Check out the reads section. Yup, I've gone to the other side. You should join me!

Welcome to the "other" side!
I have been there before and then swapped to the "knit" side.
great article! I was terrified of crochet after trying to learn from internet video (the way I learned to knit) but I taught myself from a book last week and I was really happy with the result. I have to say I had a very sore yarn finger on the left hand by the end of an hour or so's work, which I don't get with knitting (and I hold the yarn exactly the same way for both).
Welcome to the other side. :o) Great article, I enjoyed reading it.
Is the hat for you or the boys??? Tks for keeping your site ever so interesting and encouraging! You go Girl!
Leslie
I can't go back, don't know why, just can't. Unless YOU start writing up some *way* cool crochet patterns. :) You would've enjoyed the "freeform" crochet class I took a couple years ago. Basically starting with a circle, then adding different yarns (emphasis on variety of color and texture) and changing direction whenever you see fit. I could see you taking that concept and running with it. Very nice article, A!
No.
But I'll gladly watch you!
Thanks everyone!
Jo, I know what you're talking about. Maybe as beginning crocheters we need to hold the yarn real tight to make the loops?
Kerstin, not even to make a fabby basket to display all your fabby yarns (and roving!)?
Ha, Claudia, you crack me up!
Leslie, are you asking about the foxy beret? It's for me. I hadn't thought about it, but the boys would look mega-cute in little berets! What do you all think??
Great article Alison!
Like Jackie, I came to knitting from the "other" side, and like Kerstin, don't know if I want to go back, but you never know.
Fact: My mother taught me the basics of crochet when I was about 8, and I crocheted an entire cardigan [hey, it was the 70s] for my Curious George plush doll.
Hey former crochet gals, at least you aren't frightened off of patterns by having to do crochet edges! Did you notice that there are some lovely crocheted cardigans in the latest rowan mag. I didn't realize they were crochet until I perused the instructions. That's not your grandma's crochet cardi! And how do you feel about some of the newer patterns that combine crochet sections with knitted sections?
OK, you've got me convinced. i recently realized that i did learn to crochet as a child ( i can only vaguely remember sitting on the veranda with my mom and some yellow yarn), but it has all seemed so far away...until now. :-) our nyc knit out (and crochet) is tomorrow, i'll try to snag a free lesson!
great article!
Hi! This is really funny! As you can see in my blog, I've just learned to crochet this weekend, and when I come home, at read your blog - you've posted about crochet too! Strange world... ;)
Actually I was inspired to learn to crochet when you posted the Turkish slippers... they are so cool!
Elisabeth
nope...nope, nope, nope, nope! ;-)
no!
say it's not so!
knitting needles everywhere weep
Excellent article, Alison! Thank you for shedding such a positive light on crochet.
Well done, Alison! I too am a former crocheter who now prefers to knit most of the time (with the exception of occasional ponchos and baby blankets). I find it much easier to knit Continental style as I was already used to holding the yarn in my left hand. Gotta check out that corn maze (maize maze?) - I bet my kids would love it.
