funky hat mom

Since I can't quite get up early enough in the morning to shower before I have to drop the boys off at school, I've started wearing all my fun knit hats to cover my bed head. I'm trying to avoide the ucky not-showered mom image by being cool funky hat mom. It's working so far, but after two months, the other mothers have seen almost all of my funky hats! I need more!

To keep me in funky hats all winter long, I picked up a couple of kits at Rhinebeck. First, the Lily Chapeau from Morehouse Merino. I loved the look of this hat and found a nice brown/pinky purple combination that I couldn't resist.

Unfortunately it's coming out small. Grrrrr. I thought it was just me until I really did the math and discovered that following the pattern, the brim of the hat is only 17" around and the body like 20". Doesn't the picture make it look like it should be a poofy hat? Well, I want it poofy. I need funky here! So I'll be ripping out the above and starting again with an extra 21 stitches (yes, the pattern is a 21-stitch repeat, aaaaahhhh!).

In the meantime, I can get started on Jamie Harmon's angora mystery hat. This one won't be too small! With two layers of big, fluffy angora, it'll be plenty big and plenty funky.

I picked out white and pink and bought a little extra to make a cute funky baby hat for wee one too. She won't have bed head but bald head to worry about. Like (funky) mother, like (funky) daughter.

That pink handspun is just gorgeous, you and the little one are going to look perfect in matching mother and daughter hats. So cute!

The angora mytery hat looks like every other dubbelmossa (Swedish hat)just like Meg Swansen has the video for and is in her book and was published quite a while ago. But hers is stranded work. Her mother's version is fair isle/stranded. The pattern you show looks much quicker.

aww, that baby yarn combo looks so soft and snuggly. Perfect for (funky hat) baby.

Just got back from dropping DS off at school. Not only haven't I showered, I'm still in my PJs. You're doing just fine!

I wonder if you have enough yarn to do a modified beret here. You know, for just a little poofy-ness without the floppyness of a beret.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only mom who walks my DD to the school bus in a hastily assembled bunch of layers and bed head. Must knit more hats..... (especially since the moms in my town wait for the school bus in gleaming HumVees. Maybe they stay in their SUV's to hide their own bed head...)

You might want to listen to the Lime and Violet Pod Cast where they lament over a Morehouse scarf that came out big enough for a Barbie Doll and not at all like it was pictured.

I wanna make me one of them reversible hats. And yes, I do think that first hat looks poofy in the picture, and I like poof, too. Will you be knitting the little flower?

Yup! Definitely looks poofy. And I think it looks better poofy. Otherwise it's just another watchcap.

Hi Alison,
I LOVE the funky hat mom idea - and yes I agree that hat should be poofy - it looks very cute! :)

Ooooh! That pink yarn looks good enough to eat!! It's so beautiful. I can't wait for you to post the picture when you are done knitting!

You should check out Itty Bitty Hats! Really great hats in there but of course you will have to upsize them for an adult.
