one thing, two thing, red thing, blue thing

Yes, yes, the boys will be Thing One and Thing Two this year for Halloween. Remember Thing One and Thing Two from The Cat in the Hat?

The perfect costumes for the boys, since this is what they always look like at home.

Well, except for the shirts and the hair. And that's where I come in. Bright blue Fun Fur hats for thing hair...

thing one hat - check

...and red boy-sized Thing 1 and Thing 2 nothing but t-shirts.

GGH Bali comes in the PERFECT colors

I better get knitting - only 17 days left to make another hat and two shirts!

My friend and I were going to be the same thing for halloween but changed our minds and are going at heatmiser and coldmiser from "the year without santa claus" Can't wait to see what the boys look like.

Oh my goodness, that's such an awesome idea! Your boys are so cute, and that costume idea seems to be a great fit for their playful personalities. Can't wait to see them in the finished outfits. :-)

Posted by: Rebekkah at October 13, 2005 10:05 AM

Amazing! (the idea AND *you* for actually knitting it)!

Posted by: Stephanie at October 13, 2005 10:13 AM

Your costume idea is brillant! I'm going to ask my girls if they would like to be thing 1 and thing 2 next year. They will be 7 and 5, so maybe not, but for your boys - it is such an awesome idea.

Posted by: Lisa at October 13, 2005 10:13 AM

I'm loving the costumes! I especially love the hair, lol! Will you be Dr. Seus?

Posted by: Liz at October 13, 2005 10:15 AM

That is just too adorable. I can't wait to see pictures of them in their costumes.

Posted by: Amanda at October 13, 2005 10:19 AM

Oh my gosh!!! That is just the most clever and cute idea!

My mother made a raggedy ann wig for me when I was little. She used a mop and red dye.

Your boys will have very fond memories of their halloween costume!

Wow! I can't wait to see when the costumes are done! So Great!

Posted by: Amber at October 13, 2005 10:25 AM

The hat looks great! Is it all fun fur or did you double up with something heavier?
Knitting the shirts? That's real love! My kids would get red sweatshirts with felt decorations ironed on with that fusible stuff.

Posted by: Deanna at October 13, 2005 10:26 AM

OMG that is going to be so awesome! Is there a Mom of the year award? 'Cause you should totally be nominated for even coming up with idea!! :)

Posted by: Jessica at October 13, 2005 10:27 AM

Absolutely adorable! What a great idea.

Posted by: jenny at October 13, 2005 10:28 AM

Wow! I am very impressed. Perhaps two hats in fun fur is possible, but two boy sized NBATs too? You are too much. I can't wait to see them all dressed up. Great idea!

Posted by: The Feminist Mafia at October 13, 2005 10:33 AM

ADORABLE!!! Can't wait to see the finished "things"!!!

Posted by: Jeanie at October 13, 2005 10:34 AM

I love it! And I am impressed with your productivity level. Lately, all I finish are socks.

Posted by: steph at October 13, 2005 10:59 AM

Great idea, I would make the hat/hair and go to Old Navy for shirts!

Posted by: Carla Hibbard at October 13, 2005 11:11 AM

OMG what adorable costumes! Love the hat - they will look so cute for Halloween!

Posted by: Lisa D. at October 13, 2005 11:18 AM

What cute costumes! What knitting-mommy dedication! What lucky boys!!

Posted by: christina at October 13, 2005 11:21 AM

Genius! I love it.

Posted by: Pigwotknits at October 13, 2005 11:22 AM

YEAH!!!! Guess that means the miniNBAT pattern I ordered will be up soon :)

Posted by: helene at October 13, 2005 11:22 AM

That's a lot of knitting! But such a great idea. The first hat looks great--will you be sharing the pattern? I can think of a few other uses for furry halloween wigs.

Posted by: katie at October 13, 2005 11:47 AM

I usually lurk and rarely comment....but I *had* to note and tell you that I love that idea! Your boys are awfully lucky to have a mom who makes them such great costumes. :)

Posted by: Nikki at October 13, 2005 11:49 AM

Oh my goodness! They are going to be precious! I can't wait to see the pictures!!!

Posted by: Stacey at October 13, 2005 11:50 AM

Those Seuss costume ideas are fantastic! You are absolutely amazing. I used to sew our kids costumes when they were younger. So much nicer and better made than store bought.

Posted by: Carolyn at October 13, 2005 12:00 PM

I have to say Alison...I agree...Knitting Mom Of The Year Award goes to you.
When I was growing up, we NEVER EVER had store bought costumes. My grandmother, incredible seamstress, always made our costumes (I have four siblings, and two cousins) I dont think she slept at all during the month of October!
I started this way with my kids, but now we have four...they are a hand full enough, and I really do value my sleep. 'Nuff said :)

I totally dig the blue hats though. What an incredible idea! I might steal that idea at some point. But I have to say, I wouldnt be knitting the rest of the costume...cheap red sweatpants and sweatshirts would have to do!

Posted by: Carla at October 13, 2005 12:17 PM

That is the best idea ever. I don't think I've ever seen a child dress up as a Dr. Seuss character. And the sweaters will be great because unlike other costumes they will be able to wear those year-round. Genius!

Posted by: Saun at October 13, 2005 12:18 PM

So creative! Can hardly wait to hear how you made the boy's hats/wigs!

Posted by: Leslie at October 13, 2005 12:23 PM

[long time reader, first time to comment.]
You are crazy and I LOVE it. How many hours of knitting would you say you get to do in a day. As a stay at home mother I get about 2 hours a day, and I feel like that's a lot, but I can't seem to complete things as quickly as you do. You are amazing.

