knitting makes the top 10

From the Canadian tech show, Call for Help (which hubby TiVo's):

>> Leo Laporte: Okay, if you're tired from surfing around on your computer for interesting news to read, if you go to, you know, a bunch of different blogs, it can get completely out of control. Wouldn't it be nice to search and research your favourite topics, very simply, one site, tell you exactly what's going on, where to go? Amber's here to show us how one of the most popular blog tracking sites has a new feature that makes it even easier to keep track of what's going on. Technerati, what is Technerati?

>> Amber MacArthur: Basically what it does is, it indexes all of the blogs that are out there, so over 11 million blogs....

You just pick a subject and you basically search based on the tag, but a tag is really just like a keyword...

Actually, if we look back on the site, we'll check out some of the Top 10 searches, so these are the types of things that people will tag...

So some of the Top 10 searches are, podcasts, Michael Jackson, Web 2.0, KNITTING -- KNITTING ALWAYS COMES UP IN THE TOP 10, WHICH I FIND KIND OF INTERESTING -- John Stewart, Ruby on Rails, Star Wars, Trio and Ajax.

Uh, Michael Jackson? Still? But hey, we beat John Stewart and Ruby on Rails (what ever the heck that is!) We are so taking over the internet!

First it's the Internet, next it's the rest of the world!

But that's cool, I didn't know there were that manny searches for knitting.

Oh yes, I commandeered a subway car this morning (not really, but there was lots staring at the two circulars).

You can TiVo Canadian TV from the US? If this some kind of networking trick?

That's pretty nifty, isn't it?? We're going to make the world a warm and fuzzy place, one stop at a time!

I think it's spelled "technorati".

Strange... I thought technorati was for academic blogs... but then, I haven't really looked at it too closely.

Yay for knitting! :)

How very interesting. . . we are not alone!!!!!

Posted by: sedie at October 20, 2005 11:03 AM

Knitting rocks!

Here's the URL for the Technorati website, if anyone wants to blog surf:

http://www.technorati.com/

if you use moveabletype, you can have it ping technorati everytime you post a new entry and technorati will index your blog for links that use rel="" in the anchor tag. it's a really brilliant feature and i use it everyday! when i link to other knit bloggers or patterns etc., i use such tags as rel="knit knitting blog" or rel="knit knitting patterns yarn". it's a great way to drive traffic to your site and other knitters as well.

we knitters will rule the world one day. i'm sure of it!

Posted by: gleek at October 20, 2005 11:17 AM

Slowly but surely we are taking over....:-)

Posted by: Janine at October 20, 2005 11:18 AM

About a year ago I was at the blogging company moveabletype and the sales guy says, "Do you believe it, the most popular type of blog 2nd only to politics is knitting." Heck yeah I believe it!

Posted by: nona at October 20, 2005 11:30 AM

Bahahaaa....resistance is futile....you will be assimilated....

Posted by: Kathy at October 20, 2005 11:57 AM

Knitting beats Star Wars... wow!

Posted by: Dorothee at October 20, 2005 12:20 PM

I keep telling my husband this knitting thing really isn't unsusal, maybe now he'll believe me...

Our plan to take over the world is proceeding apace...

"Knitting always comes up in the top 10, which I find kind of interesting ... "

Muggles.

Rise, knitting Sisters, Brothers! Rise and take what is yours! We shall take over the blogosphere!

Posted by: Cassa at October 20, 2005 2:55 PM

We're in the top 10 because we SO totally rock!

Posted by: Nik at October 20, 2005 4:14 PM

Heck yeah I believe it! I still haven't read a blog that wasn't about knitting... What else could be interesting enough to want to show and tell about on a daily basis?

Posted by: Jen at October 20, 2005 8:43 PM

Nah, Colleen, the G4 network in America (and on our RCN digital cable), buys episodes of the Canadian tv show. PS - That's the same network that bought up hubby's favorite channel, Tech TV, then killed all the best geek shows (like the original "Call for Help") and instead brought non-stop blabbing about video games.

Andrea, I just copied the transcripts of the show from their website. No idea how Technorati is spelled, but man, you'd think THEY could get it right, huh?!

Thanks for the links, Mary, and the info, Gleek!

Yeah, Nona, my webmaster is good friends with the MovableType people and they know all about us. Along with the Catholic blogs, the knitters are like one of the biggest group of "themed blogs" using MovableType.

Ha, ha, Ruth, good one! :)

ruby on rails, it's a programming language like PERL (RUBY) and Rails is a framework, so Ruby running on the rails framework. It's for making bad ass web applications.

How funny you should post this, I watched that episode last week! I love Call For Help & have my fiance a little hooked as well. Yes, Amber Mac's comment made me chuckle & peeved at the same time. Of course knitting always comes up, why shouldn't it? Geez, Amber! LOL
