warning: chickie is armed

Chickie's almost done! I've just got the crazy garter stitch 'sew as you go' (their instructions) button bands/shawl collar. Never done a button band like that - should be interesting. Speaking of buttons, the boys and I made it out to the Button Box in Needham, MA (and the neighboring playground and ice cream shop!). I found some toggle buttons I liked. Then later at my LYS, I was drawn to some pretty orange leaf buttons (I almost used these on the boys' giraffe jackets!). And then I found some neat flower buttons in my own stash. So which do you like best??

I think I like the last best, but I've only got two of them. Darn.

And look what the boys got to take home from The Button Box. Loose buttons for 50 cents a scoop! Fun!

Oh, I love the last button too! What if you mixed and matched different buttons down the front? Thanks for the info on the Button Box--I'll check it out.

That last button is cute! But the leaf would look great, too. Chickie has a nice shape to it. Lookin' good, even without a hood! (It rhymes.)

Well, I like the flower one, but I think my favorite is the leaf one. I like the orange-y color on the yellow background of chickie. The toggle is cool, but it hides on the yellow background. The black on the flower one stands out nicely, but could you find more to round out the set? Anyway, after all that, leafy button is the way to go, IMHO. ;) Chickie is looking good.

I'm loving the leaf button, I think it will be perfect on this cardie.

Posted by: Sharlyn at March 6, 2004 10:33 AM

I'd go for the leaf button as well.

another vote for the leaf.

I like the leaf button, too. Nice sweater.

Since I'm a rebel and not afraid to stand alone, I vote for the toggle. It's subtle. But maybe subtle's not what you want?

Oh, it's so pretty! I like the leaf button, probably because last time I knit something that shade of yellow I used a leaf button a lot like that one. :-)
What pattern is chickie anyway?

Posted by: Sarah Elizabeth at March 6, 2004 11:35 AM

Another rebel here. I really like the toggle best.

Posted by: Stephanie at March 6, 2004 11:48 AM

I'm with Peggy. Use the toggle if you are looking for something stylish, yet doesn't take attention away from the sweater.

But if you chose the leaf button, it would look great too, while showcasing the button more, especially since the sweater is mostly stockinette.

That said, either would look SUPER!!

I like the toggle button the best because it blends in nicely with the sweater. My second choice is the last button because the black and the yellow contrast very nicely on the sweater.

go with the leaf!

Posted by: vanessa at March 6, 2004 1:33 PM

LEAF !!! :0)
The toggle is,I think, too subtle, the flower a little too strong. The leaf is nice and tasteful, and tones in beautifully with the yarn...that's all assuming that my monitor is true.
You did ask !

Posted by: Emma at March 6, 2004 1:54 PM

The last one is my favorite. Leaf is second choice.

I responded to your question in my comments re: the central part of the log cabin square is 4 x 4 inches. Have you checked out the MDK tutorial?

Hi Alison,

I like the shape of the toggle button, but maybe in darker wood. The last button is very nice--hope you can find more if you decide to go with that one.

On another note, the yarn store near me leaves buttons out in these little lucite cases, at toddler level no less! So, it's always a bit crazy tearing my kids away from the button boxes. They go nuts for buttons! I do admit to rewarding them with a button or two before we go in the store: "If you are quiet and listen to mommy, you may pick one button." Makes us all happy.

PS--chickie looks wonderful

Hi! I've never commented before, but I've been happily following your yarn adventures for awhile now. I just wanted to pipe in and vote for the third button...it's gorgeous and so unique! (Although the other two are also splendid.)

Posted by: Sarah C. at March 6, 2004 6:16 PM

Hey! Chickie is absolutely gorgeous! Love it! I think number 2 is great!
Button it!

Wow, thanks for the responses! I like all three of the buttons and am so conflicted about which to use. I really do only have two of the last one and no hope of finding more, so I guess that one's not possible. You all seem to be leaning towards the leaf button so I think I'll start by sewing one of those on as soon as I finish the button band. Then I'll decide if it's a keeper or if I want more subtle toggles.

Thanks again for the help! Chickie should be done next week. Buttons and all!

I love your Chickie cardigan so far...I looked at your WIP page...is 'Nevis' from the Rowan book you mentioned the pattern for Chickie? Stupid question, maybe, but since you've been calling it Chickie, I just wanted to make sure before I shell out for the book. ;)

Posted by: Maggie at March 7, 2004 11:35 AM

my vote is for the leaf button
the last one is my least favorite only because I think the buttons will take away from the beauty of the sweater

Posted by: joy at March 7, 2004 9:09 PM

I like the leaf button best also. I'd like to know who made them. Very pretty.

Posted by: Elizabeth` at March 8, 2004 1:16 PM

I like the flower button best, but the leaf button is a close second...and since you don't have enough flowers, I say go with the leaves. I don't care for the toggle button in this instance, although toggles are lovely things and I always like to finger them if they're on something I'm wearing.
