The weather's been gray and rainy and snowy for the first half of our stay here in Germany. It is winter, after all. And it is Germany. So I say, when the weather gives you gray days, make gray squares!
That'll cheer you up! And so will this: In the solid color Manos, I'm getting three full squares out of one skein. (Only two and a half from the variegated skein, for whatever reason.) That means that I should be able to get a decent sized afghan with about 20 skeins of Manos. That's not soooooo so bad. It could have been much worse.
And if you're a 4 1/2 year-old boy, nothing will cheer you up on a gray day like an electric train set!
Bring it on, German weather! We are prepared.

Yeah, I'm going to go and get myself another one or two skeins of those Regia Canadian Colour today...just to be prepared for the grey days.
Afghan looking good :)
Do your inlaws know it's for them, or do they think you're making a pile of potholders?
I'm so jealous you're in Germany. So. Very. Very. Jealous. I loved my visit there last year & would move there in a heartbeat. (Of course that means I'd have to learn German, but that's when having a German boyfriend comes in handy.)
They don't know it's for them. My mother-in-law immediately asked if I was making a blanket. I told her I was just trying out the yarn to see if I liked it and then maybe I might make a blanket. But I'm not telling them who it's for!
The weather has been gray most of the winter here in Germany. I hope the sun decides to come out at least one day during your stay. The afghan is looking very nice, I really love how the colors work together!
Oh my son would go crazy with that train set!!! What fun for your boys.
Yep, you picked a grey time to come and visit. Hopefully it will lighten up a bit. Here in Berlin the sun is actually showing itself-a tiny bit.
is scout there by any chance? when i dropped her off at daycare today, she told me "bye, i'm going to germany"...just checking.
You can say that again about the weather in Germany in the winter! That's why I'm so excited that I might get to visit in the summer this year.
I'd give anything for any sort of winter weather -- It was in the high 70's yesterday where I live! I haven't had much of a chance to wear my winter knits this year :-(
I have noticed that most yarnmakers put less yarn in variegated skeins than they do in solid skeins, even in the same line. That might be why you're not getting as much yardage. I personally think that's a weird way of doing things, but then again, I apparently don't run the world, no matter how much I think I should. ;-)
Hooray for trains!
The squares are coming out great - I love the way they are looking together! Train sets are fantastic for kids - I've been known to get mesmerized myself on occassion ;)
Oh, how timely!
I was searching google for a "mitered square" pattern and when i found your entries about it i was sure it must be archived material.
I'm planning a mitered square throw for my niece using some leftover yarn from a hideously bright poncho she wanted me to make her and throwing in some other equally bright colors just to tickle her fancy. Figured i'd find a pattern now even though this project is probably 2-3 months down the road!
I think i agree that i like the mitered squares better in garter stitch, hmmm...i wouldnt have thought that, thanks for posting pics of your examples!! I especially love the gray suares!!

does an avg. afghan cost $240 not including shipping?...anyway...my son would have loves to play with your boys train set, for now, he just has the Trio one...not quite ready for an electric one. (i took pictures a couple of weeks ago, but haven't posted them yet)
I still can't belive you will sew all those squares together...but the way things are going it will be done way before xmas. cheers.
oh, shame you couldn't hope on a plane and spend the day here. Friday was a gorgeous day, very sunny and warm...a taste of the season soon to come. I went to the local yarn store to look for some yarn for my aunt, and of course, I got a skien for me too.
Yeah, Orli, that's about what I'd expect to pay for a big afghan in a nice wool. It might end up being more (I mean this is my in-laws and I want to be real nice) but it could be a lot less if I went with less expensive yarn.
I just went to Stitches West and found out why (maybe) there is less yarn in your varegated skeins. In the States and I think in Europe too, they're supposed to measure yarn by the ounce (you notice they -usually- give both measurements, yardage and ounces). Get this - some DYES weigh more than others, so that's why there may be more yarn in one skein than another. -- I hope you're going to show us how you sew your mitred squares together. I just finished a baby blanket w/ 4 mitred squares and I hate how it's making up. As always, I love what you do. -- Penny
Penny, that's brilliant. I never would have thought of that. That's a good bit of info to pass along.
Make sure you weigh your skeins though, I always keep a scale nearby when I'm checking in a new shipment of Manos. There is an ocassional skein that is dramatically different.
Those photos reminded me so much of the year I spent in Germany, especially the one of the gray day. Ah, the memories. I adore Germany! It was great to follow along with your adventures here.
