home to roost

Look what came home with me from mom's.

jess is back

It's my mom's jess! She never wore it - just didn't end up fitting the way she wanted. It seemed such a shame for it to just be sitting under her bed, so I asked if I couldn't maybe have it back. I had wanted to make another one for myself and remembered how much I liked the one I made for her. Now that it's back, I'm remembering how I wanted to make mine shorter.

jess is long

And how I would have changed the armholes and neckline a bit, so it's not quite so wide.

jess is big

What to do? Should this be my first candidate for the upcoming new year's rip-along (can you even frog this angora stuff?)?? Or is it still kinda cool and comfy just like it is? Anybody?

I would wear it as it is (comfy/casual)! But if you won't wear it, you should probably frog it.

Posted by: Stephanie at November 27, 2005 11:51 AM

I would keep it the way it is. It is a great snuggle up on the couch sweater.

Posted by: Heather at November 27, 2005 12:02 PM

I might use it as a longer jacket worn over another thinner sweater when it gets really cold....I like the layered look and it looks great on you...my experience is Angora is not easy to frog....

Posted by: mimi at November 27, 2005 12:07 PM

It looks really good the way it is, and I bet it's incredibly comfy to wear. I'd leave it alone.

Posted by: Kathy at November 27, 2005 12:20 PM

Yes, I like it as it is too, it's really cute and soft looking, and will work as a top layer.

Posted by: Karlie at November 27, 2005 12:33 PM

I like it as is. Everyone needs a good slouchy sweater for cold days and nights.

Posted by: Jennifer at November 27, 2005 12:34 PM

I would wear it as it is, but make sure *you'll* wear it. :)

Posted by: Andrea at November 27, 2005 12:48 PM

I vote for leaving it the way it is too, unless you really feel strongly that you wouldn't wear it as it is. It looks great on you. You could also use it for outdoors on days that weren't as cold, and weren't rainy or windy .

Posted by: Norah at November 27, 2005 12:55 PM

I like it the way it is, too. If you want to tweak it, I'd say you could do some minor surgery (sleeve length), but I'd forgo the major stuff (armholes and neckline) and just have a comfy sweater.

Posted by: Sarah at November 27, 2005 12:58 PM

It looks very cosy and comfy, I should leave it as it is.

Posted by: Marie-france at November 27, 2005 1:07 PM

I agree with everybody else.
I could see a pretty broach holding the sweater closed up top (are there buttonholes?) With something form-fitting underneath it won't look slouchy at all.
I think there is too much knitting possibility in the world to waste time frogging something that has so much beauty the way it is. Its a lovely sweater.

Posted by: Abby at November 27, 2005 1:22 PM

First of all, it looks fab with those orange pants. Having recently purchased orange pants, I will keep in mind the olive green/orange connection.

On to your question. I would give Jess a probationary period. Keep it around until January and see if you wear it. If yes, don't frog. If not-so-much, then reuse, recycle, renew.

Posted by: claudia at November 27, 2005 2:31 PM

The queen of Fix-Its must fix! I am serious. Its would be great for the fix along and its a very nice sweater, the design is really fun and it would be silly to waste the yarn--it wants to be Jess!

Plus, it would inspire the rest of us.

I have a different fix planned, I'm going to frog the sweater I made for my Granmother who recently died. She wore the cardigan all the time--daily rotation with her other favorite cardigan--and she would want us to use the yarn. I'm trying to decide....dye the yarn and make something big like Eris for me or dye the yarn in bits and use it to make hats/mittens/scarves for the kids (I love the way your two helped with the dyeing--my crew would dig it too!)

I have a month to decide...

Posted by: suzanne at November 27, 2005 2:42 PM

I agree too- the sweater looks wonderful and comfy. I would keep it just the way it is!! It looks really nice on you.

Posted by: patti at November 27, 2005 3:07 PM

I think it looks comfy too. If you wanted it a little shorter, did you consider fulling it very slightly? I did this with a couple of sweaters that were too long for my taste but fit otherwise.

Posted by: Joan at November 27, 2005 3:33 PM

I actually love it as is, but you are the one that has to wear it. Will you wear it?

Posted by: jo at November 27, 2005 3:42 PM

For what my 2 cents worth is worth (huh?)I say that it looks like a FAB lounging around when it's cold jacket. I like the longer sleeve look. I've always thought that that look was kinda cute. Like you are wearing your much bigger boyfriend's clothes, y'know? Plus, if it get REALLY cold, you have enough room to be able to wear it over many layers. It's just so lovely and I don't know how well angora would frog. But as previously commented, ultimately, it is YOU who will be wearing it. If it isn't going to be used, then you should change it. That would be a waste for such a lovely yarn.

