knitalongers do it in groups

Hey Carolyn, Morgan, MKaye, AlisonG, Leigh, Anita, and Kim, did ya start yesterday? Okay, I know that Anita started already - any pics to share with us?

I started! Following Carolyn's suggestion to give that Becky fave, the tubular cast on, a try, I sat down during the boys' naptime in front of my little portable tv (vintage 1978!), turned on the French Open, opened up the Wiseman book (have you bought this book yet?) and went to it.

Check out those knobs on the tv - yes, folks that's a UHF dial! Uh, back to the knitting. So it took like forever, at least a set of the Agassi match (that's baseline tennis, people). But finally... voila, tubular cast on. Just like the picture too.

Oh yeah and then I went to knitting group and hung out with Kerstin and Sandy. And all the Smooch gals were there too, including our leader at the moment (wait, this wasn't a race, was it?) Johanna, who has completed the back (the top is on a stitch holder) and is just starting the eyelets around the neck on the front. Looks like we could have a finished Smooch next weekend! My Smooch is not so far along, only up to the armholes on the back, but I'm liking it a lot. I'm afraid to go too fast, since that will be the end of my all seasons cotton kick. Unless someone out there can give me permission to make this.

So, how are your knitalongs coming along?

I officially grant you permission to proceed with the cardigan. :) Hopefully I will do the cast-on tonight...

I don't know, Alison. Cardigan or boys' summer sweaters? It's all becoming clearer in the light of day. You were actually asking permission last night to get OUT of knitting the boys' sweaters. Uh huh. Gig's up. I really like that stripey sweater you were wearing last night. Time to go check your archives for more info. (Like today's post title. *teehee*)

I was sitting in front of the tv last night with the wiseman book open to the very same page. Imagine that. :-) I had to do the tubular cast on 2 times! The first time I didn't use a diff colored yarn for the crochet part and then ended up picking up the wrong purl bar. Imagine what I thought when I pulled out the string of crochet and the whole thing unraveled. ah!

What shade of blue cotton glace are you using there? Very pretty

I've started too! My Falaise arrived from Becky on Friday, just in time to start swatching. I don't have the Wiseman book so I had to rely on the Web (http://flor.trix.net/tips2.htm) for help with the tubular cast-on. It came out a bit thick at the edge but looks just fine. I'm in the process of switching web hosts, so I'm not posting at gresik.ca at the moment (okay, haven't posted there since April!) but I hope to have my new knitblog operational in the next week or so, so I can post update pictures!

ummm....I'm really bored of the moss stitch on Able, and since I'm all hot to do Pagan, why not knit the cardigan along with you (I should have it done by the time you have made yours and the boy's sweaters!). Does it have a hood, or is that a shawl collar?
Let's hear it for instant replays!

Hi! what color's your Smooch? Is it the same as in the pattern photo? The color I've got coming, which I think is called Symphony, is also a medium blue. Glad you're feeling better!

Posted by: Maggi at June 2, 2003 9:10 AM

love the ASC blanket coat. i want to make that one too, but not for a while yet. can't wait to see yours!

Posted by: deb at June 2, 2003 9:27 AM

Ok, shady lady. I'm holding you responsible for my current sickness. I just ordered 14 balls of Regia 6-ply in a pretty jacquard colorway. Supposed to knit up to look like a fair isle. What can I say? It's a discontinued color and it was on sale. Justification complete. Blame on you.

Posted by: Kerstin at June 2, 2003 9:49 AM

Hey everyone! Glad to hear that some of you have also started your Becky sweaters. I'm using Rowan's cotton glace instead of the Falaise. The lower part is hyacinth (I told you I was all about the purple this summer!). You'll have to wait and see what the other colors are!

About the blanket coat, I keep wanting to make it because every morning when I've woken up and thought, cool, sun, I'll wear one of my tanks, it's been too dang cold and I don't have anything like a nice summer cardigan to pull over said tanks. Now, about the boys' sweaters. I should be starting some short-sleeved sweaters for the boys, but just can't get motivated for them. And I keep thinking real summer will be here any day now and they're not going to wear a knit top then, right?

Smooches are looking great all around! Mine is in a sort of slate blue and is called Symphony. So, Maggi, I guess we'll have matching tanks!

