not another blanket!

Okay, maybe not a-whole-nother blanket. But there are still more stitch patterns and color blocks in that Sarah Dallas Knitting book that I want to try out.

For example, I adore this little diamond pattern. In the book it's on a beautiful (and white!) laundry bag. But I'm not sure about a knitted laundry bag. What do you all think? Wee one does need a hamper. And I do have a lot of stash yarn (this is some Tahki cotton classic from my stash). Should I do it?

That put me in the mind of the Wimbeldon sweater you did. (No idea why, i know they're totally different patterns) You should make her a little mini version, in honor of her great Grandpa!

Here I am, a day late. Our own Baby L (now 25) was an all-day screamer, too, and it's so loud and totally unnerving. Removing lactose from MY diet helped a little, and constant motion helped a little. In retrospect, I wish I'd gotten one of those wind-up swings and let her tick-tock away in it all day long!

How about a pillow cover to go with all those blankets?

Posted by: nicole at March 22, 2007 9:00 AM

Why not? It doesn't have to stay a laundry bag. It could be a fun blanky tote! It could be a lovey container. I think it could be lovely!

Posted by: Frarochvia at March 22, 2007 9:12 AM

Oh, for sure if only to find a way to use that pattern, that is gorgeous.

Posted by: Orli at March 22, 2007 9:14 AM

Or what about as the back up blanket for when the wee one loves the first one two much.

Or

She could have two and a rotation could begin so laudry doesn't have to be don isntantaneously.

Wow. I really need to get that book to make some blankies. Everything you knit out of it is fantastic!

Posted by: Brandy at March 22, 2007 9:23 AM

I say go for it! :) That is a really nice stitch pattern. The purple yarn makes it pop nicely.

Posted by: Samantha at March 22, 2007 9:25 AM

That's it! I am going to buy that book now! The stitch patterns are great and my boy wants his own blankie.

Posted by: Michelle at March 22, 2007 9:28 AM

I like the stitch pattern. It looks very nice in that yarn. I think it would make a cute laundry bag for wee one.

Posted by: Sarah at March 22, 2007 9:30 AM

I say, make it into a pillow! That would be so cute to have in her room, and you could always add some more later on :)

Posted by: Dani at March 22, 2007 9:31 AM

I used that pattern in a blanket...and for several cotton wash clothes for my grandaughter. I love it

Posted by: sandi at March 22, 2007 9:31 AM

so cute...I say whatever you make it will rock.

Posted by: Darci at March 22, 2007 10:13 AM

I would make a laundry bag! But I would line it with something :)

Posted by: Meg at March 22, 2007 10:25 AM

It's a really cute and practical idea for her room! I say you go for it!

Posted by: Lisa at March 22, 2007 10:27 AM

I wouldn't have thought of a knit laundry bag but... ohhhkay. Surely there's a purpose for such sweet yarn and darling pattern that would hold a more loveable status than a laundry bag? heh I second the motion for blanket. Gosh knows you gotta have a backup when blankie #1 is in the laundry! :)

Posted by: Laura at March 22, 2007 10:34 AM

I vote for a pillow over a laundry bag -- perhaps it is my distaste for laundry in general, as I'm more of a vacuuming kind of gal.

Posted by: nona at March 22, 2007 10:59 AM

My vote would be no for a knitted laundry bag! It is my experience that baby laundry can get pretty grubby, you might be washing the laundry bag as much as the laundry.
The pattern is very pretty though!!

Posted by: Kristin at March 22, 2007 11:14 AM

yeah, i think Nona's idea for a pillow is a good one. because as Kristin pointed out, baby laundry gets pretty gnarly right? :o)
i dunno if i'd be able to handle it--you probably would be okay with it since you are a mom of (now) 3 kiddies! but i think a pillow for baby's crib or for the rocking chair (nursing chair?) would be nice? :o)

I made a sweater in a similar stitch pattern from Cosmicpluto. Really cute, and the diamond pattern was very fun.

Lauren, I know that pattern; Dani from Knitmsiths made it recently. And Johanna also did a diamond pattern sweater (from a Jaeger pattern) that sort of inspired my choice of purple. And Shireen made a baby sweater with the diamond pattern from Interweave Knits a while back. I loved all of these and am really itching to find something to do with these diamonds now!

Posted by: ALISON at March 22, 2007 12:46 PM

How about a baby sweater, since there's already a pattern written and tested by someone you know?! Or a little cotton tank dress with a diamond pattern, for summer months?

Posted by: Mary at March 22, 2007 1:25 PM

No, I wouldn't make a laundry bag unless, as mentioned above, you line it with something. Personally I wouldn't be as worried about frequent-washing as I would be about stretching. I think once you get a few things in there, it'll be shapeless and not very nice-looking. But if you were to line it with a nice firmly-woven cotton, bob's-your-uncle.

