socks anyone?

A new knitalong!

I so loved receiving my Christmas socks from Sandi and knitting socks for my aunties, that I'm looking for a reason to knit more socks. Um, and have someone else knit more socks for me (hee hee). So who's up for a sock exchange? A secret sock pal, a socka-pal-ooza, if you will.

Here's how it'll go: You get a name, address, shoe size and some color/fiber preferences and knit a pair of socks for your secret sock pal. Someone else gets your name and info and does the same for you. We all send our socks off around the appointed date (maybe the first of March?) and then enjoy our fabulous new socks! Couldn't be funner, right?

Leave a comment if you're interested and I'll start collecting names and email addresses. Once we've got a good number of participants for our sockapalooza, I'll close the sign up and start collecting all the pertinent info. So sock it to me!

Update: Wow, what a response! Some clarifications: 1) Sorry, I was lazy about the "shoe size" thing. Of course we'll get real measurements from everyone. 2) I like the Ides of March as an end date. If we can get organized by mid-January, then that'll give us two months. 3) Non-bloggers are always welcome! 4) Folks outside of the US are welcome too. Maybe when everyone sends in their info, they can also indicate if they're willing to ship to other countries. It shouldn't be too expensive for a pair of socks. 5) Why not have beginners too?! Maybe we could have beginners swap with beginners though? 6) How 'bout I cap this at 100 people. More than that and I'd be worried that my organizational skills wouldn't be up to the task. That's 100 pairs of socks being knitted and sent around the world - incredible! 7) If you sign up, you gotta promise to really knit these socks. No leaving your sockapalooza pal in the lurch. Got it?

Update: Sign up for the sockapalooza is officially closed. But stay tuned, if the winter tour goes well, there might be a summer tour!

I'm game for the Sockapalooza! :)

Posted by: Jenifer at December 29, 2004 9:02 AM

I'm game for socks, that's easy bus knitting ;)

Posted by: Amber at December 29, 2004 9:24 AM

How fun. Thank you for organizing this Alison. Please include me.

Posted by: kathy at December 29, 2004 9:29 AM

I'm game, although I've only ever knit one sock before.... I promise to knit a pair for this though : )

Posted by: Jenika at December 29, 2004 9:33 AM

Whoops - screwed up my url on that last post. This should work now. Thanks!

Posted by: Jenika at December 29, 2004 9:34 AM

Me too, me too! I would love to join a sock-exchange.

Can I ask one thing though? Could people measure around their foot circumference (around the ball, ala PGR style)? And include that measurement? And then they could add if they have extra long or extra short feet, extra pointy toes, extra blunt toes, 6 toes, you know, that sort of stuff? (grin)

Maybe just shoe size and foot circumference.

Posted by: Amy Lu at December 29, 2004 9:37 AM

I love it! Count me in.

Posted by: Cher at December 29, 2004 9:38 AM

Ooooh, fun! I'll sockapalooza with ya!

Posted by: chris at December 29, 2004 9:46 AM

*throws her hand up in the air Hermione Granger style* Ohhh me! I want to sockapalooza with you as well! What a fabulous idea! And I vote for as many measurements as possible!

Posted by: MA at December 29, 2004 9:52 AM

is it allowed to participate even i live outside the us?

Posted by: Sibylle at December 29, 2004 9:55 AM

Sounds like fun to me... okay just sounds like an excuse to buy more/knit more fun sock yarn. I'm in!!

Posted by: Kate at December 29, 2004 9:57 AM

I'd love to do this, however I'm just getting started on sock knitting...can a new sock knitter really knit a pair of socks in two months?

Posted by: Jennifer at December 29, 2004 10:10 AM

What a fun idea Alison, count me in :¬) Nothing better then sock knitting to start the new year!

Posted by: Lydia at December 29, 2004 10:11 AM

What fun. Please put my name on the list.

Posted by: Jackie at December 29, 2004 10:28 AM

ooh! Count me in, too!

Posted by: Liz at December 29, 2004 10:31 AM

Good idea! I'm in.

Posted by: Martha at December 29, 2004 10:35 AM

i love it! thanks for volunteering to organize it. please count me in :)

Posted by: jody at December 29, 2004 10:36 AM

This sounds wonderful! I'm in!

Posted by: Dawn at December 29, 2004 10:40 AM

I would love to participate -- I love to knit socks. Is it okay for a nonblogger to be in on the fun?

Posted by: Karin at December 29, 2004 10:48 AM

It sounds like fun. Sign me up!

Posted by: Nancy at December 29, 2004 11:02 AM

Oh! I've done something like this before, and still am wearing the socks I received! Count me in.

