vintage knits
Melanie, who in addition to being an amazing artist (really, go see her stuff on her blog!), is so generous that she sent me these incredible vintage knitting magazines.

Totally 40's! I couldn't even imagine knitting this suit dress - at a gauge of 7 st./in. Look at her waist - no wonder they had to wear these! Check out the sweet dress on this little, bottle-fed cutie. I do love this jacket though. Unfortunately, you need(ed) to send away for the pattern. It would be fun trying to redesign it, wouldn't it?
It seems that some things haven't changed even in fifty-five years. We're still buying Susan Bates' needles.

And we still block our knits the same way.

In our heels and pearls. Right, Melly? Ha ha!

After seeing your Sophie bag collection, especially with the new closures, I want to make one. I have never tried Cascade 220 -- Sophie would be a good excuse to try it. I'll keep an eye out for magnetic closures.
Funny! When I got those magazines I had to share. Some of the items in there just cry out for an updated version! Seeing as you are such a fearless knitting maven, I think those magazines needed to be in your hands, rather than mine.
Hey! I do block in heels and pearls.
(Okay, I'm kidding.)
Vintage mags are among my favorite things in the whole world, really they are. I just love looking at how the knits are styled and presented. It's also fun to see what people were knitting back then; what's changed and what hasn't...
I adore vintage knittting & crochet magazines, I have quite a few that were my Grandmother's, there is one with an infant sweater pattern she has marked with my name.
Oh, that could be a picture of me! Pearls, heels, hair fixed JUST SO, apron, dress, and kneeling on the floor! Of course, while the man of the house is out. Wouldn't want to get in his way, as the little woman should!
hahahahahahahhahahha, oh, how funny!
I love the look of anything from that era! I think I should have been born in the heel and pearl time!
:)
Fabulous! I love these. Puhlease figure out that jacket.
Just wanted to get back to you on my experience with the snaps. I followed the instructions on Hello Knitty.com for both lining the bag and putting in the snaps and I am very pleased with the result. I like the look of a lined bag.
The snaps I bought are Dritz, 1/2". My husband had
to put the prongs through the fabric for me and he
had to use pliers to bend the prongs down after I
put them through the plastic canvas. They were too
heavy to bend by hand.
The plastic canvas is a great idea. It gives extra support to the area where the shaps are
inserted.
I hope this is helpful to you!
Seriously Alison, this is Emy de-lurking. Your blog has to be one of my faves. I really admire your persistence in blogging so regularly.
And I love those vintage patterns. I haven't got access to these as I am in Singapore but i have managed to source for some online to be mailed all the way from US to Asia!
Would you be so kind to upscale that jacket pattern? I really love the look of it. And the suit dress too. It's something i could see myself knitting and wearing too :)
I have a thick stack of vintage knitting magazines and leaflets from the 30's through the 70's and I'm amazed at how *small* the LARGEST sizes are! (And I do my blocking in my pearls -yes, I really do wear pearls all summer - they make anything dressy- and my Birkenstocks.)
Wish I had access to some vintage knitting patterns. Decent knitting books / mags (besides the Japanese ones) are rather hard to come by as it is (in Malaysia). Anyway, lots of Asian women wear girdles and they sell like hotcakes here. I should know as my mum wears them :o) Dunno how women breathe in those things but technology has improved and the materials used are supposed to be very comfy.
