question!

(Don't you just love that when Dwight asks a ridiculous question on The Office? By the way, saw the German version, uh, not so good.)

Question!
How am I supposed to get over jetlag when it doesn't get dark until like 11:00pm? Seriously, it was way too light at the in-laws' to readjust my internal clock. So we drove south to Munich for some parental R&R and some darkness.

Question!
Is anyone left in the Netherlands? Apparently every single Dutch family was driving south (surely farther than Munich) when we were. I've never seen so many crappy trailers on one road in my life. The A3 was like a camping site.

Question!
Exactly how many H&M's do you need in one city center? If you stand in front of the Tivoli movie theater in the middle of the Fußgängerzone in Munich, you can see FOUR different H&M's. They are within a minute walk of each other. Wow, and I thought I liked H&M.

Question!
Just how am I supposed to post without any pictures?! The lack of image uploading facilities is killing me. Pics to come next week when the mini-vacation is over and it's back to the kiddos and the computer.

I hear the English version of the Office is pretty funny, although I've yet to see it--a friend of mine spent a semester in England and enjoyed it. (Although Dwight you can't replicate, I'm sure.)

I've been checking out your blog for the last month or so, and am so inspired by your creations! You must knit incredibly fast. I can't wait to see how your afghan turns out--how long would you say it takes you to put this together? I would love to make something like this for both my folks and my in-laws... The thought of beginning is a little intimidating! Any suggestions? :)

Thanks, and happy knitting,

Mindy

What's an H&M?

Posted by: trek at July 18, 2006 4:49 PM

of course there's an H and M everywhere! Your outfit goes out of style by the time you cross the street!

Posted by: dava at July 18, 2006 4:50 PM

LOL!!! I LOVE that show, and Dwight never fails to crack me up!! All those H&M's sound like Starbucks here, or Au Bon Pain in Boston. :)

Posted by: Karen at July 18, 2006 4:50 PM

My boyfriend (born in the Netherlands but not Dutch) nearly fell from his chair because of laughing.

It's a running gag over here, that all of them are on our highways during holiday seasons. Funny, that even you noticed so.

Posted by: Beate at July 18, 2006 5:22 PM

Gee, my town only had one H&M and a C&A... now I feel deprived lol

Posted by: Anne at July 18, 2006 5:32 PM

don't rush that petit-vacance just so we can have pics. puhlease!

Question!
What is an H&M?

Posted by: Laurie at July 18, 2006 6:02 PM

I met a guy once who swore that the Netherlands must rise three inches in summer.

I loved your post. Is an H&M anything like a sieben & elf?

Posted by: Penny at July 18, 2006 6:16 PM

I was watching Office clips on NBC.com today and they had the one where Dwight asks Michael what would happen if he (Michael) were to step on a landmine. Oh man. I love that show.

Posted by: kristin at July 18, 2006 9:46 PM

PLEASE send an H & M over to Athens, GA. Right now! And enjoy your mini-vacay!

Posted by: Carrie at July 18, 2006 10:28 PM

Oh, thats why there were so many Germans in Switzerland when I was there last week. They were fleeing the Dutch. I am assuming that now Italy is filling up with the Swiss.
Also, when one's main navigational technique is to remember the stores one has walked past recently, one should never have more than one H+M in a city center or one will get very lost and end up walking in circles all over Lucerne...

Question! What's an H&M? ;-)

Posted by: Mary at July 18, 2006 10:47 PM

Don't worry about the pictures while on vacation, just enjoy! We can use our IMAGINATIONS (as my daughter shouts) while knitting away and reading about your travels!

Posted by: alliesw at July 18, 2006 11:48 PM

I can't believe all these people don't have an H&M, especially when you have so many.

Question!

Why the hell are you posting when you should be enjoying R&R with hubby?

Posted by: Julia at July 19, 2006 1:52 AM

H&M is like European Gap. Stylish clothes that are really inexpensive. There are a few in America - you can check out the store locations here. There were tons of Americans in the H&M's that I visited yesterday. I guess there are still a lot of Americans who haven't ever been to an H&M.

And I LOVE the British Office so much, I wouldn't even watch the American one at first. I was convinced that it would suck. But it's just as good, if not maybe a little better (since it won't end after just 12 episodes!).

Ha! Holland rising in the summer - too funny!

Posted by: alison at July 19, 2006 4:03 AM

Hehehe, I found that pretty disturbing with the four H&M's downtown, too. Thank goodness I don't really venture down there that often anymore. *LOL*

Posted by: Elemmaciltur at July 19, 2006 5:16 AM

I live in The Netherlands and I could swear Germany must be pretty empty with the number of German numberplates I see over here!

