the most beautiful things I have ever knit

And it's all the in the yarn! I can't say enough good things about the Louisa Harding Kimono Angora. Really lovely colors, wonderfully soft - it just makes this simple little baby set so special.

Originally I had intened to make the angora booties from Last Minute Knitted Gifts, but it turns out that the kimono angora isn't quite fuzzy enough to hide the things I don't like about the booties (like the rectanglar duck foot shape, the pinched look in back where the three-needle bind off begins, the holes at the corners where the cuff begins, and the ladders on the sides from the double knitting technique). With super fuzzy angora, it's all good, but without the halo, it's no angel.

I searched through my patterns and it turns out that I already had the perfect bootie pattern, Fiber Trends CH36 "Baby Basics". Not only did it match the hat perfectly with stockinette stitch and cute little i-cord ties and everything, but the pattern is perfectly written. I don't think I'm ever using any other bootie pattern! And they're so sweet too.

Then there's the hat. I absolutely adore the hat. It's the Children's Cotton Hat from Last Minute Knitted Gifts.

Because it's from Last Minute Knitted Gifts, you know it's stylish, clever, and - yes, you know what's coming - it has an error in it. Oh yeah, an error and there's no correction for it on the errata page. In the middle and large sizes, there are an uneven number of holes to pull the i-cord through. An uneven number of holes means that one end will be outside and one end will be inside. And that no workie.

Here's the simple fix:

Cast on and follow pattern as written until eyelet rnd.
Work eyelet rnd as follows: K4 (6, 8), *yo, K2tog, K2; repeat from* to end.
Follow pattern as written to end.

Still, it makes a gol'darned beautiful hat. What are you gonna do?

(Again, I've got to say that I love this book. Most of the errors, like the eyelet round error above, are something that an intermediate to advanced knitter can work out for themselves once they are aware of the problem. It's beginners who I really worry about. The patterns are so simple, it seems to me that this book should be a great book for beginners. But sadly, with all the errors, I can't really recommend it for new knitters.)

Love them! And since i'm likely saving the striped sweater for my yet-to-be conceived, nonexistent, children, I think i have to make some booties and hats for friend's children. thanks also for the pattern correction!

Adorable baby set! Thanks for the info regarding the eyelet holes and the errata page for the book - I just received it for my birthday and wouldn't have known there were so many problems.

I too love that hat--but I did make it when I was a beginner, and ran into the eyelet problem. Because I didn't really know what I was doing, I thought I had made a stupid mistake, and blamed myself quite a bit.

Im with you, Alison--I love most patterns in that book, but wouldn't recommend it to a newby. I'm glad I can know go in now a) knowing that there are mistakes and b) being confident that I can fix them.

soooooo sweet!

The icord and your choice of yarns make these gifts precious!

So CUTE!!!!

Hi there, delurking (albeit a few weeks later than the official day!)

Wow, love that yarn! What a great use for it, too. Gotta get me that bootie pattern. I've made that LMKG hat three times now. The first time I made a small, so when I made it again in a medium, I was flabbergasted! I made the same fix. DOH on me for not emailing the authors right then.

Posted by: Laura(keet) at February 3, 2006 10:39 AM

I have to say it's the simple and critical errors that bother me the most. Yes, there's weirdness in the bootie pattern and I think my next pair is going to take on correcting it (I don't use the 100% angora she calls for, but the more cost-effective Anny Blatt Super Angora and/or another similar... Jolie, I think... where you can get 3 pair from a skein). Back to the point: I knitted the guitar from New Knits on the Block and there were a couple of major, very simple errors. Not only were there errors (one section has an incorrect number of stitches listed consistently throughout--an easy fix but potentially very confusing) but the pattern lacked some details shown in the photo. As a relatively experienced knitter, these details are almost more annoying because I could have spent the time to design my own, but instead I spent money to rely on a pattern, and now I can't.

Wait, I lost my point in all that complaining... my point is, these *should* be very easy to proofread out if you have a good technical editor. Yet I suspect these lovely books (and I'm not giving them up, no way!) were rushed out to the public, hence the problem. I hope there's a big technical pattern editing field hiring up good knitter/editors out there. This is one editing job I might enjoy. :)

Anyway: Thanks for the hat correction! I'll be ready for it.

PS I guess I should *finish* my coffee before I comment. Not that I'd babble less, but maybe more coherently! ;)

Posted by: Daphne at February 3, 2006 11:20 AM

Ah...I wondered if you might abandon the LMKG booties after our discussion. I just finished the first one in some sort of Lorna's Laces angora-ish stuff -- and while there are still toe issues, I figured out how to resolve the hole, and working the cuff completely in the round seemed to be an acceptable solution.

