knitting with kool aid

From kool aid cakes to kool aid caps.

B's yellow yarn was first. (You didn't think that "Thing One" was going to wait, did you? Actually, we're still trying to perfect the color of S's yarn so it will better match his coat.) I made no gauge swatch and just guessed at the numbers. With a 1x1 rib on the bottom, I rationalized, it'd probably fit anyone! I added some white stripes to copy those on the jacket and volia: a perfect fit and a perfect match.

B said, "I love my hat. I'm going to wear it to keep my hair warm." This was in the house this morning while he was still in his pajamas. He pulled it on and padded off to play the Dora boardgame with his brother. In his hat.

I'll have to ask for the hat back again at some point, because it's not completely finished. It still needs a lining. Hubby's not convinced that wind won't blow through a knitted hat, so they need to be lined to get his stamp of approval. But that can wait. B's approval is enough for me today.

Kool hat! I like the stripes. Does S's jacket have stripes too?

I like the hats--I've just finished a PoA Harry Potter scarf for my son, and will make a quick hat to match. This may seem elementary to you, but I wondered what you do to line the hats? Thanks, Jen

I remember you used Crystal Lite Orange for the yellow, what did you use for the red? The colors both came out so nice. And the hats are just as cute as can be!

What a funny hubby! Nothing wrong with an extra warm hat though.

The stripes really tie it all together. I'm amazed at how you got the yellow to match. And the red is pretty close already. Such lucky things, I mean boys!

Such a great match to the coat! What color kool-aid did you use to get that color yarn. It's FAB!!!!

I like the red also (it's my fav color). Let me know what flavor that was as well. Tee hee.

Great hat! It matches the jacket so well. :)

Love the Kool Aid results - how did you match those jackets so perfectly?? I find I have little Kool Aid Control. My favorite is the little girl hat - might copy you with some leftover bulky pink stuff I have around - the flower is adorable!

Sorry to have missed yesterday - will miss the next 2 also. Do you need D Bliss back? I can send it to you - email me theacolman@yahoo.com! Am going to PO tomorrow so no problem. Otherwise will be there the first wk in Dec.

Love the stripes, really ties in to the jacket so perfectly! I'm also wondering how you will line the hat. The first hat I knit for hubby looked great, but didn't stop ANY wind. He loves to wear it off season, though, even in the house. :) He's allergic to wool so his hats aren't going to be as warm, but a liner might help.

Adorable hat! I was going to have my son help me dye some yarn yesterday so we can make scarves for a couple of his autism therapists, but it was a yucky day and we didn't make it out of the house to the store. Got a lot done on his Harry Potter sweater, though! It'll be totally done tonight and I'll post pictures on my blog tomorrow. I'm also thinking about doing a Gryffindor scarf for myself (definitely not before the movie starts this Friday, though!), but I'm not totally sure.

The hat is cute. It's going to be hard to line a knitted hat and have it still be stretchable. I've rarely seen knitted hat with lining for this very reason.

Did the boys pick out their jacket colors? I always wonder at the favorite colors of small folk :-)

Posted by: Kathy at November 14, 2005 11:33 AM

That is one cute hat, and he likes it! What more can one want.

Posted by: Jennifer at November 14, 2005 11:35 AM

Wow, what a fantastic match!

PowerStretch would make an awesome lining, I would think, and the Malden Mills factory outlet is in Lawrence, MA.

Maybe they'd have better colors in the store than they have online.

Lining is a great idea. I just made a felted bucket hat, and I'm a little worried that the wind will go through. And it's a little big...

What a cute hat and it's so great that he's wearing it around the house. You just know he loves it. And his hair is going to be so warm.

Seldom have I loved something so yellow so much. It looks great! Can't wait to see thing two's!

How is it that everything you touch immediately turns into something adorable? It's like the Midas touch, except with needles and benefits, instead of gold and comeuppance. They look great, and I am filing koolaid yarn under "Project to do with girls after holiday knitting is done."

Your dyed yarns are looking great! So are the hats.

Love it!
Would you mind sending me another Blogger invite for the Holiday Knitting blog? For some reason I'm getting an error message when I try to respond. Thanks!

Are you going to knit a lining or sew in a fabric one? My sister in law just got a silk hat to go under the hat I knit for her daughter...I am thinking about lining my hats too but don't know the process...would love to see what you do...

Love your blog too!

I can completely identify with your son wanting to wear his hat around the house...I finished my chulu hat on Friday and wore it all afternoon! I'm currently knitting a hat for my dad for Christmas. It seems a little thin to me and am wondering if it will be warm enough. I would love to hear how you line your hats since it may be necessary for this one.

Those came out perfect Alison! That yellow is the exact same color as the jacket.. you weren't kidding! I just sent you an email about the Holiday knitalong too.. I need others to modivate me :)

The had is lovely!
Sounds like your hubby is everybit the "yideshe mumma" that my husband is.
Than again, it does get pretty chilly in your part of the world. My son takes his shoes and socks off when I pick up from day care…is often barefoot at the park, even now, I figure there is no point arguing over it, when his feet get cold he'll put them on, just like in the summer he wore his sandels when he realized the pavement was too hot. My husband though...he wraps him up real good.

You are an inspiration to me! How do you have the time to do all this knitting?? I have two little ones and they run me ragged!

Love those hats. They look warm to me.

Posted by: Donna at November 15, 2005 7:10 AM

Hubby is right - the wind will just blow right through a knitted hat that is just one layer thick. I have a commercially bought hat (from REI) that is a Chullah style with polar fleece around the ears - makes a huge difference. I also have a pattern from Elann which is based on the EZ hat pattern where you knit a stockinette tube with a hat top & then pick up stitches from the cast on edge & knit another identical hat. You push one thru the other & end up with a hat that is double thick & quadruple thick over the ears. Knit in sock yarn, it is quite warm. But you don't always need a hat that is that warm.

Great Kool Aid caps! Perfect matches to the jackets.

So cute - keep his hair warm.

I hope they ALWAYS love "Mom's" knitting.

Great idea on the matching stripes, it really goes perfectly with his jacket. Ah, to have a vision and make it reality!

Posted by: anmiryam at November 16, 2005 9:28 AM

Would double knit work to block the wind?

Posted by: Erica at November 16, 2005 5:45 PM

What a cute story to go with a really cool cap and jacket - and for a cool boy too! It reminds me of some kool aid laying around somewere. Have to try dying sometime.
