thank heavens for big boys and little girls and lots of extra screws

The boys have new big boy bunk beds! They're so excited. They told their friends at school, my friends at a holiday party, the crossing guard, pretty much everyone we meet.

They even helped Daddy put it together.

That is, once we got all the pieces. I had to drive back to IKEA to get all these missing screws and bits.

Go ahead, count 'em, that's over 220 missing parts! It took the nice lady at customer service more than 15 minutes to gather them all up for me. Before I left home, hubby had instructed me, "no matter what they give you, count them before you leave," so I went to the restaurant for some meatballs (I'm pregnant, so naturally I got hungry waiting for those parts!) and counted all those little pieces. And wouldn't you know it, I was still 32 pieces short. Back to customer service, more waiting, and then, of course, more food.

Wee one can now claim one of the boys' old beds (now where did we store those side slats to covert it back to a crib??). The latest ultrasound shows her sleeping away, dreaming of IKEA furniture.

Yay for bunk beds! I have never been a fan of IKEA furniture, for stories like yours and The Harlot's. Around here, it's heresy for me to even think that, much less say it out loud!

oh my gosh, she's a doll!
Gil also has a bunk bed but it will be a while before he shares it with anyone. We are just leaving his crib up...we don't see a point of taking it apart only to put in together again in hopefully [fingers crossed] 9 mos time.

vow, you are one patient Ikea visitor! How good of you to count the pieces there. (I would have never had that patience! I hate shopping)

Posted by: Lara at December 4, 2006 9:46 AM

So who gets top bunk?!? I envy your patience, that's for sure. I actually LOVE Ikea but don't often possess the patience to shop there with my 3 young'uns. Congrats to the boys!

Unfortunately (or fortunately!) my closest IKEA is 50 miles away but I have to fight Pittsburgh traffic to get to it! For the crib sides -- have you checked up in any exposed rafters or behind a wall of cardboard boxes? (Don't ask how I came up with those places!)

hmmm I think I would like a furniture store with a restaurant in it.. no Ikea near here.. but there is this other furniture store here with a cafe in it and the parking lot is always chock full of cars at all hours!

Their excitement is completely understandable. I would have done the same if I had the immense priviledge of having a bunk bed when I was their age. The best kind of bed to have! (Until you get to college, and then it just means that your room is so small that you have no other option.)

wow your boys are starting to look so grown up!

I had a similar experience with Her Ladyship's new IKEA dresser last year. You can imagine my frustration when one of the Customer Service phone folk told me that it was my responsibility to count everything before I left the store. Can you imagine? The way those things are packaged? With kids in tow? My suggestion -- that they pack their products correctly the first time -- received a decidedly lukewarm response.

What a miracle modern technology is! 25 or 30 years ago you wouldn't have been able to see your little pea in her pod!!!

Posted by: Kathy at December 4, 2006 1:25 PM

Bet your boys loved helping build the beds, its just like big boys Lego really! Glad you got all the bits second time around.

SO CUTE! Little Man discovered bunk beds during a jaunt to the Mill Store this weekend, and has been begging for them ever since. Enjoy!

Posted by: FemiKnit Mafia at December 4, 2006 2:04 PM

Oh my - how do you decide who gets the top bunk when you have twins? Did one say "no way - I'm not sleeping up there!" ??? heh You could only hope. When my two oldest were little they had bunk beds but the choice was obvious about who slept on top because one was older!

Ahh Ikea - always a favorite & it now has a special place in our family lore. My first granddaughter was scheduled to be delivered by C section on 11/17. The previous Sunday, Mommy, Daddy & big brothers went to Ikea to buy a new dresser for all the pink baby clothes. Past practice (at least when I have gone to Ikea with Mommy & 2 boys) has been to have lunch (meatballs of course) followed by shopping followed by dessert if boys have behaved respectably. Well, this time, as they were looking at dressers (after meatballs of course), Mommy's water broke. They called us & we met them all at the hospital. Daddy brought boys to us in waiting room & we waited while surgery was performed. As we were waiting (about 1½ hours) older boy said plaintively, "I didn't get dessert!" I wonder if he will remember his sister's birth as the one time he didn't get dessert at Ikea.

