« great seams and little stitches | Main | nikolaus winner! »

december 6, 2008

nikolaus is a potter fan!

Today is Nikolaus in Germany, when German kids wake up to find treats and little gifts in the boots they left out overnight. It's such a nice little pre-Christmas celebration. Along with the advent calendar goodies, the boys have quite a pile of tiny gifties already! I have had so much fun selecting things for the advent calendar so far (I've been tweeting all the advent calendar goodies!). I even had fun jumping in as an emergency Nikolaus, since the package my mother-in-law sends every year, full of German treats, didn't arrive in time. So, inspired by all this fun gift-giving (and also by last week's giant blog Giveaway Day organized by Sew Mama Sew, with over 100 blogs giving away handmade items), I decided to have a little giveaway of my own.

Nikolaus would love to give you a copy of my book, Charmed Knits!

AND he'll also throw in a House Hat hand knitted by me. You choose the House, the style (beret or beanie), and the size, I'll knit it up and Nikolaus will take care of the delivery.

To enter, just leave a comment to this post (try to leave just one comment please - my comment function runs crazy slow, so give it a minute - no exaggeration - to let your comment load). Comment by the end of Sunday and I'll draw a name on Monday! Readers from outside the US are welcome to participate as well (if Nikolaus can get over to America to bring gifties to my German kiddos, he can send a book and hat to wherever you are!).

Good luck and happy Nikolaustag!

UPDATE: I've already selected a winner. You're still welcome to comment, but the giveaway has ended. Thanks for playing along and sharing all your traditions. :)

Yay for German holiday traditions! Both sets of my great grandparent were from Germany.

I was born in Germany, and now live in the states. I miss Nikolaus, and that time in my life very much!

I love all the German traditions that you celebrate and share with us!! My husband is German too, but his family doesn't have the traditions that your does. My son is a big fan of your boys and is enjoying reading about what is in their advent calandar every day!! :)

Hi Alison! I would love a chance to win a House Hat! I already own your book, but if I win, I will donate the extra copy to my knitting guild's library.

I love reading your blog, with all the sewing and knitting around the year. You are a great inspiration! Here in Sweden we don't celebrate the 6th of December especially. Our next great day is Lucia, the 13th.

Merry Christmas!

Oh, St. Nikolaus visited us when we lived in germany when my dad was stationed there when we were young. My brother was a tiny baby then, and he got gummi bears in his little booties.

What a nice way to begin the Christmas season. BTW, Thanks for the idea of the Christmas baby hat a couple of posts back, my friend was looking for something for her new grandbaby. Please enter me in your contest. Thanks, a bunch

WOW! How super generous!

I think this is a tradition we'd love to start here at Chez CornFree. We have friends in Germany that send the kids little gifties all year long, and i could save them and put them in boots!

Posted by: Chris at December 6, 2008 12:07 PM

Although we've never celebrated this special day, my family loves to search for the Christmas Pickle on the tree!!! Its a daily activity during December as everyone takes turns hiding it so others can look for it.

Posted by: Barb at December 6, 2008 12:07 PM

That is a really cool tradition. It gets the kiddies all ready for christmas.

Posted by: qutecowgirl at December 6, 2008 12:08 PM

When I was little, my mother would have us put our shoes outside our bedrooms and she would put oranges and candy in them.

I do wish that we had some cool cultural traditions like that! Most of our traditions are ones that we made up ourselves. It would be neat to have something to celebrate that came from your heritage.
Forgot to tell you earlier that I love your advent calendar!

Posted by: Wendi at December 6, 2008 1:24 PM

I had a friend of Dutch heritage in elementary school who also had St. Nicolaas shoes. His always had a giant chocolate letter of his first initial, a big rectangle of gingerbread with a dutch frieze, and a toy. I was soooooooooo jealous!

Posted by: Karlie at December 6, 2008 1:28 PM

My Dutch dad made sure we had those giant chocolate initials, too!

It's so much fun to do these things with your kids when they're little; now I enjoy reading about your doings on this blog. In our household, we do Christmas AND Hanukah, and Hanukah was the chance to do little surprises for 8 days. No need to put my name on the prize list since I have your book already. This Christmas, Santa is bringing "Beedle the Bard" to my grown-up but still HP addled daughters; it arrived so well wrapped from Amazon that I can't even peek at it beforehand!

Posted by: Mary K. in Rockport at December 6, 2008 1:45 PM

Oh, I would love a copy. What a great tradition! So neat to hear how others celebrate this time of the year.

Posted by: Trish at December 6, 2008 1:52 PM

What a fun tradition - I remember learning about it from our neighbor's German exchange student when I was little.
What a generous giveaway too - sign me up!

Posted by: Kate M at December 6, 2008 1:53 PM

It's also important to remember that if it wasn't for the Prince Consort Albert putting up a tree in Buckingham Palace at Christmas, all of the wonderful traditions we celebrate now in the States would not exist, or if they did, not as widely. Yeah Christmas!!

Oooo--I'd love to get in on that!

