purling

and knitnying, and knittycitying....

What a beautiful day it was in New York City yesterday! And full of beautiful things. First, there were the fabulous clothes at my favorite little boutique in Brooklyn.

Then there were all the yarns and samples and accessories the latest and greatest yarn store on the upper west side, Knitty City.

Knitty City was a very friendly and cute store with a good selection, especially sock yarns! I spotted a few things there I'd never seen before, like Lily Chin's new line of yarn, Frog Tree Merino (love their alpaca too, but their merino feels just like Malabrigo!), and I even met a fellow Sockapalooozer there (hey, Julie!).

Next up was a delightful cream puff at Beard Papa's right down the street. YUM!

And then downtown for the prettiest of them all, Purl (I was very tempted to get some Manos there for my afghan; and all the Lorna's Laces Worsted - swoon!), and some late night knitting at KnitNY (where I even ran into fellow sock sister, Cathy!).

and a Go Knit Pouch from KnitNY

I didn't buy much so far, but there's still today, right?!

Enjoying your NYC yarn crawl vicariously through you! Wish I lived close enough to hop on the train and get there in an hour....

I'm bummed you're in NY! I'm going to Knitsmiths tonight!

Posted by: Anna at March 12, 2006 10:59 AM

I'm on a diet, so I want to hear a bite by slurp description of the cream puff!

Oh lord...the Frog Tree Merino!!! I bought some last year in navy after touching it and not being able to let go...Haven't decided what to make of it yet, but I do have to periodically pet it.

I'm anxiously awaiting the Malabrigo my LYS is supposed to get any day now. There's a red colorway in there with my name on it!

Wahoo! You got some Trekking XXL in the "Neapolitan" colorway! Do knit it up soon--it's positively edible. Pictures of my own are still near the top of my blog, I think.

Oh, what a lovely day. Thanks for bringing us along to enjoy vicariously. :)

Thanks for the tour of your day...I love it! I also wanted to thank you for the help with the short row PGR way. I've finished one heel so far...can't decide if I'll do it for the toe too yet,but I knew I wanted to thank you. Thank you Thank you Thank you......

You were at Otto yesterday? That is literally around the corner from my apartment. It is a very small world indeed.

I got myself one of those Go Knit pouches the other day - perfect for socks!

Posted by: Mary at March 12, 2006 6:14 PM

Whoa. Jealous. Enjoy the yarn crawl!

Posted by: Melanie at March 12, 2006 8:32 PM

Sooooo jealous... my two favorite things.... Manhattan and yarn shopping!

Glad you are having such fun finding all the little yarn goodies.

I love my Go Knit pouch! I won one from Knit.1 and I've carried it with me everywhere since it came in the mail! It's able to carry lots more yarn than I thought it would.

Thx for the pics. I've purchased from Purl, due to oceanic issues it was just online, but id love to do a yarn hike one of these days.

A question: if you could only get to one of those three shops, which one would it be? I know that's like asking which kid is your favorite, but I'm going to "the city" for a meeting and will only have time to shop in one place.

Posted by: Adrienne Martini at March 13, 2006 9:22 AM

PURL! Adrienne, if I could only go to one store, I'd go to Purl. The selection is incredible - only the best. The folks are very friendly (I hope the guy's working there when you go, he's great!). And the store is so pretty. It's a bit pricey, but on par with the other stores in NYC. I think you can get Koigu and some other yarns at slightly better prices at Downtown Yarns, which is another really pleasant store and one of my NYC faves. Of course, if you want to be able to sit and knit, you should consider the Point - lots of yarn and snacks!

Did that help? ;0)

Oh, yeah. That clears it right up.

Heh.

I was leaning toward Purl, tho, and your recommendation cements it. Any place near there that I shouldn't miss? I hear they're opening a quilt shop...

Oh, I have that Trekking in my stash, too! Yay for Neapolitan! :-)

Posted by: Beth S. at March 13, 2006 4:25 PM

Ooh, I'm making socks right now from that color of Trekking, they're so fun! I love watching the pattern emerge.
