august 22, 2006

are you as excited about this as I am?

Hubby gets this super cool mag called Make that has fascinating little articles like the one about a guy who built a mini-monorail in his backyard, how-to's like how to make a battery out of an ice cube tray and some coins or how to put an entire PC system into an old Atari game console, and reviews of books and gadgets for people who like to make stuff (they even included Knitting for Dummies in the recommended list in one issue!)

Now they're coming out with Craft magazine (for people who like to make stuff with a little less soldering, I guess) and it looks so freaking awesome! The first issue has what looks like Jess Hutch's knitted robots on the cover and the ad blurb speaks of "converting an old pair of shoes into chic knitted boots" - why that can be none other than Tina Marrin's knitted boots that I made! And here's a preview of how to put LED lights into a tank top.

No, I don't plan to make that (you were worried, 'cause I made the boots, I know), but I totally want to see someone do it. First issue comes out "this Fall" (how vague!). Still, I can't wait!

whoa... knit with wire to make chainmail? wow. not many magazines have that! :)

Posted by: bfmomma at August 22, 2006 9:40 AM

nice...do you realize that you wrote "back yarn" instead of "back yard"...freudian slip for sure....

Don't forget, they've launched a very nice blog too:
craftzine.com/blog/
I think I'm already hooked!

Seeing as I have about 1000 little green LED's in my toolbox..that would be me ;)

Posted by: Amber at August 22, 2006 10:29 AM

I have been eagerly anticipating that! When I saw your post, I was all sorts of, "Oh! It must be out now!" But, alas. My wait continues!

Cool Amber, I so want to see you make that blinking tank!

Lisa, I gotta make the typos, so that you will leave a comment! ;0)

an old colleague of mine wove lights into an old green sweater for a fancy dress Christmas party once (he was a Christmas tree...)

he held the battery pack in his pocket and it was ace.

(my costume that year was cool too, I got one of those sew your own advent calander lengths of fabric and made it into a top which I pinned chocolate to)

Neato, Alice! (You know I'm looking for interesting Halloween costumes for the boys - it's going to be hard to top those Thing costumes. Maybe if I come up with something geeky and technical, hubby can make this year's costume!)

Squee! I am excited about the launch of Craft, too. We (both hub and I) subscribe to Make and have enjoyed it for a while now. So we are *so* subscribed already! Hee!

They have talk of chain maille. I'm all there.

I think my project for today (a light tent- should appear on the blog tomorrow if all goes well) is from the Make forums. I wonder if I can find those mags at the library. They sound right up my alley! I can't afford to get any more subscriptions atm though

Posted by: Julie at August 22, 2006 12:04 PM

That rocks. I used to joke about making garter belts with little flashing lights (like a runway). Maybe I'll knit some... ;-)

The box at the top of the blog page says "Just 56 days until CRAFT goes on sale! Avoid the crushing disappointment of an empty newsstand, reserve a copy by subscribing today! Use the MAKE4CRAFT code and receive the cool new CRAFT T-shirt."

So sounds like it will come out mid-October.

Very cool! Thanks for the heads up, Alison. Perhaps since I fell down on boot duty, I can make it up by installing LEDs in a tank top!

Posted by: Julia at August 22, 2006 12:49 PM

I'd only be worried if you made the boots thigh-high...

I just finished a Robot -- Jess's designs are delightful.

I have been waiting for this ever since DH showed it to me. The latest issue of Make netted us two camera mounts for our bicycles.

Posted by: Devorah at August 22, 2006 3:13 PM

Ooooh, might have to take a look at the electric tank top...that would be most perfect for Burning Man!! :)

Posted by: Carry at August 22, 2006 3:27 PM

My husband gets all flustered over Make. You would think it was *different* kind of magazine. I am so excited to learn about Craft. How awesome. Make is extermely well put together, so I hope Craft follows suit.

Posted by: wavybrains at August 22, 2006 6:36 PM

Ooh, just the thing for night cycling. I want, I want!

Posted by: Ina at August 23, 2006 12:40 AM

I wonder if they will carry it at Whole Foods, sometimes I've seen Make there.

Posted by: Rebecca at August 23, 2006 6:53 AM

I am about to start a teaching assistantship and I TOTALLY need an LED tank to keep the kiddies focused!

Posted by: Cirilia at August 23, 2006 8:10 AM

Very cool! Let us know if there's a sighting (or buying hehe).

Posted by: Vicki at August 23, 2006 11:15 AM

I wish they had a cheap combined his & hers Make & Craft subscription... I'd so be there.

Posted by: susan at August 23, 2006 6:32 PM

Yes, Susan, that would be brilliant! I already ordered a subscription for myself, but it would have been cool to get a discount since the Make mag is already coming to our house.