Permission granted. Great tanks going on. Now I need to do a Smooch!

Hello fellow "Becky's" striped sweater knitalongerssss. I have started my sweater in my mind . I am awaiting the arrival of my yarn from Becky. Isn't she the best!!! I didn't get my order in in time so I will begin as soon as it arrives. But, good luck all. I will follow along each day. I am finishing up the calmer "cloud" cardigan from the Rowan Calmer booklet. Only have half of the fronts left (I knit them both at the same time). Then it is sew-together and make the eyelet edging. Must finish fast as daughter is leaving for the summer and wants to take it with her!!!! I love deadlines.

I haven't actually started my tank yet, am doing the Cabin Fever tank, but need to get my little hands on a pair of bamboo size 4 knitting needles before I can start since size 5 was too loose..may swatch size 3...not sure yet! :)

Where's a good place to get Phildar patterns & are they in English? Is Smooch a Phildar pattern or rowan?

Is Pagan the purple tank? I'm starting to get ideas for designing my own since Personal Threads is having a sale on some cotton yarn that I may want to get..

Alison, would you be offended if I asked you soem questions about your version of sweetness?

Posted by: Janine at June 2, 2003 4:09 PM

hmmmm.... has the discrepancy between the Smooch lace pattern as charted and as pictured in the Rowan book been discussed and I missed it??? I had the lace completed when I realized the chart was incorrect and ripped out to start over. Bummer.

Posted by: Anne at June 2, 2003 5:58 PM

Jessica, I've bought Phildar magazines in english from this online store before (www.knitntyme.com) and you can get the most recent ones in french directly from Phildar at www.phildar.com. The Smooch pattern is from Rowan in their book called All Seasons Cotton Collection.

Janine, go ahead with your questions. I hope I can be of some help. I did answer some questions about the sleeves in a comment a few days ago. Check out the last comment on the last entry in the tank girl two/sweetness archives.

Anne, no one has noticed or mentioned anything about the chart not matching the picture. Could you be more specific about the discrepancy that you found? Thanks!

Posted by: alison at June 2, 2003 7:06 PM

Regarding the difference between the Smooch chart and picture... when I knit following the chart, each V of the lace has a very clearly visible single stitch decrease line up the outside. Not as pictured at all. When I switch the decreases..ie do the K2tog in place of the sl1,K1,psso, and vice versa, i get a "smoother" look like what is pictured in the book. It probably really doesn't matter... I just like the smoother look and wondered if anyone else had noticed this. Loving my first time (but surely not the last) using the All Seasons Cotton!

Posted by: Anne at June 2, 2003 7:28 PM

I really hate to ask this, but I've looked everywhere. Which Phildar book has the striped "Becky" sweater?--think we can get Phildar to rename it in her honor? The Phildar site seems to only show the most recent books and I haven't been able to find it by pattern number, either.

Your tanks look great! The neck on my Pagan stopped rolling after blocking, btw.

Thanks a bunch!
Sharon

Hey Anne, thanks for clarifying. I was hoping you weren't going to point out that there's a way to make that line go away. I'm forever not putting enough work into choosing my increases and decreases and pay for it every time. I actually liked the look of the lines below the V's, but I hadn't compared it to the original. But now you've got me thinking. Hmmmmmm......

By the way, are you knitting along with us? Should I put your name on our list and do you have any progress pics you care to share?

Posted by: alison at June 2, 2003 7:36 PM

Alison if you switch the decreases they do almost go away....

Yes please do add my name... I'll see what I can do about a progress picture (showing my altenative decreases!) tomorrow.

Alison: whatever you do, don't be in a hurry for your twins to grow up!

Thanks for the info about Phildar magazines, etc... is the purple tank the Pagan pattern?

Ah, tubular cast-on, how I love thee. What a lovely job you did, Alison! And one thing I love about the Wiseman book is that it shows the stockinette stitch tubular cast-on, which is the one I use. It's really time-consuming but oh la la! The edge never stretches or loses its elasticity, and it looks professional, to boot.

Posted by: Becky at June 3, 2003 4:46 AM

i tried a new cast-on method too..kitchener stitch. is that the same as tubular? looks similar...
