koowaid

This dyeing with Kool Aid thing is way too much fun. This week the boys helped me dye the big hanks for their hats.

Red for S.

Yellow for B.

Okay, now watch how the yarn sucks up all the color. This. Is. So. Cool!

This was the Crystal Lite orange, by the way. It ended up making a yellow that is PERFECT for B's jacket!

Ready to begin knitting....

That is SO cool!!! And what a perfect match - WOW!

The pictures of the yarn soaking up color are great! I didn't expect it to be so dramatic!!!

Posted by: Mandy at November 10, 2005 10:03 AM

Did you just use white yarn to start with? I love the colors you chose. You really used Kool Aid?

Posted by: Maggie at November 10, 2005 10:03 AM

Wow! Your colors seem so bold, did you use tons of kool aid for the red!? I never thought about trying other powdered drinks, so smart! ;)

Oh, so Crystal Lite does work...hmmm, I will have to try it out. I got a very golden yellow by using Mango Koolaid.

Posted by: Isela at November 10, 2005 10:13 AM

That yellow is an unbelievably perfect match! My favorite part of dyeing is watching the yarn soak up the color too.

Posted by: Diana at November 10, 2005 10:23 AM

Wow! So vibrant!!! I'm definately getting bitten by the color your own yarn bug ;) it's popping up all over blogland...and I thought I was immune, but I feel it coming on!

Thanks for the info on the yellow. I would have never thought to try crystal light orange.

Posted by: Kara at November 10, 2005 10:25 AM

Whoa, that yellow is an *idential* match for that jacket. Great job B!

Posted by: Colleen at November 10, 2005 10:32 AM

That is a perfect match! Good dye job!

Posted by: MA at November 10, 2005 11:23 AM

Those turned out so well! I bet they smell delicious, too :)

Posted by: Allison at November 10, 2005 11:25 AM

Oh hell. I'm a party pooper.

I think the yellow is too perfect a match. You won't even notice the hat because it blends with the coat too much.

Posted by: LaurieM at November 10, 2005 11:27 AM

Well, whether it's perfect or too perfect a match, I love the *shade* of the yellow, with or without the coat!

Cyrstal Lite Orange, you say? Have to get some of that to suppliment my KoolAid stash. Wonderful colors!

Posted by: Kathy at November 10, 2005 11:49 AM

I can't wait to try that! What a great way to get the boys to participate in the knitting!

Posted by: Julia at November 10, 2005 11:54 AM

I came over here to suggest a yellow for you to try, but I see it turned out perfectly already. In case you ever want to try something different, though...

I've recently used paste cake-decorating food coloring that I bought at Michael's. Great saturated colors. You just get blue, red, yellow and green, but you can mix lots of stuff from there, and a little goes a long way.

You have me wanting to try dyeing now! The packets of kool-aid are just calling me from the top shelf.

Posted by: LeAnne at November 10, 2005 12:15 PM

It is quite fun. . . I may have to make some time this weekend to dye some of my own! The colors came out wonderfully! Happy knitting.

I've always wanted to try dyeing my own yarn, now that I've seen what you've done, I just can't put it off anymore. I have a stash of kool-aid, now I just need the yarn. BTW, those colors turned out GREAT!

I want to try that with my boys! that looks sooo cool

Posted by: Monique at November 10, 2005 12:29 PM

So I guess my sticky guess was all wrong. I'm glad to hear it. That yellow is just so perfect, what are the chances?

Posted by: Vicki at November 10, 2005 8:21 PM

I'll have to try this with my 3 kiddos. They really want to try dyeing yarn. Is there a certain amount that you need to add or just what ever you think? I love it.

Diane, I just followed the directions at Knitty.com. I did add more of the yellow than the instructions suggested, since the color was pretty pale. I also added some vinegar the second time around, as someone had recommended it (in the comments when I first posted) even when using the Kool Aid.

Have fun!!

I can't wait to try this myself. Congrats on that great color match with the yellow, that seems a really hard color to create!

Posted by: Gina at November 11, 2005 12:15 AM

That yellow looks great! I'll have to try Crystal Lite, too.

Posted by: Monica at November 11, 2005 12:29 AM

The orange Crystal Lite coming out such a bright yellow is amazing. Thanks for posting the pictures, I'm definitely adding that to my lengthy list of things to try!

My kids and I did some Koolaid dyeing this summer, too, and it was so easy and fun! Around here, we have to stick with nontoxic stuff, too. One pair of socks we made out of it still smells mildly fruity, too. Lovely yarn!

Posted by: Jenny in NC at November 11, 2005 10:48 AM

That's so cool! Although, I'm a little scared to drink Kool Aid now. Imagine what it does to your innards!

Posted by: katie at November 11, 2005 1:38 PM

That *does* look like fun! I haven't touched dyeing because I always thought it was messy. Your photos make it look so easy...

Posted by: MJ at November 11, 2005 5:58 PM

This looks so much like fun. And how the yellow matches the jacket! I looked at the knitty tutorial and can't believe that it is so simple. When the result looks so sophisticated and professional! I really want to try this one day. Thanks for posting those pictures.
