yeah, ba-by

After all the stress of working on bugly, I went back to the relative ease of the minimono for a bit. I finished the second sleeve and seamed up the side and arm seams. Now I only have to make little I-cords for ties and do some sort of neck edging (forgotten what the pattern calls for).

I'm pretty sure that I want to make matching booties. And I can't get Sarah's idea about a coordinating diaper cover out of my head. Anyone know a good pattern for such a thing? I think this could be such a cute item of clothing for a baby born in the summer. But maybe not in chenille. Suggestions?

Alison, there is a free pattern out there that doesn't fit over actual diapers very well. I was disappointed to say the least. I will be purchasing this pattern soon, but probably not soon enough to give you feed back. target="new">http://www.littleturtleknits.com/

I'd try for a coordinating cotton print. You could even make some hankies from the scraps -- or a little drawstring gift bag. Many of the baby patterns sold by the majors have a basic elastic-waist & legs bottom as part of the package, and you can sew 'em up in no time.

Oh, and don't forget to wash & dry the fabric before you cut, for shrinkage -- they taught you that in class, right?

Well, I can't take all the credit - I was "inspired" by a discussion on an e-mail list about cloth diapers and knitting your own soakers. I haven't done it, but I'm pretty sure that little turtle knits pattern was the one that was highly recommended. HTH!

Here's Aimee's finished soaker: http://www.hippycrites.com/knitting/archives/001330.html#001330
Chenille would obviously make a "decorative" soaker, rather than the real thing. Or you could sew one up - there are lots of patterns for that, too.

I have an old Minnowknits single pattern with a diaper cover, called "Swing set" #161 -- see it at http://www.minnowknits.com/swingset.htm The cover has elastic around the legs (good) but it just buttons at the waist, so I don't know if it would really stay on an active crawler. It's not in any of the books that I've seen.

Needless to say I haven't made it -- one of the many that I bought but never had time to make before my daughter outgrew them. (The pattern, that is, not diapers, yet. Soon, maybe. I live in hope.)

Seems to me a fuzzy sweater like the minimono really needs little pants or leggings, though.

Wow, thanks everyone for your ideas! The little turtle knits pattern looks cute (so do their booties!) and I actually have Minnies, which has the Swing Set pattern in it (I'd forgotten there was a diaper cover in that book!). And now I'm also excited about the other great ideas, like knitting some pants which could actually be worn with the sweater, or sewing a little diaper cover. I can't decide!

I've made both the Born to Love and the Little Turtle Knits soakers. I really like the Little Turtle because it's so cute and the pattern is nice. It's designed to fit over a cloth diaper, but I bet it would fit over other diapers.
