sew long?

I'm thinking that I'm not sewing or blogging about sewing enough to warrant keeping my separate little sewing blog, sew blue. I would like to keep posting about my projects and progress, though. Would you all still visit if I posted a weekly update on my sewing in my knitting blog?? Pretty please?

Sure, I will.

There is something quite fundamentally different about sewing and knitting, which makes blogging very successful for knitting and not so much for sewing. I have not seen many sewing bloggers.

On the other hand, there are great sites where all kinds of patterns are reviewed, not just Vogue/Butterick/Simplicity/McCall, together with technical sections and shop reviews. They are http://www.patternreview.com/index.pl
and
http://www.patternshowcase.com/

Sure! I've learned more about knitting since you set up this blog than ever before, and I'll continue to track the knitting blog.

May, why do you think sewing is less amenable to blogging than knitting? The complexity of projects? My personal theory would be that more young people (more likely to feel comfortable with computers and to blog) pick up knitting because the equipment is very simple, and doesn't require as much space of its own as a sewing machine and a fabric stash. If that's true then assuming that more and more people blog in the coming years, I expect the diversity of demographics of bloggers to increase and consequently also the number of sewing blogs. But if it's something fundamental about the process of sewing, then that won't be true...

Hey Alison - I actually never quite got why you decided you needed a separate blog for the sewing but I read both anyway and am always interested in what you're making so I'd just like you to put the sewing stuff somewhere rather than nowhere at all! So, sure, put the stuff on the knitting page if you'd like - just don't stop talking about/showing your sewing all together.

Eli,

My theory, for what is worth, is that knitting is more sociable & potable and easier to pick up, while sewing is sort of anti-social: i.e. I cannot do sewing when kids are running around and cannot imagine doing sewing while sitting down with guests!! Not portable at all and require a chunk of time to start with (this is the case at least for me). While knitting, my thoughts wonder around, like, what are my friends doing, etc.

I am not against sewing blogs at all. I love to know what others are working on. I check your site from time to time as well. You may be right that as more younger generation gets involved in sewing there could be more sewing sites. In terms of cost, basic sewing machines are so affordable now. You just need to come up with a chunk of fund initially, but that will be it, while knitting can require needles of this size and that length and so on, anc can easily add up to a couple of 100's. Look at the cost of yarns vs. fabrics.

Ooops, it is getting too long.
Bye!

I am so embarrassed with my last comments. I am so incomprehensible.

Let me try again. Seemingly, sewing is a more difficult hobby to take up due to its initial high cost of purchasing a sewing machine. But, it is not that much more expensive a hobby than knitting: 2 yards of good fabric, say $10/yd (this would be a really good fabric for my standard, btw), can be made into a jacket, a pair of pants, or a dress. So, cost should not be the reason for the lack of popularity among younger people. Also, I read somewhere that most towns are now offering sewing classes, these days and younger people are indeed sewing.

I enjoy reading about your sewing very much. It doesn't matter to me where I read it.

I read your sewing blog. I will admit it was easier to do it when it was where your "tank girls" stuff is on your knitting blog. I wonder if you ever finished your dress or the pajamas. Haven't seen them mentioned in a long time. Have you made more quick pants or fast pants for the boys?

Thanks for your comments everyone. I'm glad to hear that some people are out there reading! I initially separated the blogs because I wasn't sure that knitters would want to hear about my sewing or that seamstresses would like to hear about ALL my knitting. But after your comments it sounds like bringing them back together should be fine. I think I'll debut a regular Sunday sewing update over on the knitting blog this weekend. It will fall down the page a bit as the week goes on, but should be there the whole week so you can find it whenever you stop by. Thanks for reading and for your always helpful and supportive comments.

I post updates on all my projects (even the long forgotten dressy and groovy) on Sunday!