Posted by: Shannon B at March 22, 2007 1:38 PM

You should! A knitted laundry bag would last much longer than those crappy cheap mesh bags you can get at the department stores.

Posted by: Kristin at March 22, 2007 1:41 PM

Mmmm... I keep looking at that "sign ups will happen after baby comes" and thinking... soon... I hope... :)

Posted by: Timothy at March 22, 2007 1:50 PM

That's a gorgeous pattern! I'm with the pillow confederation. A laundry bag is too lowly of a position for a pattern like that!

Posted by: C at March 22, 2007 1:51 PM

I love that pattern! I am using it for a blanket my mom and I are knitting together... It really makes plain colors pop. (I'm using Simply Soft for mine, actually, in daffodil color... lovin' it). Not sure about a laundry bag, unless you line it like someone mentioned... Could be very cute hanging up behind her door or on a little hook or something :)

My husband has a blanket knitted out of that pattern that his mom knitted him in 1973!

Posted by: cathy at March 22, 2007 2:00 PM

My baby is over 30 and far away, but my memory hasn't failed entirely: I'd envision a nice plastic laundry hamper (with good air circulation possibilities) and a "skirt" for it done in that pattern--like the ones our mothers/grandmothers tacked up over washstands, before they were enclosed with cupboards. But not gathered dotted swiss or gingham, lovely knit fabric making a utilitarian item pleasing to look at.

Posted by: Judith at March 22, 2007 2:00 PM

I can imagine what a lovely laundry bag that would be, but being a mama of a wee one myself, I would recommend finding another use for the stitch pattern. There are often random (maybe not so random!)wet stains on my baby girl's clothes and I would be afraid that the bag would either get wet, stained, or yucky from kid clothes!

I like the idea of a knitted laundry bag - made out of something like Kitchen Cotton (I guess it might be Craft Cotton now), Sugar & Cream or Cotton Tots - something you can just throw in the washer & dryer with the clothes. Keeps the bag nice & fresh smelling (or as fresh smelling as possible). As far as the screaming all day baby - I'm not sure anything other than time makes a whole lot of difference. My daughter cut dairy out of her diet & it made little difference & baby won't stay in the swing more than about 3 minutes at a time - they don't always work. Baby M is getting a bit better now that she is 4 months old but still she mostly wants to be held upright & carried around. DD thinks (& I agree) that baby M probably has GERD (as does her mother). It would account for why she wants to always be upright (to keep the stomach acid from burning her esophagus) & why she will cry out (in obvious pain) shortly after she nurses unless she is held upright. I got a Bumbo for her & she does like it somewhat (more than the swing anyway) but still rarely stays in it for more than a few minutes. But we noticed a change about the time she turned 4 months old - she now tries to play with her toys. She is trying to grab things with her hands - does anyone know where to find old fashioned rattles? They would be perfect for her. The closest I was able to find is a plastic crab face - the eyes are clear round plastic with beads in them (ie rattles) & the mouth is cut out so it's relatively easy to grab & it has crinkly tabs at the bottom that she can chew on. It's still a bit heavy for her - a traditional barbell shaped rattle would be perfect. So I guess the only advice/comfort I can give is to hang in there - things will get better. Also - you will not believe how crazy she will be about her big brothers & how happy that will make you.

Donna, my kids both loved a red phone shaped plastic rattle mom mother in law found at the local drug store. It is very light and looks much like the old barbell rattles. My son also cried until we switched him to soy formula. Oh to go back in time and make THAT switch sooner!

I do LOVE that stitch for a bag. Just beautiful.

Alison,

Debbie Bliss used that exact same pattern (also in white (!!!)) on a sweet litle sweater. I made it in navy blue, but it actually shows better in the lighter colors. Whatever, they're all fun to knit!
:0)

Aha - I recognise that pattern - I knitted my husband a whole jumper in that pattern, with a little fairisle around the neck and sleeves. It was in purple as well, but a more lilac shade. He chose it and it suits him despite lots of comments from people while I was knitting about it not being a man's colour - whatever that is :) He's obviously just very confident *g*. That was a while ago now - must be at least 10years.

It is a nice pattern :)

DO IT! Knitted laundry bags (in a washable yarn)....Brilliant!

Debbie Bliss uses that stitch pattern for the most adorable baby sweater. It's in her Baby Knits for beginners. You might want to check it out. :)

Hi,

Came across your blog while searching for a beginner's scarf to knit, and your keyhole scarf seems to be a perfect project. Especially because you put in the stitch count for bulky yarn as well. Thank you! Have a wonderful weekend!
