knitalong reborn

After seeing S's weasley sweater every day in the window in the store, I've decided that I have to make myself one. Did I tell you that I actually tried it on? Uh, yeah, I did - I tried on my 4 year-old son's sweater. And it fit great! Granted, it was about a foot too short, but the rest was so nice and snug and the little boy sleeves were perfect 3/4 sleeves on me. Once I saw it on me, there wasn't really any question in my mind that I had to make another one. So I ordered some more of the Felted Tweed from Jimmy Beans.

Now, I thought this was the great red color that my weasley-along co-hostess, Jenn, used for hers (that color, by the way, was called Conker), but it's purple. It's a pretty purple. I like the purple very much. But I really had red in my head for this sweater. I may have to stash this purple and order some red.

So I'm thinking I need to officially re-open the weasley knitalong. I'd love to hear some updates from those I still have listed as unfinished. Anyone else out there planning on making one of these? Any new pattern sources?? That pattern hasn't gotten any easier to find. Any interest in my writing up a standard pattern? And of course, anyone making other Harry Potter knits is welcome to join! Got something you want to make before the release of the next film in November? Join us weasley knitters!

And for the few who are interested, here's the house I was recently sorted into. I'm not as much a fan of the colors (though I loved that Hufflepuff scarf in Prisoner of Azkaban), but I find the principles of the house the most appealing.

I am interested in joining a weasley along, do you by chance know if the pattern comes larger than the rowan one? I am much larger than a 34 chest but would like to participate. the yarn looks great - that purple color -

Hi I would love to do the weasley sweater for myself. Like you said I am curious to see the pattern and adapt it to fit me. I am bigger than you are so the kids size 4 most likely won't work but I like the idea of this fitting tighter with 3/4 sleeves. I have never done a knit a long but I am gave and ready. I'll check back to see your thoughts.

Posted by: gina L at August 12, 2005 11:18 AM

Alison, I have the back and sleeves done for both of my boys' sweaters. I am trying to work out the H graph. I have never done a knitting graph before but I enjoy a challenge.

As far as the pattern, I used a basic pattern for the 2 year old from "Designing your own kid's knits" and for my 11 year old, I made a sweater from a debbie bliss pattern and I am just swapping out the graphic on the front for the H.

By the way, I made the 11 year old's oversized on purpose so when he doesn't wear it... I know who it will fit- ME!

I would love to join a knit a long! I've been looking for a pattern for about 7 months now. I want to make them for my whole family (and two younger brothers ages 11 and 10). I was just resigning myself to doctor up one of the sweater patterns I have, but if there is one that'll be worked up for the knit a long that sure would be a lifesaver for me!

Posted by: Christy at August 12, 2005 11:28 AM

YES!!! Write it! Write it! I've been dying to do one for myself!!

See you Sunday..maybe? Sounds like you're going back to NYC.

Posted by: Anna at August 12, 2005 11:43 AM

Dear Alison:
I would love a Weasley and would really like, if you can't find a pattern source, to see a pattern you would come up with. Not to pile the work on, but I am also looking out for the long sleeve NBaT. I can send cookies, if you like :-D

Posted by: Penny at August 12, 2005 11:44 AM

I just completed a weasly for my 2 yr old and would love one. I put a J on the front of his instead of H or R. I would want a different letter as well. But yes sign me up, why not, I'm done with my socks.

Posted by: Leslie at August 12, 2005 12:03 PM

I'd love a pattern for the Weasley sweater especially if it goes higher than a 34 chest. :) I've been looking for one for ages.

Posted by: raquel at August 12, 2005 12:09 PM

My sister would love a Weasley sweater, and I was considering making her one before the movie comes out, so it sounds like I'm in. I was thinking I would just make her a standard sweater and put the H on it, but I'm open to other pattern suggestions. Thanks!

Posted by: sarah b. at August 12, 2005 12:16 PM

My husband wants a Weasley! I'd love one for myself too. Count me in for the pattern.

P.S. I'm a Squib!

Posted by: jillz at August 12, 2005 12:32 PM

I think it would be fun! Besides, I'm a felted tweed addict! :)

Posted by: Amy at August 12, 2005 12:34 PM

Please do create a pattern for it. I love those sweaters. I'm just sorry I didn't get a chance to make one myself.

Posted by: Liz at August 12, 2005 1:06 PM

Alison, it would be WONDERFUL if you would write up a standard pattern that could be used for both kids and adults, male and female. It would be a great candidate for my first ever sweater. And I think reopening the knitalong is a great idea as well!

