happy halloween from thing one and thing two

Oh, they were excited!

B actually said "I'm Thing One. Now I can bump around the house!" Uh oh, what have I gotten myself into?!

Don't they just look like they're about to go cause some trouble?

My Cat in the Hat "costume" was a little less literal. I got the colors right though.

Trick or Treat!

The Things were a huge hit in the neighborhood. When a group of 11 year-old boys in Scream costumes spontaneously declared "those are the BEST costumes", I took that as a real compliment. A similarly-aged cowgirl passed S and said appreciatively, "nice hair!" S responded, "no, it's a wig."

This is your thing on too much candy. Any questions?

They came home with baskets filled to the brim. And crashed.

The costumes are fantastic! Congrats on a successful halloween!

may i be the first to say, the things at the door are just completely perfect!

Posted by: e at October 31, 2005 9:48 PM

I have never had a Hallowe'en that didn't necessitate mittens, never mind snowpants, parka, boots...going as Hermione today I wore nylons, two pairs of wool knee socks, thick boxers, the skirt, long sleeved shirt, buttoned shirt, sweater, mitts, and my robe. And I was still really cold.

The only reason I'd ever want to live in the states so that I could wear a Hallowe'en costume the way it's meant to be worn!

Posted by: Karlie at October 31, 2005 9:49 PM

Those costumes really are the best costumes I've ever seen! My 3 year old would not even put his on, boy am I glad I decided not to make one this year.

Your boys are adorable!

Posted by: Heather's Knits at October 31, 2005 9:50 PM

Trust me, Karlie, we're not used to this sort of weather on Halloween! But my boys have been so lucky - for the last three years we've had a warm spell right on Halloween. It's been great getting to see all the kids' costumes unobscured by giant coats and mittens and stuff. Hooray for good Halloween weather!

Posted by: alison at October 31, 2005 9:53 PM

Those really are the BEST costumes. They are too adorable.

Congrats on having the best dressed kids this Halloween!

Posted by: Heather at October 31, 2005 9:55 PM

Them's some adorable Things you've got there, Miss Alison! And they look as though they could cause as much trouble as the originals!

Posted by: Erica at October 31, 2005 9:55 PM

I am lost for words! I wish your boys could have knocked at my door! They look AMAZING! And those grins. WOW! Congratulations, Alison, two things very well done!!!

The BEST costumes ever! What will you ever do to top this next year?

Posted by: Beth at October 31, 2005 10:16 PM

Just as I expected! They look terrific! If they had come to my door looking like that I would have emptied my candy bowl into their pumpkins. Too cute!

Posted by: allison at October 31, 2005 10:18 PM

I think you're right, Beth, there's really no point in trying to top these. As a Halloween costume-maker, I believe I've peaked!

Posted by: alison at October 31, 2005 10:19 PM

impressive work - your poor fingers must be down to the bone by now. the boys look so thrilled with their costumes - the envy of the neighborhood for sure. what a great mom!

Posted by: Jackie at October 31, 2005 10:52 PM

Too cute! I actually saw two boys as Thing 1 and Thing tongiht while trick or treating. Sure you didn't come to Va. for the candy?!

Posted by: Liz at October 31, 2005 10:57 PM

They're just so cute!! And the costumes are absolutely awesome!

Adorable! Those costumes are perfect, and the joy on their faces says it all.

----------
As Halloween night crept along to the end,
nothing disturbed the doorways but a breeze or a wind.

The treats were checked to be fit for consumption
so all little boys and girls could have something.

When it seemed there were no more tricks to be done,
Thing 2 leaned over and said to Thing 1…

When mothers were chosen in that place where this happens,
we were the luckiest chaps out of dozens and dozens!

oops...Dr. Seuss

Posted by: Bliss at October 31, 2005 11:50 PM

How cute, Bliss - thanks! (And thanks for being a sock savior too - I heard that your new pal loved the socks!)

Posted by: alison at November 1, 2005 12:17 AM

Super work. I've been watching your progess and they are just fabulous. Me, myself and I are a little craftier with the cardboard, paint and glue.

Posted by: Ann at November 1, 2005 12:18 AM

Too cute. My little guys looked like that last picture at the end of the night, too. Well, aside from the blue hair ;-)

Posted by: Kathy at November 1, 2005 12:44 AM

Good for you, Ann. I have to admit that one reason why I didn't go the store-bought t-shirt + fabric paint route is that I'm just not that crafty!