Posted by: Suzanne V. (Yarnhog) at December 6, 2008 2:02 PM

What a nice idea! My family always celebrates King's Day, which sounds just like Nikolaus day, but it's on January 5th--the twelfth day after Christmas, and supposedly the day when the three kings left Bethlehem to go home. I think it's a Mexican tradition. Anyway, how nice!

Posted by: Rita at December 6, 2008 2:07 PM

Just yesterday I was talking to my fourth-grade students about Nickolaus day and other holiday traditions which involve presents in shoes instead of in stockings. I laughed to myself when one of my students said that she always gets a new pair of hand-knit socks from her auntie along with another small gift in her shoes on December 6. What could be more magical than new socks?!

Posted by: Tiffanie at December 6, 2008 2:42 PM

Nikolaus never made it to Norway, but I got to meet Sinterklaas when I used to live in the Netherlands :)
"Sinterklaas kapoentje, gooi wat in m'n schoentje..."

Posted by: Helene at December 6, 2008 2:53 PM

You betcha I'd love to win this, even if Nicklaus always skipped us Jewish kids. I've got to hurry up and finish a few more sweater ornaments, too!

Posted by: Gennie at December 6, 2008 2:56 PM

We celebrate Nikolaus too (I lived in Germany for four years as a child) with a twist - our kids leave their letters to Santa in their shoes for St. Nicholas to deliver. They still love this tradition even though they're (gasp) approaching the teen years ... hope your kids enjoyed their goodies.

Posted by: Edith at December 6, 2008 3:00 PM

Happy Nikolaustag!!!

Posted by: Nell at December 6, 2008 3:05 PM

We've celebrated St. Nicholas Day since I was a kid, and I loved introducing the tradition to my kids... My favorite St. Nicholas memory is when my dad got greedy and put out his big boots. St. Nicholas filled it up with sticks and dried leaves!

Posted by: Julie at December 6, 2008 3:18 PM

Oh, such a fun tradition. Here in Finland today is independence day, and everyone gathers around the TV to watch the President's reception, mostly because the guests get to wear pretty gowns. :D

Hi and happy St. Nicolas Day! My boys ususally celebrate at school, but they didn't this year as it fell on a Saturday. I forgot this morning (bad mommy!) so I am just hoping they don't remember. Perhaps I can do it tomorrow. They are 6, they aren't likely to remember if it happened on a Saturday or a Sunday, right?
cheers!

Posted by: Shelagh at December 6, 2008 4:06 PM

Well, of course I already have your wonderful book, but I can probably think of a lucky knitter friend to share a second copy with, should I be so lucky as to win this giveaway. As for the hat, though? No way it's going to anyone but me! I keep so little of what I make and, because I knit, I never receive gifts knit just for me, so I would treasure an Allison original. (Not "treasure" as in "never wear it, 'cause it's just too special." More like "treasure" as in "wear it every chance I get and brag about it to anyone who can't run away fast enough to avoid me." You know.

Posted by: Toni at December 6, 2008 4:09 PM

I'm THRILLED to see that you stuff boots on St. Nick's Day! I never knew about the tradition till moving to Milwaukee, but here "everyone" stuffs stockings for St. Nick's Day. When I did the research, I told my DH that the only way I'd do it was if I could do BOOTS--as the legend reads. ;)

Posted by: Lori at December 6, 2008 4:20 PM

I must be the only person who doesn't own this! Please sign me up, and have a wonder pre-Christmas gift day.

It's getting so close now and I am so excited! You are such an inspiration, it would be such an honor to have a hat made by you! And maybe one day I will be good enough to actually make something from your book, what great motivation! Thanks for the inspiration and this opportunity. Happy Holidays to you and your family! -Michelle

Hi Alison:
Too bad my family didn't keep up our German holiday traditions - I have some pretty large boots to match my size 12 feet - room for lots of treats!! My grandparents were from Bavaria. I would be so thrilled to win a copy of your book and a hand-knit house hat. I enjoy your blog and admire your daily entries. Thanks for sharing your knitting adentures with us!!

My kids started German in Kindergarten so Nikolaustag has been a part of our family for 7 years. We enjoy it.

Posted by: Anne at December 6, 2008 10:44 PM

Happy St Nick to you. I did it as a kid but have not carried the tradition on with my kids. Perhaps next year. I'd go for Harry's house. Maroon and gold all the way!

Posted by: Peggy at December 6, 2008 10:52 PM

I already love and own the book, however I would love to be in the drawing to maybe win the book to give to a new Knitter of a friend.

I have been inspired by your blog for some time and would love to have a handknit from you :-)
In Denmark we don't have the Nikolaus tradition but my Dutch colleague has told about it.

Posted by: Lone at December 7, 2008 2:55 AM

That sounds like a worthy Nikolaus task. I think your book is great and I would dearly love to own it... but the biggest plus would surely be a handknit from your hand!
Happy Nikolaus indeed!

Posted by: Karen S at December 7, 2008 3:03 AM

Dear Alison!

What a nice idea! I live in Germany and my work colleagues have probably left a little chocolate Nikolaus on my desk... Can't wait for that on Monday...

It's so nice that you give your kids the best of both worlds!