Posted by: Ashley at July 19, 2006 5:46 AM

The Office. Best. Show. Ever.

And Dava? When I read your comment about H&M I almost spat my breakfast on my computer. Too funny.

Posted by: Dani at July 19, 2006 7:17 AM

Ooh, I'm going to Munich in August. I need to know about good knitting stores...and other important sites. Hope you're having a great time!

Posted by: ruth at July 19, 2006 8:04 AM

You really can't have too many H&M's can you?

Posted by: Kate at July 19, 2006 8:45 AM

Oh, please send one of those H & M here to Atlanta!

Posted by: Debbie at July 19, 2006 9:00 AM

wow...just you and hubby...that is luxary.

Posted by: Orli at July 19, 2006 12:21 PM

Only four H&Ms? I think we have six here in Cologne-City. Hehe.
And the Dutch ... they are e-ve-ry-where. They always carry their own homes. Like snails.

Posted by: Alexandra at July 19, 2006 2:21 PM

I guess H&M is the Starbucks of Germany.

Posted by: Beth S. at July 19, 2006 4:42 PM

I thought perhaps the Europeans would be a bit less immune to spacing the same store within eye distance (is that a phrase) of each other; I guess not!

All my Dutch relatives go on holiday about this time, I must admit. But none of them have trailers. HA! You can bet those trailers on the road are immaculate, though. The Dutch love to clean.

I love when Dwight starts off with "Question".
My particular favourite follow-up lines - "Question. My grandparents left me a large number of armoires..."
"Question, did my shoes come off in the plane crash?"

Posted by: Miss Scarlett at July 20, 2006 2:48 AM

@ Beth S. Unfortunately, REAL Starbucks had been cropping up everywhere in Munich over the past year. I don't know how many we have, but to my knowledge there are at least 5 now.

Posted by: Elemmaciltur at July 20, 2006 4:39 AM

Hello
I am working in Geneva (Switzerland) and we have here at least 6 or 7 H&M. I was in Berlin last week and guess what? I paid a visit to H&M and found exactly the same goods. Enjoy your vacation and Germany.

Posted by: Benedicte at July 20, 2006 6:00 AM

I'm in Munich (until September). Karstadt at Karlsplatz has novelty yarns at 1-2Euro a skein. Not that I need any more =/.

Posted by: Alice at July 20, 2006 7:08 AM

Gosh, I love The Office... just that one little mention of Dwight made me laugh hysterically! Definitely check out the British version on DVD! So hilarious!

Posted by: Lolly at July 20, 2006 8:11 AM

The Netherlands has a lot of people crammed in a very small area of land, so my educated guess would be that about 2/3's of them are still in the country ^_~.
As for the different H&M's, are they all selling the same things, or are they divided so some concentrate on youth, some on women, some on children and some on men? That's how they do it in the Netherlands at least, because of the limited amount of space available (not like here in the US where most things can get crammed into one large building).

And you should be glad it gets dark at 11pm ^_~. If you'd been in Denmark about a month ago, it wouldn't have gotten semi-dark until around 2 or 3 am!

Posted by: Karin at July 20, 2006 12:47 PM

What's the German media coverage of Bush's neck rub like?

Posted by: Knitopia at July 21, 2006 3:34 AM

The Office is probably the best show ever -- the only one I'll watch in reruns all year long! The English version was fine, but the American version is 1000 times better. Okay, maybe only 500.

RE: H & M, I'm reminded of the scene in "Best in Show" where the couple describe how they met at two different Starbucks, across the street from each other!

Posted by: Elspeth at July 21, 2006 10:45 AM

I am so not a Dwight but I say "Question" all the time. HeeHee.

WEY HEY its raining here today, Saturday, in this part of europe (UK).... have a great holiday

Posted by: Anne at July 22, 2006 9:16 AM

In the Netherlands there is always a lot of fun because it is for a lot of people a statusymbol to have a crappy trailer. Mine is bigger as the one of the neighbours. And than they can thake with them a lot of food, so that they don´t have too buy it in their vacationcountry. Soo that they can eat their own patatoes :-)))))
But it also gives you a lot of freedom during your holidays.

Greetings Frea, who doesn't yet have a crappy trailer.

Posted by: Frea at July 23, 2006 2:50 AM

I'm with you, Alison. I thought the U.S. office couldn't be better than the UK version. But I love it too. Have a fun vacay.

Posted by: lorinda at July 23, 2006 8:45 AM

So what is the different between the 4 H&Ms? Are they for different demographics? How do you decide which one to shop in???? (I love H&M too)

I don't think it's hard to adjust to the light at night thing, but I guess I am just weird.
