why didn't I knit myself a maternity sweater?

I know the answer - I haven't had any time to knit a maternity sweater! - but after ripping a seam on one of my favorite store-bought normal-sized (and cashmere!) sweaters, I'm asking myself again.

Luckily, it's just the seam that came apart when I tried to squeeze my 8 month pregnant body into it (I was able to wear the sweater two weeks ago, darn it!). I think I may be able to weave it back together. Until then, no more regular sweaters for me. To paraphrase Plankton from SpongeBob Squarepants: "It's becoming increasingly obvious. I can deny it no longer! I am big."

I only had one maternity sweater, my mother knit it for me. It was knit in a pattern that was suposed to make it draw up like an accordian, and did NOT work. I found out later that it was a combination of Mom knitting it in acrylic and me throwing it in the washer and dryer. It ended up as a sweater for my 350 lb brother. NO JOKE

Uh oh ...

i couldn't bring myself to knit a maternity sweater. they are just so much bigger and i have enough trouble making regular sized sweaters. it's all gap and old navy for me!

Ooh, sorry about the seam. That's a nice sweater.

I was at the huge stage of pregnancy in the summer both times, so I didn't ever have to worry about maternity sweaters. Thank goodness, because the yarn for something to cover my giant baby ball would have cost a fortune!

The woman who has fixed the blankets so very skillfully should have no problem with that little torn seam. It is frustrating though. I remember how quickly I grew, and I could never really accept it.

My biggest time was throughout the summer, so I never worried about maternity sweaters, but I nearly LIVED in my maternity swimsuit. (Still do, truth be told, even though I don't need the extra fabric in the belly - the little skirt hides a multitude of fabric and stretchmark sins!)

Hey what about modifying it with slits on the sides a la "Mommy Snug"

Hope the final month goes well for you. I'm looking forward to seeing the photo of all the hats, sweaters and booties.
You've been pretty quiet about your "Charmed Knits" book. I was suprised to see it in Knitpicks upcoming releases. Well timed!

I had only one maternity sweater (cashmere!) and it was a hand me down from a friend who had recently had twins.

Yes, Sponge Bob does have a way with words.

I love Plankton and his one big eye.

Cashmere tragedy! Thank goodness for seams. Do you think not knitting yourself a maternity sweater and squeezing yourself into the sweater has anything to do with how your are probably around a third of the size compared to your last pregnancy? Those twins, they lulled you into a size complacent second pregnancy.

Ugh...I knit a maternity sweater for myself early on. It was from the new Louisa Harding book, the one with organic yarns. It looked like crap. Luckily, I have a very petite friend who is also pregnant, and it looked cute on her. Only hoodies and cardis for me from now on -- and a cute shrug I'm designing for myself which I hope I can also wear post-pregnancy (assuming my stomach can be whipped back into shape.)

At 8 months I didn't own anything other than a maternity sweatsuit that fit!

Sorry about your pretty sweater. However, the kind of "big" you are experiencing now is such a pretty "big" with the promise of beautiful results. I fondly remember those wonderful days when I felt like a whale. It was distressing then, but a happy memory now!

As interminable as it feels.... it'll be over soon. And you'll be ready for spring shortly after! :)

Oops! I never had many maternity clothes with my first, not any sweaters at all. And my second and third were born in aug. and sept. so it was tooooo hot for a sweater. It was mostly stretchy jean shorts and big t-shirts for me!(and an ice cold drink.)

Well, I'm knitting a maternity sweater formyself and making it up as I go along. We're working on getting pregnant, so I still have time to rip out and try again. My goal is to have it be a bell but fitted at the top, I'm adding an area on the sides that can easily be steaked or even just tied to turn it into a sweater for post-pregnancy stomach. I'm using Swish Superwash from Knitpicks and some cabled happiness symbols down the center for luck from Elsbeth Lavold's "Viking Patterns for Knitting". Hopefully it all works out. So far it's beautiful and just what I've been dreaming of. Once I am pregnant then I'll have hat and bootie fever.

I found a great maternity sweater in the first IK magazine that I picked up, but I can't reasonably imagine knitting it for myself while I was actually pregnant.

And just think, it's not really YOU that's getting so big... ;)

I did the same thing with my favorite pair of jeans from Gap. They split right along the pocket seam and the only thing that kept the split from going all the way down was the 2% lycra! Never thought I'd be so glad for lycra. I kept them though and plan to put a patch on the inside and wear them till I know what my final size is going to be. I, too, failed to knit a maternity sweater as the one I saw wasn't till I was already way too big to fit it.

OOh, 8 months ... time passes really quickly. Soon you're having a lovely little baby in your arms!
