weasley's weekly wizard wheezes
Wow, there's been a lot of weasley knitting going on! I guess that's because the movie premiere is coming soon. (6 days for us in America!)
Anna finished gryffindor socks and a Slytherin scarf (the scarf is crocheted, folks)
Dani finished her HP scarf a while ago (she knits so fast, who can keep up?)
and Emily finished her HiP scarf before I could even add her to the knitalong list!
Janell is already wearing her HP scarf
Julie finished her Azkaban scarf (and her first sock!)
MA finished her Gryffindor scarf and has started a Hufflepuff scarf (the colors look great)
Manda just finished this cute London Beanie in Gryffindor colors and plans to knit matching mittens and a weasley next
Margot has finished 3 Gryffindor scarves and is casting on for another!
Monique also just joined the knitalong and has finished a Gryffindor House Scarf
Stacy, "the coolest aunt in the entire world", made an Azkaban scarf for her niece which she wore for Halloween
And elsewhere, Alex's Ravenclaw scarf is long enough for a real picture and there are lots of newcomers like Sharlyn who couldn't hold out any longer and will be making a weasley for her son, Ann, who'll be making a HiP scarf, and Spring who's making a scarf for the movie and a weasley for her son.

I, however, have come to a grinding halt with my weasley. Front and back are finished and sewn together. (I know I'm supposed to wait to set in the sleeves before I seam up the two body pieces, but I always need to know how the body will fit!). Well, it fits fine, but with the roll, it's a little short. Not crazy short, not cropped, but a little too short for it to just be a sweater I can wear with any pants. I decided to try adding ribbing like there is at the bottom of the sleeves to the bottom edge. I did that on the back and now, unrolled, plus two inches of ribbing, the thing's wicked long. I'm totally conflicted. What do you all think??

I like the roll, but that's just me. I always look better in something slightly cropped. The color of that sweater is wicked awesome!
BTW, I finished the last set of yellow stripes on my HP PoA scarf last night, got about 20 rows left before blocking. Sorry I did not email you -- is it too late to add me in to your update?
I'm on the other side of the fence ... I always prefer things a bit long and oversized. Could you cut the difference, pick up and knit an extra inch or two and just let it roll?
what about doing a purl row and then more straight st st? i'm suggesting the purl row so you don't see the half-stitch jog.
i think the problem is that the sweater is the right length if it was ribbed, so adding on more length and letting it roll should make it the right length once it's rolled.
Hmmm...I too like the roll, but I think the ribbing is more comfortable...I guess I'm with Ruth. Add a little more (rolls always unroll a little with gravity, don't they?) and let it roll, baby.
i think the rib looks very nice, we would hav to see pics to truley judge!
if you add the purl row and then more st stitch that was sugested you could always then fold it under and hem it.. that is what they do with some fair isle sweaters
I was thinking hem it, also, then you get the added length from unrolling the edge, without adding more length from the ribbing. EZ suggests decreasing by 10% in the first knit row to avoid a flare.
My Hufflescarf is actually finished, and there's a picture of it up on my blog.
As for the roll, I've always been partial to it...but I like the ribbing as well - I think I'd have to see it on to really make a decision.
Just to clarify, the socks I made are knitted -- not crocheted. The scarf, however, is crocheted.
As for your sweater, I like the roll. I agree with what Ruth said.
Can't wait to see your finished sweater! It's going to be awesome!!
I kind of like the roll myself, have you tried just picking out a couple of rows and knitting down, I don't think you would have to purl a row, wouldn't that half stitch jog be hidden in the seam? You have to do something to make it wearable, it is too lovely not to.
I always seam my side seams before setting sleeves, unless it is a drop shoulder and I rarely if ever do a drop shoulder. It is the sewer in me, I think they set in more nicely.
What about some seed stitch edging? only 4 or 5 rows would stop the rolling, and maybe give it just a touch of length. I guess maybe you could change the edges of the sleeves to match....
How about ripping out the ribbing so that it is only about 1/2", then knitting stockinette for an inch or two to get the roll back. I've seen this done on collars sometimes. It seems to "limit" the roll so that it doesn't roll back to far, it would cinch the bottom of the sweater so that it doesn't hang too loosely, yet it still gives the look of a rolled hem. The ribbing would not be obvious, because it would be partially/mostly covered by the rolling.
I love your blog. So many great ideas! My two boys and I did some Kool-Aid dying for hats this week, and we had a great time!
You can continue the sockinette for a little while with smaller needles, and that will help keep the roll from traveling too far up.
I have sweater envy.
Are the sleeves rolled? If so, I think it looks a little weird with a ribbed hem, and vice-versa. Personally, I think ribbed hem and cuff make it look more like a traditional "school" sweater. A couple of inches longer has never been a problem for me--especially in cold weather!
I kinda like the ribbing. Am I weird. But be sure to put ribbing on the sleeves too.
Will blocking it control the roll enough at the original length so that it doesn't roll too much? I like the rolled look. The other suggestion I like is to knit ribbing a couple rows down then more stockinette to roll and hide the ribbing.
I think you should try to make the roll longer, or change where the ribbing is. Good luck! maybe I will knit myself a Weasley for myself next christmas, I am barley finishing mitten as it is with all this other knitting I have to do!! Good luck,a nd have fun!
I usually prefer no ribbing, but I think on that sweater the ribbing looks great!
I like the ribbing too! I tend to prefer longer sweaters to cropped ones, especially when it gets cold :o) The "H" looks awesome, too!
we, over at Continental Knitters, would like to invite ya'll to our group!
Thanks for your consideration!