Posted by: Cece at December 29, 2004 11:25 AM

Thank you for organizing such a fun exchange, Alison. Please add me to the list.

Posted by: Kristy at December 29, 2004 11:29 AM

Oooh, this is tempting. My thing is that I've made exactly two socks. Ever. And they don't match. I'm working on a third. So my question/major insecurity is: What if my socks suck compared to someone else's? Will we be matched on relative experience, so that my beginner's socks won't be received by, oh, say, YOU, and leave you wondering what the heck I was thinking? :)

Posted by: eliza b at December 29, 2004 11:44 AM

p.s. the third sock? doesn't match the other two. completely different patterns. I'm calling it research/experience-building. Ahem.

Posted by: eliza b at December 29, 2004 11:44 AM

oh gosh, how can I NOT want do this?! I'm in. Fun fun fun! Sockapalooza, here we go...

^_^

Posted by: tania at December 29, 2004 12:00 PM

Go on then,Mrs.''I hate knitting socks'' ! :0)

Posted by: Emma at December 29, 2004 12:04 PM

Count me in!

Posted by: Nicole at December 29, 2004 12:12 PM

I'm so in for sockapalooza! But I'm not really experienced with sizing other than S, M, L, XL. Will I still be able to make a fab pair that someone will be thrilled to receive and wear?

Posted by: Michele at December 29, 2004 12:18 PM

Count me in. Is it okay if I am still learning to make socks?? I have made one pair, but they were for my 19 mo old son? I hope that is okay. But I would have until March to finish them and get them off, and now Christmas knitting isn't in the way either!!

Posted by: Leslie at December 29, 2004 12:23 PM

sounds like fun, but I have the same concerns as eliza b... ??

Posted by: Peggy at December 29, 2004 12:26 PM

me, me!!

Posted by: Stephanie at December 29, 2004 12:31 PM

I knew that you'd be starting a new knitalong after clearing the decks yesterday. I didn't know it would be so soon!

Posted by: Jessica at December 29, 2004 12:36 PM

I might be interested - although I've NEVER knit socks before! The tiny guage scares me a little. I've knitted hats, ponchos, mittens, and am working on an aran sweater. Is it OK for me to join (I am not sure if I am experienced or not - I can do pretty much any type of knitting without trouble, but I am not nearly so quick as most people I see blogging. And I'm a student.)

But it sounds fun!

Posted by: Karlie at December 29, 2004 12:57 PM

sounds great, count me in!

Posted by: Leslie at December 29, 2004 12:58 PM

Sock-it-to me baby! I'd love to join the Sockapalooza. I'll be happy to give what ever measurements of my feet are necessary.

Posted by: Wyldturtle at December 29, 2004 1:21 PM

I'm just getting over a sock knitting spree -- can you ever really get over sock knitting sprees? -- and would love to join in the sockapalooza. Thanks for organizing the fun! I just finished a silly experiment, The Grand Experiment, where I compared a sock knit in the Classic cuff to toe style to a sock knit in the Eastern European toe to cuff style. Check out http://nonaknits.typepad.com/nonaknits/project_the_grand_experiment/index.html
for the details.

Posted by: nona at December 29, 2004 1:25 PM

Same question as Sybille, is it allowed to participate even I live outside the US? Even in Europe? Yes? Then count me in.

Posted by: leandra at December 29, 2004 1:30 PM

Please sign me up.

Posted by: Sarah at December 29, 2004 1:34 PM

I wanna do it! I wanna do it! Socks are my favorite!!!!! Fun fun fun!

I like the March deadline too. Maybe the ides of March???

Posted by: Jenny at December 29, 2004 1:37 PM

Wow, that list is long already!

Me and my small feet would like to join the Sockapalooza too :o)

Posted by: Anja at December 29, 2004 2:06 PM

I am definately interested in sockapalooza! It sounds so fun!

Not this time, (I'm trying to keep myself free for awhile) but I'm going to REALLY ENJOY watching this one. What fun!

Posted by: LauraA at December 29, 2004 2:17 PM

If it's not too late and if it's OK if I'm not in the US >> I'm in too !!
thanks for hosting this !

Posted by: karen at December 29, 2004 2:18 PM

Count me in too! Love these swaps!

Dawn :)

Posted by: dawn at December 29, 2004 2:40 PM

Okay, I really need to finish my own socks but I am game. But since I do a variation on Wendy's toe-up pattern could I second the motion for having some measurements? It is musch easier to figure when to start turning your heel when you know a number.

Posted by: mia at December 29, 2004 2:43 PM

twist my arm (no, don't need to twist it)

Please count me in toooooooo!