My little ones would love this tradition I am marking it on the calendar right now. We are all big Harry Potter fans in this house. We watched a Harry Potter marathon last night until we couldn't keep our eyes open. I would love a copy of your book and a hat for my son (he would be so excited). Thank you for hosting this giveaway you are awsome.

I love seeing you bringing traditions I know into your children lives. We celebrated Nikolaus yesterday too, my children enjoy it very much :)

Many greetings from Germany,
Beate

Posted by: Beate at December 7, 2008 9:13 AM

I love hearing about other traditions for the holidays - in blending our families asian and european backgrounds, we find ourselves casting a WIDE net to incorporate celebrations from almost everywhere!

Posted by: linda at December 7, 2008 9:23 AM

Ho ho ho! Thanks for making someone's holiday Merry.

Posted by: Rebecca at December 7, 2008 9:23 AM

I never knew our neighbours (I'm in/from the Netherlands) had this Nikolaus-tradition! I think it is much like Sinterklaas. In Belgium it is celebrated like you describe, overhere it evolved into getting small gifts in the shoes a few times before "Pakjesavond" at the 5th of december. At "Pakjesavond" (evening of presents) we get lots of gifts. In our family the tradition is to give every member of the family a small gift with a little poem teasing the receiver about the past year of hinting about the package. It's so much fun!

Posted by: Geertrude at December 7, 2008 9:25 AM

This is the first St. Nicholas in years that I have not filled shoes for someone. It would be lovely to have *my* shoes filled instead.

Posted by: hali at December 7, 2008 11:37 AM

In Mexico we have a similar tradition. On Jan 6 we celebrate "dia de Reyes" or three wise men day, kids find small gifts in their shoes and we all eat "rosca de reyes", which has a small baby tucked inside, whoever gets the baby has to make a party on Feb 2
Thanks for the giveaway!

Posted by: Adina at December 7, 2008 12:04 PM

What a wonderful tradition. We didn't have this growing up so alas neither do my kids. We do put up stockings and the kids get a dvd, cd (or Itunes card), candy, and some lottery tickets every year. I guess that would be our tradition.

Posted by: jaci at December 7, 2008 12:20 PM

Hey! We do Dia de Reyes at my house too-just to teach the small one about his Latino side! This just is too awesome-the same thing with different names in all sorts of countries!

I do own this book and actually am have an "Invisibility Shawl" WIP! However, I'd love the chance to win the hat. My DD is becoming quite an accomplished knitter and I would gift this book to her if I am chosen.

Love your blog! I loved to sew pretty little things for my 24 year old DD when she was a "wee one". Have you ever tried English Hand Smocking? (Yeah, cuz you so need "another cookie to love", don't you?) Your Wee One would be so cute in a sweet little handsmocked Bishop dress.

Have a Great Day!

I just went out and bought the 2 books you reviewed the other day - the Amy Butler for my sister, who is expecting her first baby soon and is an accomplished sewer, and Seams to Me for myself, because I think all the detailed info about sewing basics will be a big help to me, a not-so-accomplished sewer. :) Thanks for the great reviews. I am always up for more books, so count me in for the drawing. And a house hat, too, what a great contest!

Posted by: ashley at December 7, 2008 7:54 PM

I always thought St Nikolaus day was fun. I grew up in a city with many families of Dutch origin, so it was celebrated there too :) In our neighborhood someone actually came around dressed as St Nick and gave treats to the kids! Ahh, fond memories. Glad you're having fun this holiday season with your kiddos!

Posted by: Elizabeth at December 7, 2008 7:55 PM

Oh, me too! Just what I need for more inspiration! I used to celebrate the feast day of St. Nicholas with my own children with candy and small treats. Now I look forward to seeing them continue with my grands. Life is good.

Harry Potter and knitting, those two things go hand in hand. I've just started book three and am hooked already! My Dad lived in Amsterdam for a few years and brought home the tradition of putting out traditional wooden clogs on Dec 5th to be filled by Sinter Klaaus while we were sleeping.

I would love a chance to win a copy of your book and a house hat! We celebrate this little holiday too, although we usually call it St. Nicholas day, and we don't always remember to celebrate it on the right date. Oh, well. Our son is too young to notice our inconsistency, and he sure likes the little gifties.

Posted by: Minneapolismama at December 7, 2008 11:44 PM

It's still Sunday here in the Midwest...hope that counts, I just saw this post! (Busy weekend.) I was thinking yesterday that it was the Feast of St. Nicholas....

Thank you, or thank Nikolaus for being so generous! I lived in Germany for several years when I was young. I remember the tradition. (Also the Feast of the Children or whatever that was called in German ... all very civilized, if you're a child!)

I loved the tradition. Polish but then again Germany and Poland have been switching around bordes for centuries.:)

Posted by: erin B at December 8, 2008 10:53 AM

I'm half-German in the way that all four of my dad's grandparents came to the States from Germany, and married each other, and then their offspring married only first-generation German-americans, and then my dad married my mom and tainted the bloodlines, haha. And yet somehow, all these charming German traditions never happened in our family. I don't know why, and it's a shame.
