weasleys' weekly wizard wheezes

I've got weasley updates!

Amber has finished about a third of her Azkaban scarf
Andrea is doing the "A" on her sweater!
Anne finished her weasley - she used Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed and knit it top down using Cabin Fever's "Knit it from the Top" pattern #602 (she even did the intarsia in the round!)
Hayden would really love to make one of the sweaters Hermione wears in the upcoming Goblet of Fire movie (check her post for links to pics)
Janell, who already made a gorgeous weasley in Plymouth Encore for her son, has bought more to make another
Laura has been getting ready to start sweaters for her boys: she's using Felted Tweed and made a pattern with the Sweater Wizard and charted out the initials already!
Missy writes that she'll be ordering Felted Tweed in red and ginger for her kids' sweaters and she'd love to do a snitch sweater like Harry gets in the latest book - anyone else working on that?
Nathania is making great progress on her Slytherin house sweater
MA is working on her second weasley sweater, this one in Knitpics Andean Treasure yarn, and has just gotten her letter chart all ready
Patti is working on two weasleys for her sons using the basic pattern from Design your own Kids Knits and a Debbie Bliss basic sweater pattern
Ruth's son's Gryffindor scarf is almost as long as he is!

I'm working on the basic pattern, which will be a replica of the now-discontinued Rowan pattern and will include charts for the letter "H". I should be able to post it next week!

Next, a little HP knitting controversy. Have you seen the picture from the upcoming Goblet of Fire movie of Cho wearing her school scarf? There is some discussion that it looks like a 1x1 rib, instead of the stockinette that all the Prisoner of Azkaban patterns call for. I have to say, I'm not convinced. Just looks like machine-knit stockinette to me.

Now, settle a bet for me. Does this go with formal wear?

Meanwhile, my own HP knitting quandry remains. I'm still unsure about the color I want to use for my weasley. I'm thinking that the ginger is a little too orangey for me. I'm wondering if I shouldn't just order the Treacle and see what color it really is, since it sometimes looks black online and sometimes chocolatey. I think either would work for me. (Hey doesn't Harry love Treacle tart? It's okay to click - no spoilers, just food talk!) So, anyone seen the Treacle? Or eaten it?

I agree that Cho's scarf is plain ol' stockinette.

The bracelet...I'd say doesn't really go with formal wear, unless your formal wear is teenagey formalwear (i.e. my little sis would get away with it, but she wears flipflops to all of her school dances).

Haven't seen teh Treacle, but it looks like chocolate on my screen.

Oh, that treacle color looks gorgeous! Although I love ginger, for this sweater, I would get the treacle. And I agree with you on the stockinette vs. 1X1 rib scarf. It definitely looks like regular old stockinette to me. Although I can sort of see why someone would say that it looks like rib since there are some small gaps between stitches in the part that is being folded over.

Hi Alison, I have some treacle felted tweed in my stash...it's definitely a warm, dark brown, with little flecks of light brown, light blue, and off-white. pretty!

Hi Alison. I have a few questions for you about the Weasley sweater. 1) Are you writing it for both adult and children's sizes? 2) Approximately what gauge are you planning for? Any yarn recommendations? 3) For a 2-4 year old size, approximately how much yarn would you recommend buying? What did you do for your adorable boys' sweaters? Thanks so much for writing a pattern for us!

I agree too, I still really think it's stockinette! I mean, stockinette can easily spread the way they're pointing it out, almost as much a 1x1 sometimes.

Yes, definately will go with formal wear. And, all the cool people will comment you on what a clever dresser you are.

(this is not sarcasm)

Definitely formal wear, if your a teen that is! Although I admit to having several myself, lol.

I definitely think the scarf is probably machine stockinette.

After seeing all the other patterns I'm thinking of doing an initial sweater and a quiditch sweater...mmmm....decisions, decisions.

It looks like stretched stockinette to me--the stitches are just more regular than those that are hand-knit. Now if my wool would EVER arrive I could start my scarf!

I have to say I'm a bit confused about the treacle tart recipe. Why is it called that if it's made with Lyle's golden syrup? The golden syrup is yummy but isn't the same as treacle. Treacle is much darker and is a delicious substitute for molasses. Either way I'm interested to know if anyone's tried it.

Thanks for the updates Alison... I love checking up on what everyone is doing.

I've finished the Hermione hat. I just haven't taken a blog worthy photo yet. I was actually a little scared of myself in the photos I did take:)

Looks like stockinette to me.

I'm actually doing an "A" on my sweater, but I can see why you thought it was an "H' from that photo. ;) I'll have a photo of the finished initial soon... I'm getting closer!

I don't know about formal wear, but I can tell you that my DH did not take his Potter wristband off until he finished the book. He's an attorney, who has to wear suits every weekday except Friday. And it took him at least a couple of weeks to finish the book.

In my opinion Cho's scarf is 1x1 ribbing. In the photo you can see both sides of the scarf in a couple places. Neither side looks like reverse stockinette (the purls have to be somewhere) and during the color changes neither side shows a purl color change (where you get a row of purl bumps in both colors). In 1x1 ribbing both sides would look like stockinette and the color changes would show up as nice lines. This is what I see....

I love that treacle color in person, though that other dark brown is super nice as well. Either one will look perfect for the main color. Brown is also perfect for fall :)

I am praying that the scarf is stockinette in the round (or doubleknit, even) because I would just NOT be able to face it if it were 1x1 rib. Ack!

The felted tweed looks pretty splufty. If you are doing an initial sweater, then there is no reason not to go with the Treacle and use the Ginger for the letter. I think they would complement each other pretty well.

hey Alison, the socks are finished for my pal if you would like to included them on your next update and I'm just waiting for the wool to come for the hp knit-along!
