sooo cute!

Posted by: Jennie at July 28, 2008 10:57 PM

she is getting more and more adorable.. and the sweater
looks fablulous too!

Posted by: jessica at July 28, 2008 11:28 PM

That couldn't be any sweeter. Beautiful work, Alison, and beautiful baby.

Posted by: susan b anderson at July 29, 2008 5:57 AM

Your sweater is beautiful! I love all of the detailing, and your little one looks so sweet in it.

Posted by: Carrie at July 29, 2008 8:20 AM

I can't get over how cute that sweater is, but of course the prettiness and cuteness of your baby girl trumps even the cuteness of the sweater.

So sweet and scrumptious ... like pink ice cream!

Posted by: firefly at July 29, 2008 8:58 AM

This sweater is fantastic and it looks great on your daughter. Definitely an heirloom to pass down through the generations!

Posted by: Teresa at July 29, 2008 11:35 AM

Lovely sweater!

The child will grow up thinking that all kids get fabu sweaters knit by mom. She's so spoiled. ;) And adorable.

Posted by: Lara at July 29, 2008 4:09 PM

The knitters group you are in sounds fascinating. In Australia we have a lot of quilting groups but not so many knitting groups. It sounds like a lot of fun.

I love the little sweater and I know that I should be knitting one, perhaps in blue, for my 10 month old too. Hand knitted always looks so much better than anything else you can buy.

You have inspired me to find some time somewhere. I have forwarded the link to your Harry Potter pattern book to my sister as she loves knitting and loves Harry Potter! Hence the little Harry Potter finger puppets.

Have a great day!