By the way... I hope that you do another sock swap... It's a bummer that so many people ruined it this time, but I have been watching the last couple and have wanted to join, but was not confident enough in my sock knitting abilities. Now I am, and am dieing to "get in on it."
Hope you'll consider doing another.

HA!! The blue "hair" is fantastic - great idea!

Posted by: Vicki at October 13, 2005 12:53 PM

OMG!!! That has to be the coolest twins costume combo I've ever seen!

You so rock with that funfur hair.

Can't wait to see them in all their glory.

Posted by: Chelee at October 13, 2005 12:55 PM

Those are awesome custumes...would you share the pattern for the hat? Thank you...

Posted by: Isela at October 13, 2005 1:30 PM

You are the coolest mom ever! Those are going to be wicked cool costumes!! I'm a tad bit jelous..... :)

Posted by: Karen at October 13, 2005 2:04 PM

What a cute idea! Maybe I should knit myself something for Halloween.

Posted by: Alexa at October 13, 2005 2:15 PM

OMG!!!!!!!

Love, Love, Love, Love IT!!!!! WOW!

Posted by: knittingnurse at October 13, 2005 2:18 PM

Too, too cool. They're going to look great.

Posted by: Ruth at October 13, 2005 2:22 PM

omigawd, that is so damn cute. Where do you get patterns for fun fur wigs? Please don't tell me you made it up?

Posted by: Julia at October 13, 2005 2:26 PM

That's the perfect costume for your boys - how did you come up with such a great idea? I am sure they will bring in a load of candy!!!

Posted by: Tiffany at October 13, 2005 2:32 PM

waht a clever idea !!
for the wig, did you knit a "regular hat" ? or the Hallowig from knitty ?

love it !
can't wait to see your 2 things...

Posted by: karen at October 13, 2005 2:36 PM

that's awesome! i love dr seuss!

Posted by: thuy at October 13, 2005 2:57 PM

Those are going to be the best costumes out there!
I hope you are able to do another sockapalooza, as I missed the deadline for the last one. I have been checking your blog every day to see if there's a notice about it. I would totally understand if you don't as so many have flaked out, but I have greedy hopes that it will be a go!

Posted by: Erica at October 13, 2005 3:03 PM

What a fabulous idea for Halloween costumes. Be sure the boys swing by my house in Palo Alto, CA for trick-or-treating!

Posted by: nona at October 13, 2005 3:27 PM

You my dear, are out of control! Don't you sew too? Wouldn't that have been easier for the shirts... oh never mind, easy isn't the point. I can't wait to see the final products... to be revealed on the 31st I presume?

Posted by: Johanna at October 13, 2005 3:30 PM

What an original idea, I love it! I can't wait to see the final pic.

Posted by: springy at October 13, 2005 3:31 PM

That is just plain incredible.

Posted by: Brynne at October 13, 2005 3:43 PM

Alison, you make me hang my head in shame! I don't even knit clothes for kids cause they outgrow them so fast and here you are knitting costumes!! This may be why I'm Mom to *my cat* and you have twins, devine serendipity! :)

You get my vote for Knitter and Mom of the year!!

Posted by: Debi at October 13, 2005 3:44 PM

I love it!!! My boys went as Max and a Wild Thing from Where The Wild Things Are one year, and it perfectly captured that whole "small boys" thing. May have to borrow this idea for next year ;-)

Posted by: Kathy at October 13, 2005 4:22 PM

Oh, that is the best idea EVER! It makes me want to have kids just so that I could knit them cool Dr. Seuss stuff!!!

Posted by: Cassa at October 13, 2005 4:47 PM

Mom of the year? I don't know about that. But when the idea came to me, I simply couldn't resist! I just made up an easy peasy little square hat pattern for the fun fur. I'll be happy to post it when the second hat is done. The shirts should be fun to make. I'll have a kid's-sized NBAT pattern to share with you all and the boys can wear the shirts after Halloween as regular shirts/sweaters. And Carla, we've already been to Old Navy to get the red sweatpants!

Yes, Johanna, I think I've decided that if this sort of Halloween insanity persists, I'll have to start using the sewing machine! ;0)

Posted by: alison at October 13, 2005 4:48 PM

You just keep amazing me with your super knitting skills and your creativity, mama. Thing 1 and Thing 2 - love it! :-)

PS - my yarn and needles came today, so I'll be casting on for my HP scarf in mere moments! Wheeee!

Posted by: Kara at October 13, 2005 4:49 PM

Awwwwsome idea.. Mwah hahaha..

hehehe.
I might just have to jump on the band wagon.. I have a thing one and thing two around here too!

Posted by: Denise at October 13, 2005 5:06 PM

Such an awesome idea! Can't wait to see the boys all dressed up in their costumes.

Posted by: Dana at October 13, 2005 6:15 PM

Will you adopt me so that my inner child can have an amazing Halloween? Those costumes are so cool!

Posted by: Dava at October 13, 2005 6:23 PM

Oh my gosh Alison. I think this is the cutest thing ever! I WANT to see them in person :) You are so creative :)

Posted by: Dani at October 13, 2005 7:49 PM

You are an awesome mom! Can't wait to see how these turn out.

Posted by: Lisa at October 13, 2005 8:35 PM

Holy crap! (Direct quote.) I made my husband get up from working at his desk, walk across the room and come and look at this. "She knitted that?" Yep. "Wow." Yep.

Posted by: Collette at October 13, 2005 9:31 PM

That's amazing!! I can't believe that you're actually going to knit their costumes!

Posted by: yuvee at October 14, 2005 6:54 AM
