I spent several weeks one summer in Berlin many years ago and there was a street musician who would sing everyday by the Gedächtniskirche with a guitar, a drum on his back that he would bang by stomping his feet, and a harmonica on a holder on his shoulder. He would always sing the Lemon Tree song by Fool's Garden. I don't know why, but I really liked that song.
I used to say the word lemony a lot just because it felt good in my mouth.
And my son B's love of yellow is legendary.
So I guess it's no surprise that I love these yellow squares for the manos afghan.

This may sound like a really weird question and that I'm being snoopy but I have always wondered how you meet your husband? Was it when you where in Berlin?
I LOVE the yellow squares! I've always loved the color yellow -- a real happy color and one to brighten things up! Beautiful!!!!
I've been a Lemon for 34 years! And it's so nice to read something happy about lemons, instead of the usual "if life hands you..." etc.
B. looks very sunny and happy in the playground.
As I am sure you know--yellow and blue are complimentary colors! (draw friendly mother/son conclusions as you wish...)
The BoyWonder loves that song Yellow. Back when we used to watch MTV (way back) he loved the man walking on the beach singing the song. And the airplane flying in U2s Beautiful Day. WHOOSH!
I love the Lemon Tree song. In fact, I still have the cassette single around here somewhere.
That song (Lemon Tree) was HUGE when I was in Germany, and it takes me right back!
Lemon tree, very pretty...
My son J loves yellow too! So, do the in-laws know that you are knitting them an afghan? Or do they just think that you're some crazy square knitter? I love all the colors, do you have a plan that you are working from or are you just winging it? OK, 20 questions over, go play or knit!
Suzanne, I did not know that blue and yellow were somehow complementary. I actually felt a little odd outing myself as a closet yellow fan (although I don't wear any yellow) here on my blue blog. Thanks for making it okay! :)
Leslie, I met my husband in Munich when I studied there for two years. I did a summer backpacking tour through Germany the year before I went over to study and that was when I was in Berlin. This was all waaaay back in the 90's!
Jen, my mother-in-law knew immediately that I must be making an afghan, but I didn't let on that it is for them. I don't have a plan for how to arrange the colors. I've just picked colors that look nice together and that I think will work in their house and am winging it. I'm looking forward to playing around with all the possible patterns when all the squares are done.
Love the yellow! One of my favorite colors, but I just can't wear it. And I think your choice of a mitered square is perfect.
There's something so cheery and warm about yellow, isn't there? Our upstairs bathroom is remarkably close to that shade of golden yellow, and I love it :-)
with every peak of the Manos I am becoming more and more intrugied...the final Afgah should be fab.
That is indeed very lemony! BTW: "Helau!"...or no, you're in Köln, right, so that'd be: "Köller Alaaf!!!"