I really don't understand how they could let this many errors slip past -- perhaps STC should spend less money on the photography and hire a test-knitter instead.

I made the cotton hat too and ran accross the problem with the eyelet holes. I just brought both ends through the same hole. The bow covers up the fact that there is more space on one side!

thanks for that! Am off to knit it this week-end for a friend's new baby, so will do the small. But it is a good warning. Yours turned out ever so pretty!

those booties are soo cute. I don't understand why there are so many errors in the patterns. why don't they double or triple check these things before print?

Posted by: Monique at February 3, 2006 1:50 PM

What a gorgeous baby set! And what a lucky baby. I have knitted that hat from LMKG a number of times, in every size, and I discovered the error, too. I'm rather disgusted by the technical issues in this book.

BTW, the hat looks equally cute with a coordinating ribbon threaded through the eyelets. I have done that when short on time (or not in the i-cord mood).

P.S. I'm doing sockapaloooza for the first time and I'm really impressed with your sign-up process and stuff. Yay for the tech guys, but yay for you too! You have done a super job. Thanks for doing what you do.

I have to laugh at myself - I checked out that picture of the non-fuzzy LMKG booties, and I said (out loud) "Oh, yuck!" My coworkers are beginning to worry about me...

Gorgeous!
I have the Last Minute Knitting book...and I have only tried the booties...I had no idea what I was doing? (I have been knitting for 40 years)

It should not be that hard.

Now I am afraid I will not use any of the patterns...
Oh yea! I have knit the scarf...with koigu...it curled so badly ....I unwound it.

Bummer

Hi Alison,

I knit a hat and booties myself, and for some reason was thinking of you the whole time (which I found odd, since I don't really know you.) How funny! Now I know we were knitting the same thing!

Posted by: Amy Lu at February 3, 2006 3:15 PM

I made the cotton baby hat last week for my new niece, and it came out fine in the infant size, although I'm not 100% sure about the size after my yarn substitution. It did have an awfully pointy top, so I stuck a pom pom on it (pics on my blog). Then I was working on booties yesterday to match (making up a sock-like pattern as I went along) and I made an uneven number of holes! I didn't notice it till I was threading the tie in, though, so it just has an extra hole (covered by the tie) in the back. I think I'll have to make the same mistake in the second one so they match (or just leave the back hole out).

Stunningly adorable! Thanks for the correction for LMKG. Wonderful book... except for that wee little error problem.

Posted by: Chris at February 3, 2006 4:29 PM

Yes - This is just what I need - So excited...I will be making these over the weekend.

Your use of the angora is wonderful! I also love that angora, which I purchased in the blue/purple color way. I used it along with Cascade 220 to make a pair of Halland mittens from Folk Mittens. They are great, soft and warm!!

Posted by: gail at February 3, 2006 6:57 PM

Glad to know about the error! I have made the small version of this hat, and also wondered at the duckfoot shape of the booties, so also have to thank you for the other baby pattern... great colors!

Posted by: Birdsong at February 3, 2006 7:27 PM

Well, you've knitted some lovely things in the past, so it's hard for me to say that these are better, but they are at least equally as lovely! You're making me want to find some angora right now!

And thanks for the informal review of LMKG - this novice knitter appreciates the warning! :-)

Hi Alison-
Very cute baby set, how many skeins of LH did they take? I found some on ebay, but I want to make sure I get enough!

I LOVE the LH yarn...nice to see the LMKG hat knit in it...so pretty!

Posted by: Beverly at February 3, 2006 9:14 PM

So pretty! So furry! I adore the color combos -

Baby booties are just the best! [Think of the tiny toes all tickled by that pink...]

Thanks for the heads up on the errata! I was just about to knit that hat for my little guy.

They look absolutely gorgeous in that yarn.

It's so funny to me how you keep finding (and bless you for fixing) the errors in LMKG. I just adore the projects in the book but when I knit the children's placket sweater a year ago, I thought I would pull all my hair out! Of course, I was knitting for my friend's twins too so it was double the stress of trying to fix the pattern. Later the errata came out and I was like, "ha! I knew it was wrong!"

Posted by: Juls at February 4, 2006 12:44 AM

That is a really cute set. What a Lucky Baby!

Thanks for the "heads up" on the pattern. I am still so new that I follow the pattern EXACTLY as written. I would not know a mistake if it jumped up and bit me. It really worries me when I read about so many mistakes in patterns . But I guess that is what is so good about the internet and blogging community. So...I read a lot then knit...read...knit....

Posted by: emmy at February 4, 2006 8:44 AM

Wow, the set is so beautiful and cute! Love, love, love it!
