stirring the stash

The acquisition of a significant amount of yarn always requires some stash reorganization. And I've noticed that the yarn in my IKEA storage system seems to have become a permanent fixture there, like it's part of the furniture now and not just waiting to be knit. So with new sock yarn to squeeze in and old yarn yearning to break out of the storage, it's time to stir the stash.

This is never a pleasant site. First everything gets tossed on the bed and only slowly redistributed into the storage cubbies and bins. And inevitably hubby will come upstairs during the middle of it all and catch an unobstructed glimpse at the true size of the stash.

But then things start to look better. The soon-to-be-socks bin is neat and inviting.

The remaining sock stash has been purged of a few excesses and mistaken impulse purchases.

And the lornas laces is blooming in the flower pot.

Good job organizing. I still have yarn sitting in the boxes they were delivered in. Just one question, what do you do with your purged or leftover yarn?

Posted by: Pamela at March 3, 2006 10:01 AM

I love how you display the Lornas Laces!

Posted by: Scout at March 3, 2006 10:02 AM

Pamela, I'm bringing a few skeins of extra sock yarn to my knitting group for a little fire sale and then I might offer some sweater-packs of yarn for sale here on the blog.

Posted by: alison at March 3, 2006 10:03 AM

Yum! I always enjoy a peak at someone else's stash. Your colors are brilliant!

Posted by: LaurieM at March 3, 2006 10:08 AM

I love the blooming Lorna's Laces! I need to get some of those cubbies to organize my stash...

Posted by: Rachel at March 3, 2006 10:15 AM

I really need to do that too. I recently found a "new" yarn (it had been stashed for so long I didn't remember having it) that I got so excited about I cast on right away!

What about you? Did you find any hidden treasures????

Posted by: knittingnurse at March 3, 2006 10:16 AM

My stash needs stirring too! I like your enclosed storage - mine is in cubbies, but they're open and it bugs me. Are those from IKEA?

Posted by: Debbie at March 3, 2006 10:29 AM

Stirring of the stash is always dangerous. I don't want Justin to really know how much I have. I know he knows, but doesn't know, uh...you know? The nice thing about seeing all of your stash on a daily basis is that you're sometimes shamed into actually using it. Oh, the shame.

Posted by: kristin at March 3, 2006 10:30 AM

Love the Lorna's Laces flowers :-) I expect my cats would have a field day if I tried that though!

Posted by: kirsty at March 3, 2006 10:31 AM

Stirring the stash - what a great phrase.

Posted by: Carole at March 3, 2006 10:33 AM

Hmmm...now there's a good idea: use stash as decoration... I like it! (I also LOVE IKEA!!!)

Posted by: ruth at March 3, 2006 10:37 AM

Your stash is gorgeous! I want to come over!!! :)

Posted by: Leslie at March 3, 2006 10:46 AM

mmm, those blooming lorna's look lovely!

i always have to sort my stash when nobody else is in the house. they might have me committed if they knew how big it really is...

Posted by: maria at March 3, 2006 10:47 AM

I love the colors from the stash. I am still attempting to plan storage for my growing stash. Now that I am working full-time, it means no time for knitting but money to help the stash grow. Looking forward to the "fire" sale.

Posted by: Darci at March 3, 2006 10:49 AM

Lovely!! And discretely photographed so we never see the complete extent...

Posted by: Chris at March 3, 2006 10:50 AM

Great organizational process. You have so much yarn; mine pales in comparison. I love the phrase: Stirring the Stash.

Posted by: Jessica at March 3, 2006 10:52 AM

The bin! The bin! We have the same bin! I am furious both at Pottery Barn for no longer making them and myself for not buying about 20 when they did make them. Isn't it the most cheerful stripe? And all the more so when filled with sock yarn.

Posted by: Ashley at March 3, 2006 10:55 AM

I am curious! What are all those colorful dpn's in with the blooming sock yarn. ;) Actually... what are your favorite needles and dpn's? Like I said, I'm curious. :)

Posted by: ~Jo~ at March 3, 2006 10:56 AM

That really does look like a bouquet! Too funny.

Posted by: Kathy at March 3, 2006 11:01 AM

I second the colorful dpn question! And I also breathed a measured sigh of relief that my stash is smaller in comparison with yours. Yours is prettier, though. I love the Ikea bookcase, too. Oh why oh why is there no Ikea in NC? Furniture capital, my ass....

Oooh...freaky. I just posted about organizing my stash yesterday, only I called it "Shaking the Pot". For the way that, if you put multiple sizes of beads or marbles in a container and shake it, they sort themselves into layers by size, smallest at the bottom.

Strange feeling of deja vu looking at your post today. :)

Jo, the lovely needles are Comfort Zone needles from Knitting on the Go. They're really flexible and bendy and come in all sorts of bright, fun colors. Check them out!! I like to use either them or the short dpns from Bryspun. No metal or bamboo needles for me. Although I'm thinking of splurging on some rosewood dpns sometime soon. Ooooooh!

Posted by: alison at March 3, 2006 11:08 AM

Alison- have fun with the fire sale, I actually get more excited liberating unloved yarn from my stash than I do aquiring it. How odd is that?