Posted by: alison at November 1, 2005 12:47 AM

"No, it's a wig." So funny and so adorable!! You definitely win the best costume prize and fastest knitter prize!! Lots of fun to have great costumes and a great mom. :)

Posted by: Laura at November 1, 2005 12:55 AM

cute!!! those intarsia designs are Seussian perfection. S and B look so happy; i'm sure they'll be dating back to this memory for years to come.

Posted by: meowgirl at November 1, 2005 12:59 AM

Posted by: jo at November 1, 2005 5:55 AM

We don't know much about Dr Seuss here in Sweden, but I have seen the movie with Mike Meyers... :) And your "things" are much, much cuter! Nice knitting!

Those costumes ROCK! And compliments from pre-teens? Priceless! Just amazing knitting - AMAZING!!!!! And you have to love the fact that your kids love their shirts and will wear them waaaay beyond Halloween.

I'm with Dena -- the too much candy picture IS Halloween. Completely timeless.

Posted by: Joan at November 1, 2005 7:30 AM

What a smashing success! The compliments from the 11-year-olds must have been quite a thrill.

Posted by: Songbird at November 1, 2005 7:35 AM

Posted by: Rachel H at November 1, 2005 7:54 AM

aww, they are the best costumes i have ever seen. your boys are so lucky!

Posted by: blossom at November 1, 2005 8:09 AM

Posted by: Andrea at November 1, 2005 9:27 AM

Holy cow! Those costumes rock! I can not believe you did them so fast!

Posted by: Karen at November 1, 2005 9:33 AM

The costumes are fantastic! Congrats on a great job. Your sons have just the right amount of charm and mischief in their eyes to go with the costumes!

Posted by: Kathode Ray Tube at November 1, 2005 9:35 AM

The things looked just dandy,
All ready to get some candy.

When they knocked on the door
Grown-ups couldn't resist a roar,
Or the urge to hand over the store.

Thing 1 & Thing 2 were glad to have their pick,
But sad that they could play no trick.
Oh well, I guess that's why they ate themselves sick!

Posted by: anmiryam at November 1, 2005 9:44 AM

Amaaaaaaazing. Jaw-droppingly amazing.

Posted by: neysa at November 1, 2005 9:45 AM

Awesome! What an odessey to see you create these costumes! The boys are super lucky! And hooray that they had such a good time in them.

Posted by: Jen at November 1, 2005 9:54 AM

It looks like your Thing 2 had a little too much "Chocolate Thun-da" there at the end!

Posted by: Christy at November 1, 2005 10:01 AM

I love the costumes!

Posted by: Liz at November 1, 2005 10:03 AM

Wow. Just wow. Any chance I could convince you to knit MY costume next year? *bats eyelashes* ;-)

Posted by: Sneaksleep at November 1, 2005 10:22 AM

Seriously, if the 11-yr-olds were complimenting them, those costumes are the ultimate in coolness. But the happy smiles on the boys' faces say it all! Fabulous!!

Posted by: Carrie at November 1, 2005 10:41 AM

Your Things will remember these costumes! My 13 year old still remembers the year I made him a Ninja Turtle costume (out of a discarded kiddie pool and some yard goods -- couldn't afford the boughten kind), and he was about your boys' age.

Posted by: Judy at November 1, 2005 11:06 AM

You really outdid yourself on those costumes. Really! :-) And they even fit well, which Halloween costumes so seldom do.

I hope they'll wear those sweaters after the holiday, too. :-)

Posted by: Beth S. at November 1, 2005 11:26 AM

Posted by: sedie at November 1, 2005 3:19 PM

Woohoo... for the Things! And for mummy... I have been watching with baited breath to see if you finished on time. It absoultey tipped it down with rain on my two. They looked like drowned rats.

Posted by: noonie at November 1, 2005 5:12 PM

Just beyond cool -- I feel shame for buying my little girl's costume. I LOVE THESE!!

That is hands down the best use of fun-fur ever.

I knew there had to be some reason they kept making the stuff.

Great job!

Posted by: Beak Knits at November 1, 2005 11:33 PM

Wow!! And how on earth did you get the red pants to match the red shirts? As an accused red-clasher, I'm mad impressed. :-)

Happy post-Hallowe'en!

Posted by: susan at November 2, 2005 3:14 AM

Soooo CUTE!! Great jobs, Alison. They are going to remember this Halloween really well. Now, what can you do to top this off next year? It is my predicament as well. Better start thinking soon! :)
