What ever happend to pop, you might ask. Well, I did all the seaming, knit the neck edging, tried it on and then stopped. It's practically done (the two front flaps still need to be joined with the button and a small ribbed band), but I'm just not sure how happy I am with the little peek-a-boo opening. I have moments when I try it on and think that it looks really good. And then there are times that I've slipped it on and thought, no way, I should rip it and and make up a new neckline enitrely.

I think it looks really cool the way it is - really something different!
But if you don't feel comfortable wearing it I guess the whole point is gone, right? Why don't you try to finish it (there's so little work left now anyway) and then try wearing it, things often look wery different when you get the last, finishing touch.
Helene (who's practicing for the sockapalooza)
I think it's cute and unique!
It's different from what I've seen you knit on your blog but it's really cute. I agree with what Helene said, finish it and then see.
I could go either way on it. I think it looks very good on you, but it really comes down to personality and what you're comfortable wearing. (I think my swirt is cute, but I gifted it b/c I knew I'd never wear it!) Love the colors. It looks like it would be nice as a scoop neck without the pink band.
it's very cool. it's the type of thing that always looks great on somebody else(from my perspective that would be you). you have to get used to wearing it yourself. but the rest of us do need that someone else for inspiration to try something new and nifty, you're nominated.
i'm going to differ from the other comments here.
i really like it but it does seem a bit different from the types of things you normally knit. so while i think it's great, i wonder if you'd wear it all that much. if you don't love it you should probably tweak it until you do.
Honest opinion here: I vote for redoing the neckline, just something about it I don't like. I love the colors, they look great on you but the peek a boo does nothing for me. Sleep on it and see what you think.
Hmmmm, I love the colors, that's for sure, but I can see your hesitancy on that whole front peek-a-boo thing. I think that I couldn't pull it off but only you know if you would wear it or not! Very very pretty colors! BTW, when we lived in New Haven they were just starting to think about building that IKEA. I'm glad they have one now! My kids love IKEA too, looks like you had a fun time:-)
I like the peek-a-boo effect; however, I wish the pink part was knit in one piece. That might not be worth re-knitting for, just a thought. Follow your gut, or your heart, or whatever internal organ you favor.
I'm really not crazy about it. I would re-do the neckline.
Me gusta. But if you don't, that's what really counts.
I LOVE the colors, and I think it looks fantastic on you. If it were mine, though, I know it would probably sit in my closet unworn most of the time -- except for those occasional funky moods I have. So I'm probably not helping -- I'm a bit on the fence. You strike me as a person who has a fun personality who, as a young and active mom, could/would actually wear this, at least on occasion, so I think you should go for it. It's like a bit of spice to your food, and it makes you look like a hot mama!
First of all, hubba-hubba.
Second: The pink section seems to gap/pucker vertically ever so slightly where it meets the peek-a-boo window, which might be what you're not liking. It may be solved by the additional finishing/aggressive blocking, but I'd second michelle's idea to knit the pink section as one piece to get it to lay flatter. Also -- and hear me out on this -- I think the peek-a-boo window is too small. I'm not advocating a cleavage shot; I would enlarge it by making the pink section curve up more, if that makes any sense.
Don't give up, it's smokin' hot!
The scoop neckline part looks really beautiful. The pink part gets in the way of the graceful line of the scoop.
I like the potiron and the rouge together--perhaps the sweater doesn't need the pink. (Can't believe I'm saying that!)
If the pink part was redone in the potiron (orangy color) the neckline would blend nicely.) Or, what if you got rid of the button and just knit it in one piece? That could be smoother.
I really like the idea of just a scoopneck.
good luck!
Look, I would kill to be able to wear somthing like that. (But, I am a 38DD nursing mom, and it would be indecent!) Seriously, it looks great on you!
i love the colors together and the peek-a-boo, but think maybe you would like it more if the pink rib would lie flat maybe? but bottom line alter it so you will wear it. those colors are too fab to sit in the closet. and you would rock them so well!
I'm with Julia, it comes down to personality. I like it and I think it suits you.