Posted by: knittingnurse at November 27, 2005 3:46 PM

I really like it and I'd keep it as is, unless you know you just wouldn't wear it at all. It looks so comfy.

Posted by: Heather at November 27, 2005 4:19 PM

I think it looks terribly comfy as is, but I'm not the fashionista that some are :)

Posted by: Vicki at November 27, 2005 4:26 PM

I just love it the way it is: cool and comfy...

Posted by: francoise at November 27, 2005 4:32 PM

I think it's cool and comfy just the way it is. I'd keep it this way. But, since it's yours and not mine, I agree with the folks who say give it a probationary period of at least till January. Wear it, see if the fit grows on you or just annoys you.

Posted by: Rachel H at November 27, 2005 4:32 PM

i think it's great like it is.

i'd be a bit concerned about how the angora would stand up to frogging, but if Jess is going to languish in your closet as is, then give it a go!

Posted by: jody at November 27, 2005 4:35 PM

It looks beautiful as it is. You are the only one that can really judge though! :)

BTW, I don't think I commented, but your Thing costumes were absolutely brilliant. :)

Posted by: Mandy Moore at November 27, 2005 4:40 PM

I frogged mine, almost at once, it is a badly fitting, good looking cardi..

Gosh, I hate to be among the few dissenters. Frog it! I mean, if like Claudia says, you actually wear it and it becomes a part of your wardrobe by January, then keep, but I'm thinking that it won't.

Posted by: Teresa C at November 27, 2005 5:14 PM

I'd leave it alone, too, but then, I tend to think that once something is done, it's DONE. Ripping a current project that's not working right is one thing, but it just seems kind of sad to take an innocent garment, perfectly nice and minding its own business, and pulling it to shreds. But that's just me . . . (grin) It does look cozy!

Posted by: --Deb at November 27, 2005 5:44 PM

I like the slightly oversized look, but would add a showy button and maybe some embroidery on the lower sleeves.

Posted by: Erica at November 27, 2005 5:59 PM

I think it looks great the way it is! Nice and comfy...we all need a sweater like that!

I say it is a keeper....it looks v. cozy and comfy. The perfect sweater to wear indoors when you need some knitwear that gives TLC. If you don't want it, send it to me!

Posted by: elisabeth at November 27, 2005 7:50 PM

When I go back and read your comments and those of others when you first completed Jess one thing stands out in my mind is how much you LOVED the sweater. The only thing I would maybe do is to shorten the sleeves. It is cozy and beautiful.Truly.

Posted by: emmy at November 27, 2005 8:08 PM

Just the way it is!! It looks so comfy and snuggly! I love the color too.

Posted by: Lisa at November 27, 2005 8:11 PM

I would keep it. It looks super comfy and would be great for a lazy, cold, Sunday afternoon :) Love all the pictures from the parade too!

Posted by: Dani at November 27, 2005 10:17 PM

It llok absolutely great for cuddling on the couch! :o) KEEP it, the green is so beautiful and I don't think it would be great to frog. Make som neat cuffs on the sleeves, maybe just by folding them up and it it absolutely my kind of sweater! :o)

Hi from Denmark - Bettina

Posted by: Bettina at November 28, 2005 3:16 AM

well..since your ar such a speedy knitter...i'd put it in the rip along...assuming that it's frogable.

Posted by: Orli at November 28, 2005 8:13 AM

Although I do agree with the others, it does look very cozy and comfy as a snuggle sweater, I have also owned those sweaters and NEVER wear them. They look/feel sloppy. How about giving it a washing and see if it sizes up a bit more to your liking?? would it perhaps shorten in both body and sleeves? just a thought....

Posted by: Susanne at November 28, 2005 8:49 AM

Hi Alson,
I think it looks a little big an you.
Gaby

Posted by: Gaby at November 28, 2005 8:52 AM

I'm all for probation and then, if needed, an all-out rip. It does look like it could be a comfy, slouchy sweater -- but do you wear those? How many do you have/need? Is that what you want for this? I think the mods you have in mind would make a super-great Jess for YOU.

Posted by: Vicki at November 28, 2005 9:24 AM

i say leave it! i think it looks great and would be awesome cute over a nice fitted turtleneck sweater for a mommy day out with the boys! but i'm no fashion guru. just a mom - always looking for ease and comfort in my clothes.

Posted by: rebecca at November 29, 2005 10:39 AM

If you love it but think it's too big, I say make the adjustments you need. Just think, what a life you're giving that sweater.

Posted by: Diane E. at November 30, 2005 6:54 PM

My 2 cents, even though you've probably made your decision. It looks great at that size, a nice jacket that can go slummy or elegant. I wouldn't change a thing, Alison!