Just for clarification, the "real" weasley has a rolled edge on the body but a couple of inches of ribbing on the sleeves.
Thanks for the ideas, everyone! I had considered just adding a few inches of stockinette and effectively moving the roll down, but was worried that the line where I picked up stitches would be visible. I love the idea of a hem though. Why didn't I think of that?! I think I'll try the roll and if it seems like that line is visible, I'll go back and do the purl row over that line and then a hem.
I knew you all would help!! :)
Oh, I'm such a slacker! Right, I've yet to do anything serious on the Hermione GoF sweater, but. I did win/purchase one of the Gryffindor Sock yarns that Dani offered up a couple of weeks ago and I'm at the heel of my first sock. No pics yet. And your sweater, looks fantasic. The colors really look good together; mine did the same thing...it's not too short, but I'd like it to be longer. I think the ribbing looks nice.
I think the ribbing looks perfectly nice, and far better to have a hem you don't love than to have an entire sweater that is too short. Interestingly, Isabelle's Weasley back seemed far too short as well, so I added several inches to it, and we'll see how it all goes.
Yeah, I like the idea of adding stockinette for a longer roll. I'm almost finished my Gryff scarf, although I think I'm going to shorten it by two repeats, making it 12 instead of 14 bars. I'm working in the middle of the 11th trapped bars. On October 19th on my blog there's an old picture of the start of my scarf. It'll be done for the premiere....Sean's however, will not. He's doing his thesis year and has just been too busy.
Hmm. I like the way the ribbing looks, and I'd always rather have a longer sweater than one that's going to be too short ... Hmmm.
It looks great, and I'm sure whichever way you choose to finish it, it will be fantastic! :)
I like the ribbing, but I always want my sweaters to be a bit longer (so that my tummy doesn't show when I raise my arms!)
I'd like to Weasley along with y'all - I just bought my yarn for a HiP scarf today!
I really like the ribbing. Perhaps you could model it with the roll vs. ribbing - that might help us determine if it is really too long....
I really like the roll. I think I'd try to keep the roll some how (like some people have already said). I'll have to knit one up some time.
BTW, I'm currently working on the 13th trapped bar in my Hufflepuff scarf! I'm so excited that I'll be done before the 18th.
The orange (ginger) is making such a great Weasley!
Could you pick up for a hemmed edge? It looks like the sweater gets a good amount of length just from being unrolled.