Well, I love the peekaboo and I love the colored stripes, but I think the top of the peekaboo being a different color from the bottom is what isn't working for me all that much. I guess I would like it more if the pink had continued down about 3 inches before starting the orange. But you're certainly not going to rip down THAT far. So perhaps a different neckline is your best bet. Keep the round neck, but make the pink continue up from the body.
Don't even think of frogging it! It's so unique and unlike most sweaters today (sexy yet not revealing). The colors compliment the sweater!
PLS PLS PLS DO NOT CHANGE A THING (plus the button you select works)!
I agree with the flat lying pink part comments. Before ripping I would try and see if you could get it to lie more like the bottom (orange) part. I also like the idea of a bigger hole!
Which way do you think you'd wear it more? The colors are very cool (hot!) but if it's too fiddly and you're unsure then it's a redo.
The pink part looks clumsy and really doesn't add to the sweater. A plain scoop neck would be nice.
personally i like it. But my taste isn't to everyone's taste (if you know what i mean).
I'm with Leigh about reknitting the pink part with the "potiron"/darker orange -- the fit of everything below the pink part looks smooth and absolutely perfect, but the pink is a bit puckery and the fact that it's a contrasting colour really draws attention to it.
I think it's cute, but I'd have to agree with another commenter - I'd probably prefer the pink part to be one piece.
I love it! It's clever and unique. I think it looks rather Euro. It may take some getting used to...but you'll just be the lead on the trend! Enjoy!!!!
The colors are great - I have a Jones New York with the exact same colors. Would only change one thing - reknit the front pink section in one piece. Same dimensions - keep the peek a boo, definitely! The garment has such a cool look; streamline that front section into one piece (not divided in the center)and go for it.
I agree - knit the pink part in one piece, but it looks fabulous!
I think there are some clothes that you have to be in the right mood to wear. This sweater is one of them. Sometimes you feel like a POP, sometimes you dont! Definately finish it and when you are in the right mood, pop! there it is waiting for you!
Well it's not my colors but I do really like the pattern. :) Personally, I would keep the opening... it's different. :)
I think it looks great and you look fantastic in it!
I think it's adorable! It may not be your style (it's hard to tell what people will feel comfortable in and what they won't) but I LOVE it. Cute cute cute :)
I vote to redo. I would hate to think you don't end up wearing it and enjoying it because you have doubts. Love thy knit!
I dig it! Keep it! its fun and flirty without showing loads of skin. I love it! good colors too. Doesnt look awkward to me at all (unlike my spelling).
The colours are fabulous! Only I don“t fancy this neckline. Would redo it for something simplier. :)
I think POP looks good on you, you can definitely wear it. The colors look great, but the pink part is a bit distracting since it's a different color. Honestly I don't see it as something you would wear on a regular basis, but you might enjoy it on an occasional basis. I don't think the pop part is all that great, you could wear the rest of it as a scoopneck just fine. But you seem to be a person who loves knitwear to be worn, not an occasional thing. If you're not really happy with it and only you can know that, then redo it. Otherwise keep it.
I freakin' LOVE it, especially on you. The colors, the pop, everything! it POPS!!
But I also have many things in my closet that I've knit and don't wear. So I know the feeling.
I think the pink part looks to uneven. I dont like, though I like the colours and the idea of it, but I wouldn redo the neckline.
I LOVE it and wouldn't change a thing! It's retro and trendy at the same time and it looks beautiful on you! The addition of a big, beautiful button will tie it all together and you'll have a sweater that you'll wear for years!
I actually envision a straightforward crewneck working better on you. Unlike others, I don't think the risque peek a boo effect is all that you.
from a guy's perspective...
I find it curious that if the neckline were the orange, without the pink at all, it probably wouldn't faze you in the slightest. There's not even a hint of cleavage there. And yet, when you cover yourself even more, it suddenly becomes risque.
For what it's worth, if this is for you, and you have doubts, don't have the peek-a-boo. You need to feel comfortable.
I say if you don't like it, save it for next Christmas!! It'd make a faboo gift for the right gal. I must say though that I love the color combo.
i think it's fun and funky. go for it. and if you don't wear it, then rip it out next year. but finish it up and try it out for now.