Posted by: Polly at December 29, 2004 2:51 PM

Hi Alison,
What a great idea. I hope it´s possible to join the sockapalooza even though I'm a nonblogger, and also living in Europe.

Posted by: Sanne B. at December 29, 2004 2:54 PM

Another Canadian here -
Reading blogs inspired me to knit my first pair of socks this fall, but I've got more on the needles, and yarn in the stash! Sockapalooza sounds like fun!

Posted by: Gina at December 29, 2004 2:55 PM

I'd be game. When and where?

(this sounds like fun!)

Posted by: Elspeth at December 29, 2004 2:59 PM

I'd like to join!

Posted by: sarah at December 29, 2004 3:13 PM

oh that sounds like fun! count me in

Posted by: cara at December 29, 2004 3:23 PM

Hey, can I join even though I don't have a blog? I would like to!

Posted by: Kristel at December 29, 2004 3:38 PM

Ok, ok...I'm in. The Ides of March sound like a doable date.

Posted by: margene at December 29, 2004 3:40 PM

Please, add me to the list. It sounds like fun.

Posted by: judy at December 29, 2004 3:44 PM

I'm so in!

Posted by: Brynne at December 29, 2004 3:48 PM

I'd really like to join you guys, if someone is willing to ship overseas. But I'm a bit conserned about the shoe size thing. I don't think we have the same sort of numbers. For instance, I'm a size 38, does that mean anything to you...???

Posted by: Helene at December 29, 2004 4:03 PM

Helene I am a 38 too :)

Posted by: Sibylle at December 29, 2004 4:20 PM

I'm soooooo tempted! But I doubt I'd ever finish the second sock. I'm a lousy sock knitter :-(

P.S. Lucky, lucky, LUCKY whoever gets Emma's socks. I've been wearing the ones she knit for me all winter and there's nothing like wearing hand-knit socks, especially the fancy ones she knits. This is going to be a fun knitalong to follow!

Posted by: Becky at December 29, 2004 4:24 PM

Can a crocheter participate? (I promise my socks are nice! I just need foot length and circumference, and maybe a leg circumference at the desired height.)

Posted by: Andrea at December 29, 2004 5:08 PM

Me too please! Thanks for being the organizer.

Posted by: Steph at December 29, 2004 5:10 PM

Me, me, me! I vote for as many measurements as possible, too. Great excuse to buy more yarn :-).

Posted by: Kathy at December 29, 2004 5:40 PM

Can I play, too??

Posted by: Jackie at December 29, 2004 5:40 PM

Count me in. Socks are the one thing I can finish on a deadline.

Posted by: Melissa at December 29, 2004 5:45 PM

btw..one sock knit along had the person measure from their heel to the big toe, instead of shoe size then there shouldn't be confusion on different sizes..hope you don't mind me putting that in ;0)

Posted by: cara at December 29, 2004 5:45 PM

Oh, Me please. I want in on the sockapalooza. I'll never get around to making myself a pair, but I can fit time to make someone else a pair - especially with a deadline!

April

Posted by: Deena at December 29, 2004 7:06 PM

Posted by: sarah at December 29, 2004 7:14 PM

Posted by: Cathi at December 30, 2004 11:14 AM

I haven't checked your blog over the holidays, so I only just discovered your sockapalooza. I understand if I'm too late, but I thought I'd try anyway! I think this would be fun!

Posted by: Christy at December 30, 2004 11:27 AM

Alison,

Hello. Yours is a daily read, but this will be my first time posting. This project seemed simply too momentous to pass up: I am a non-blogger [the largest reason for my self-imposed no posting rule] and have 2 separate socks in the WIP pile. I hope to seize this opportunity to make myself start a blog [been in the dreaming stages for months now], get the sock momentum train rolling AND participate in a swap. Three birds, no stones, just sock yarn.

I know that I am #106, but I counted up to 7 repeat posters or declines, so I think I should be good. If'n not, another time then.

Thank you, thank you for the consideration and the daily inspiration.

Posted by: neysa at December 30, 2004 11:35 AM

I'd like to be included if it's not too late!

Posted by: LeAnne at December 30, 2004 12:53 PM

I am not a blogger. Been knitting for about 9 months now & am obsessed. I have made 2 pair of socks that turned out great so I would love to do this. How do you all seem to get to know each other? The other thing is..does this work. I joined a cross stitch thingie one time & worked on several then one person hung us up & we all never got our project back.

Posted by: Donna S. at December 30, 2004 10:29 PM

Yes please.

Posted by: MK at December 30, 2004 10:38 PM

Okay, we've reached 120 and I think I'm going to close things down for now. If this sock exchange goes well, I'll be happy to do another one in the future. Fingers crossed!

And thanks for the incredible response!