I'm hoping readers of your blog will be able to advise me on my sockapoolza challenge. I bought some lovely Schaefer Anne sock yarn and have cast on and ripped back 5 times - none of the patterns I have suit this yarn. Surely one of your readers must have made some amazing socks out of Anne. If not, then you can update my current status as "lost; looking for roadmap."

Thanks sock sitter.

Wow, that yarn looks great, all neat and tidy. I recently reorganized, too, then I organized a yarn swap with my knitting group. It was a great way to revitalize the stash - for free!

Posted by: Zarah at March 3, 2006 11:27 AM

Lordy, lord...that looks absolutley, YUMMY! I could use a storage unit like that my self...but I think only one cabby would be filled with yarn.

Posted by: Orli at March 3, 2006 11:35 AM

I'm going to sort my stash now, too...I'm starting to get a collection of sock yarn. I think it should sleep together...maybe I'll get baby sock yarn!

Posted by: Beverly at March 3, 2006 11:37 AM

I just did some stash stirring last night. Next up this weekend, pattern stirring.

Posted by: Kat at March 3, 2006 11:49 AM

Oh, I love those DPNs! Thanks for the link; I'm going to check that out.

The true extent of the stash must never be revealed to one's spouse. I don't even open the containers unless I know for certain that he's otherwise occupied. ;-)

Posted by: Beth S. at March 3, 2006 11:52 AM

Oh, I need to do this so badly! I've been saying I'm going to reorganize the stash since before Christmas but I kept getting distracted, and now I can't really do it because the new cat is still living in that room (she's a good cat though - she hasn't shown one bit of interest in my yarn!). But when she finally decides to join the rest of the house, there will be a great stirring of the stash in my house too.

Posted by: Jenipurr at March 3, 2006 11:58 AM

I need to do this as well! I love your flower pot of Lorna's Laces. :D What's the red/white color, out of curiosity??

Posted by: Manda at March 3, 2006 12:18 PM

Recently I've found your blog and love it. I liked your Germany yarn hunts very much. Just as I found your blog recently so have I also discovered a love for sock yarn...the crazier the color the better. Can you with your sock yarn experiences give me a few favorites (brand, color, and tools too)or anyone...Thanks. By the way you have a great looking storage system...as if I had ta tell ya

Posted by: wendy at March 3, 2006 12:35 PM

Alison, thanks for sharing your adventures with the boys in Germany. I, too, have in-laws in Europe, so it was nice to see how well yours interacted with the kids. Get lots of Legos seems to be the answer! I love the stash - very pretty and well organized! I've been knitting from stash for about a month now and am really enjoying the process. Love your blog!

Posted by: Jen at March 3, 2006 1:01 PM

Oh what fun! I may have to go home and stir my stash, and let some bloom!
Very fun pictures!

Posted by: christine at March 3, 2006 2:07 PM

What great, cheery colors in your stash!

Posted by: amanda at March 3, 2006 2:20 PM

Love your Lorna's Laces! I don't think it's ever a good thing for a husband to see the true size of one's stash!

Posted by: Sheri at March 3, 2006 5:50 PM

what kind of needles are behind the lorna's? the colored ones.

Posted by: carolyn h in ct at March 3, 2006 7:25 PM

Carolyn, look for my comment about 15 comments above yours. All is answered there! ;0)

Posted by: alison at March 3, 2006 7:30 PM

Lawdy, my stash's tiny comparing to yours....

Posted by: Elemmaciltur at March 3, 2006 7:36 PM

Gotta love the stash! Hubbies do not understand that yarn is multi-functional. It not only becomes lovely garments, but serves as outstanding room accessories! See, nothing is wasted.

I've been following your blog for awhile now, from Germany and back, and have decided to delurk. Looking at your stash makes me want to race out and go on a splurge too! I'm still working away at the stash my mother passed down to me, though, as she no longer knits. lucky me :)

Those needles look great! How long are they?

Do they really not snap? I fear tiny sock wooden needles...

Off to buy some comfort needles. Thanks for the linkage!

Posted by: freecia at March 3, 2006 9:22 PM

Oh Gosh, it just occurred to me that the comfort zone needles might be more "sat upon friendly" than my metal inox 6" dpns... And perhaps more airport friendly! No matter what the rules say, I always think that metal dpns could be dangerous in my hands... Especially if I lose one and have to do the "where did the #@$!@#$! needle go!" hunt. Or if a seat-neighbor uses my shoulder as a headrest and drool bib.

How did I miss all the other times you've mentioned them? Busy oogling the German Sockyarn, I guess.

Posted by: freecia at March 3, 2006 9:29 PM

Love your storage unit for your yarn. I neeeed that unit. Who makes it?

Posted by: Loren at March 3, 2006 11:04 PM

I am soooo jealous of your Ikea system. Not long after you posted the purchase of it I went looking and it's been discontinued.

Thanks for showing your stash. It's beautiful! Makes me want to do some stirring of my own stash.

Posted by: Trinamac at March 4, 2006 9:44 AM

Beautiful way to store the stash!