Posted by: Becky at August 12, 2005 1:12 PM

I would love to make a Weasley sweater. Haven't been able to get my hands on a pattern in over a year of searching though. It would be great if you would write a comparable pattern. I'd make it in an adult size (no kids to knit for here). BTW, love the purple yarn.

Posted by: Lisa at August 12, 2005 1:41 PM

I missed your first KAL and knit one on my own. If you open another KAL, I'll send you a picture. I used Encore Plymouth yarn instead of the Rowan mainly because my 3 year old is way too messy for expensive yarn. The pattern is tricky to find- I drove all over Seattle to try to find it.

Posted by: Janell at August 12, 2005 2:03 PM

I am interested in a Weasley knitalong but I do not have the Rowan pattern. I would love it if you decided to write one up since you're patterns are so great! Count me in.

Posted by: kellyt at August 12, 2005 2:10 PM

I'd love to join your knitalong! I've already started mine (multiple times, but this last one is *going* to work), but still have most of the front plus both sleeves to finish. I'm using the pattern kit from Scotland (the one you linked to), but scaled it up to fit me, and designed my own A (twice... after I got the scaled grid the wrong orientation the first time around). I can do other letters too, if people need them.

Posted by: Andrea at August 12, 2005 2:13 PM

I have the yarn and pattern for the Hermione Hat from Prisoner of Azkaban, so that is next up. But I would love for you to write the pattern for the Weasley sweater!

Posted by: Deb at August 12, 2005 2:21 PM

i was just thinking - do you think the pure and simple pattern 9724 see it at : http://www.knittingpureandsimple.com/page2.html
would work with the H or R done in duplicate stitch after? it has a roll neck and I think thats what the weasley sweater has???

I'd love to join a knit-along for an HP sweater. Daughter is going to be Hermione for Halloween and I'm half way through the POA Griffindor scarf (loved yours). She'll want a lion or an H I'm sure. And yes, I'd love a pattern if you're making one.

Posted by: Ann at August 12, 2005 3:27 PM

I am ALL about the HP sweater for me! I've been trying to find the pattern forever -- checking ebay and other sources, but to no avail. I wish they'd reprint it in every size imaginable! Seems only natural to have that particular pattern available during a year when a new book and new movie both come out! I'm going to start my Griffindor scarf soon too....

Posted by: joan at August 12, 2005 4:07 PM

I've had the Harry Potter sweater pattern for a little while now and have been dreaming of knitting my very own. Why is that just when I've decided to get started on Christmas knitting to avoid the rush, you post your fantastic idea? Count me in! :)

Posted by: Elspeth at August 12, 2005 4:35 PM

Alison-I've been itching to make a PoA scarf ever since I started reading the new book (and re-reading the old ones and watching the movies over and over... :). I'd love to join the knit-along. I asked my husband if he'd wear a Weasley sweater and he was less than enthusiastic (he may come around) so I may just make it for myself!

Posted by: Cristina at August 12, 2005 4:53 PM

I am totally psyched that so many of you are up for another round of weasley knitting! I'll start working on a new button and some info about all the patterns out there for Harry Potter knitting, including some suggestions for basic patterns that you could easily adapt into the "Harry Potter" sweater. Eventually, I'll write one up myself for you all - nothing too fancy, just some standard numbers and design details.

This weekend's busy for me, so look for an update in the knitalong sidebar sometime late next week. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!

Posted by: alison at August 12, 2005 5:11 PM

I made myself one with a 38" chest (at least I think that's what it ended up being), and did most of the body in the round. The sleeves were a bit long, but I liked them that way. I can write up the pattern for anyone who is interested

Posted by: MA at August 12, 2005 5:30 PM

I'd like to join and make the one for my 18 month old son. I have the pattern somewhere from the place that you had the link to in your sidebar -- is that not a good one?

Ingrid, it's great that you found one! The Rowan pattern is discontinued and the Yarn Warehouse only sells kits with their yarn, so folks who want to use the Rowan yarn or a different yarn are having a hard time getting a pattern, is all.

Posted by: alison at August 12, 2005 6:26 PM

I'm totally knitting a Weasley in the near future. Before November, for sure. I've had the yarn forever, I'm going to use Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran in a discontinued color, a very lovely mauve. I'm using a top down raglan pattern and still figuring out what to do with the intarsia, since it's in the round. I may split and do the front and back flat and separate, after the yoke.

