dolly is a dirty girl

Poor little dolly has gotten soooo dirty. This picture can't even capture how dark and crusty her little face and dress have become. If you look close, right above the neck of her dress you can see something like the original pretty pink her face used to be. Oh, she gross.

"she looks fine to me"

But, I can't get her away from wee one long enough to clean her. (The picture above was taken seconds after I snapped the first photo. "Hey, give me dolly back.") I think wee one and I could actually have a fun time washing dolly together, but my real worry is that she won't be able to wait until dolly is dry to get her back. So, it's looking like I'll have to knit a whole new dolly.

Step one: make dress. Some picot edging and I should be able to take off dolly's old dress and slip this new dress right on her. I'm hoping that if she wears the new dress a while, it'll get some of that nice dolly smell on it that I'm sure wee one is attached to. In the meantime, I can wash the bejesus out of dress number one.

Step two (to come): make new dolly. I should have juuuust enough yarn left over from the first dolly to make a second one. Yes Virginia, you can make two dollys from one ball each of three colors of Classic Elite Bazic.

Dolly is well loved. I remember how hard it was to take Ted (a bear of course) away from my daughter so he could be washed. Good luck.

Oh you are in for it!! I tried to give DD a substitute but identical dolly when she was about wee one's age and she immediately knew the difference and cried until she had the real dolly back. It was a tense day. Good luck!

We thought we were smart when we got a second Tigger so that we could alternate them for our youngest. She figured it out at some point, and now must have TWO Tiggers...no matter how gross they get!

The ultimate compliment is your biggest problem. May I suggest a big day of distractions out of the house without dolly? Is there something, like the aquarium, that dolly would not enjoy?

I'd love to see the Google hits you get for this post!

I used to sneak the kids' stuffed animals and blankies out of their beds for washing while they were sleeping. They usually dry overnight.

I was thinking Dolly had already acquired the requisite soaperatic 'evil twin'. Did I imagine a previous discussion about this? Or perhaps, as at my house, the twin dolly is on the road with other good intentions that require much time? Best wishes for you all during upcoming 'Hurricane Dolly'.

That dolly is absolutely adorable. I love the colors. It looks so friendly. I hope you get it all worked out with your little one. I know how that can go. I have five.

Couldn't Dolly be washed when wee one is asleep at night?

Unfortunately, I can't wash dolly at night because wee one sleeps with her, clutching her. She's an integral part of the whole going to bed ritual. When she wakes up and can't find dolly, she usually ends up crying for us. So, no taking dolly away in the night. Darn!

Super pretty little doll. I can see why your little one doesn't want to part with it. Once I mad the mistake of patching my daughter's "blanky" so I know what your going through.

Best of luck on your mission. I think having two dollies is an excellent plan in any case. It never hurts to have back-up.