My boys had bunk beds too! They're so great. Now that we're in a bigger house, the bunk beds converted into a separate bed for each boy. They needed their own rooms, they're 10 and 12 now.

I cannot believe that Ikea would do that to you with the screws. Did they compensate you in anyway? Seems to me they should have at least paid for your lunch!

I guess this is part of the reason I never shop at Ikea.

I just love ultrasound pictures. I can't wait until I can have a little girl someday. I'm so jealous and happy for you. :)

Great u/s photo! So how did you deal with the top bunk issue? That was a major issue in childhood, as I recall. :-)

Posted by: Elinor at December 4, 2006 3:55 PM

That's awful. I hate inconveniences like that.I never would have thought of counting the items before I left! Good call.
I have had only good experiences with IKEA which is fortunate since ours is about an hour away.
My sister and I had bunkbeds when we were little and we were just as excited as your boys. They are such fun.
Love the ultrasound pic - thanks for sharing.

Those boys are getting so tall! And I love the art gallery on the walls!

Posted by: Dava at December 4, 2006 5:22 PM

What great bunk beds. And what a darling girl. Is it my imagination or is she tinted pink in the ultrasound?

Posted by: Jessi at December 4, 2006 6:04 PM

plz show the felted bowl soon i want to see how it turned out!

What a cutie pie sound asleep. Must be the sound of knitting needles putting her to sleep. I love the boy's bunk beds. My son always wanted some, but since he did not have a little brother we couldnt see the sense in it. He is 12 now so maybe I need to visit Ikea for a double bed for him.

Posted by: Sue at December 4, 2006 7:32 PM

Actually, the bunk beds and the IKEA trip were really no problem at all. The boys easily decided who was going to be up and who down. S really wanted the top and B realized that if he were below, he could always be the first one out of bed and being first is what he cares about most anyway!

And honestly, I've bought so many things from IKEA over the years and this is the first time I have ever had a problem with missing parts. Everyone was so helpful too. They said they could send me the parts or I could drive down to get them. I mean, how cool is it that they have a whole area with all the individual parts right in the store?! And it was no biggie that the customer service woman missed a few. You know, there's a reason that machines pack those bags of bits - because it's practically impossible for a human to count out scores of different tiny pieces without making a mistake. I can even count my cast on row and get the same number twice!! ;0)

All those meatballs made her tired. LoL

Posted by: Tracey at December 4, 2006 8:12 PM

I am so happy I stumbled across your blog again! Right now I'm 18w5d pregnant, its great finding other preggie knit bloggers.

I remember one time DH and I bought a rolling, tilting, spinning computer chair from Ikea. We got home, put it together, and there were no wheels. Oh, of course the wheels are sold seperatly, how silly of us.

Posted by: Meg at December 4, 2006 8:54 PM

I have had the same experience as Alison, one incorrectly packed piece of furniture out of who knows how many. And again, the lady was friendly who got the part for me.

And yay for the boys' new beds!

Posted by: Rebecca at December 5, 2006 6:34 AM

Great beds! Is that the Hemnes bed? We're planning to get that set for our son, though we're not sure if we're going to get the loft style one or the bunk bed one. Since there is only one of him we only need one bed and his room is small so a loft style would be nice ... I'm blabbering now. LOL

I love the u/s picture. She's cute. :)

Posted by: Samantha at December 5, 2006 10:52 AM

Yay new bunk beds! And aww, she's so cute.

I bought that same bed in WHITE for Darling Daughter. Single bed, no bunk bed. Took me and one of the building guys to put it together. It was missing some screws and since IKEA is too far away to go back and haggle over it, I had to make due.