Like you, I'm doing 3/4 sleeves, and it's going to be VERY fitted...but that's because I only have 8 balls of yarn!

Posted by: Cirilia at August 12, 2005 9:18 PM

It's funny - the yarn warehouse pattern that came with the kit has been photocopied so many times that the picture is basically illegible. I like the yarn ok - but am glad that the kit was very inexpensive due to the quality of the pattern/photocopy. Plus, the pattern sizes are in cm si I've had a heck of a time figuring out which size to make.

I am looking forward to an Alison-ized pattern!

Cool sweater; fun sorting hat test!

Posted by: Carolyn B. at August 12, 2005 9:53 PM

Clearly, you're psychic, because I have been planning to write you and ask your advice about finding a Weasley pattern for my 4-year-old. The Yarn Warehouse pattern looks as though it would be short in the sleeves, and my daughter has longish arms. She is very politely demanding a Weasley, and I'm sure her sister will want one as well. If you can find (or create) a pattern, I would love to join the Weasley-Along (my very first ever!).

Posted by: Erica at August 12, 2005 10:38 PM

Alison! I'm a Gryfinndor. Fun quiz. Also, on an unrelated note, I'm having a NBaT contest. Look what your knits can inspire!!

Posted by: Jenny at August 13, 2005 2:45 AM

Thank you Alison! I was going to comment to say that I'd love a Weasley pattern, but you seem to have enough votes already. I'm not sure if I can join a knitalong (too many other projects with deadlines already) but if you would post patterns I would be eternally grateful. :) I saw someone else is using Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran - any opinions about that versus the Rowan tweed?

We are almost finished reading the Half Blood Prince and my kids and I are excited about the new movie. I would love to join a KnitALong as I have never done one and I have a feeling I could use some support from other knitters on a project like this. I KNOW that I could not adjust a pattern etc. It sounds like it would be great fun and I would learn something new...making the "H" in the middle. THANKS!

Posted by: emmy at August 13, 2005 12:41 PM

I'd love to be part of a weasley-along. My LYS sold out of the Rowan pattern over a year ago, but I found one by querying the KnitList.

Right now I'm making Laura's book scarf in different house colors. Somewhere I read that 60% of adult HP fans think they belong in Ravenclaw. Those I know all want the movie colors and PoA trapped bar pattern. :)X

I made a Weasley for my dd and used a pattern by Yankee Knitter called the Easy Roll Raglan (not exactly correct since it has raglan sleeves, but it turned out beautifully). It is sized for adults & children:
http://www.patternworks.com/PWShopping/partsview.asp?action=lookup&partno=800037&subject=U36.L6&catpos=8

There is also another pattern by Yankee Knitter that would work for bulky yarns called Easy Bulky Pullover. It is sized for adults & children -- and both come in larger chest sizes. It is more like the Weasley Sweater: http://www.patternworks.com/PWShopping/partsview.asp?action=lookup&partno=800031&subject=U36.L9&catpos=8

Sorry about the links -- you will need to cut & paste them into your browser to make them work.

I didn't have any luck finding the Rowan pattern either. I emailed Rowan and they said it wasn't available anymore. They suggested I try my local knitting stores carrying Rowan yarns, but I didn't have any luck.

The Pure & Simple pattern is very nice too and I think it would make a nice Weasley Sweater.

Posted by: dappleblue at August 13, 2005 10:00 PM

I would LOVE to join a Weasley KAL! I was planning on knitting sweaters for my two sons soon anyhow, and I know Mom and Dad would like Weasleys as well. I will look around for the Rowan pattern too.

Posted by: Laura at August 15, 2005 10:25 AM

I was SO envious the last time you started the weasley knitalong. I couldn't play along then, I don't remember why - probably had too many projects already. To state that is not the case this time would be lying... but I can't miss two weasley-alongs, can I?? I just have to finish my Eris and my sockapal2za socks in a hurry. Yes, pattern please :) although I'm seriously considering the Yarn Warehouse version.

Posted by: helene at August 15, 2005 12:42 PM

Okay, I'd L.O.V.E. to join a Weasley knit-along!! and if you want to work out a standard pattern I'd be absolutely interested in that as well! And thanks for the link to the sorting hat quiz...I'm a Gryfindor!! 89%! Sweet.

Posted by: Cambria W at August 15, 2005 7:50 PM

What fun! I am halfway through a Gryffindor scarf for my ten-year-old daughter. It's the style of the first movie, as she wants to be a relatively age-appropriate Hermione for Halloween this year. Count me in!