I'm late on this one, but I vote for:
1. Cute
2. Finish it
3. Live with it
4. Rip it if you can't.
I like it. It's surprising and unique with a dash of sophistication. I think the colors are a lot of fun, too.
i'm with shannon...knit the pink as one piece and with a bigger peek-a-boo. you can truly pull it off--it's the perfect blend of sexy and fun...it suits you :)
I like the idea of the pink portion being one piece with no button. Or with it being a darker color. I think it's the fact the upper part is such a different lighter color that it draws the eye there immediately, which might be what you are feeling.
Or it might not... ;-)
I was thinking it might be good to see the whole sweater before making a decision. Maybe you've shown the bottom part before, I'll click your "pop" link and see.
I think it looks unfinished. That is a big distraction from forming a good opinion. I know you're hesitating to continue because it would be a lot more to un-do. However, I think this is one of those times where the sweater might be judged unfairly. I think right now it looks "wonky" (for reasons previously mentioned by others), but has a ton of potential. I say the sweater is innocent until proven guilty (I'm practicing for jury duty tomorrow). I vote for finishing it, and taking a picture of the whole sweater (ribbing to ribbing), on you again, and then voting again.
sorry, but I think it's an eyesore doesn't meld with the rest of the design at all it looks a bit tacked on.
I adore the colors... but agree that the pink part is peculiarly wild/subdued. if I had more pink, I think I'd to through Knitting on the Edge and find an outrageous pleated/ruffled edging and make sort of a ruff on one or both edges of the pink... but leave the peekabo cleavage!! You could wear it with a black knit mini with a matching pink stripe in it... either at the hem, or up one thigh like a tuxedo stripe....
I like it. It does look very different but that's why you chose the pattern in the first place right? I would finish it and wear it a couple of times and see how you feel about it then.
What does hubby think?
I would never have chosen this pattern myself as I am not generally into the peekaboo thing so my first thought was "re-do it with a new neckline". But seeing it in these colours (rather than the black) and on you (from what I can make out in the photo) it is going to be incredibly flattering, really highlight your neck and I LOVE the pink with the rest of it. I cast my vote with the finish it, wear it a few times and then decide camp. It would obviously be a pain to completely finish it and then change your mind, so I guess would be asking myself how much it matters if you don't wear it all the time? It definitely matters if you don't like it or would NEVER wear it, but does every piece you knit yourself have to be a workhorse or can some of them come out a few times a year when they are perfect for the occasion to make you feel great? Do you need to know in advance which it is likely to be? er, sorry to ramble on.
I LOVE it! Is the pattern still available somewhere? I truly, truly adore this sweater.
Wow, what a range of responses! I'm amazed at how different people's opinions are and how strong some of them are.
Anyhooo, just so you know, I love the colors and I don't have any problem with the peek-a-boo opening. I really like it in fact. I think it looks good on me and would love to wear it - it does open a bit more when the pink flaps are pinned together. And the slight wonkiness in the edge of the pink is only there when the two flaps aren't pinned together. It lays flat and curves well when held together.
What bothered me about the sweater is the construction of the top. Like many of you mentioned, the use of two separate flaps that start just at the armhole is a bit clunky. In the pattern pic, where the whole sweater is in black, it's not noticeable. But as soon as you see it in a lighter color (I think even if it were solid), you see there's just too much ribbing intersecting ribbing right next to more ribbing going on. It messes up the nice clean lines of the rest of the sweater.
Thanks so much for helping me put my finger on what was annoying me! I had been considering changing the whole think to a scoop neck to keep that clean look of the lower portion. I guess I was hoping that everyone would say that I didn't need to to any more work. So thanks for being honest with me! I'll definitely be working out some small changes (single top piece?, scoop neck?) to improve the design.
For anyone interested in the pattern, there's a link at the top of the archive page for this project here.
I think blocking will make a huge difference. Then think about it. Do you think if it was done in different shades of blue you would be feeling differently?
no! i love it! i would absolutely totally wear it!
LOVE IT! Where did you find the pattern? I want to make one.
